File consists of one diary of Archibald McKinlay, the first of two. The diary spans November 3, 1876 to February 9, 1877 and documents McKinlay's travels to reserves as reserve commissioner and includes copies of correspondence, basic census information for Indigenous communities, and translations of Indigenous languages.

Tolmie, John McLeod, Donald Ross, and Ogden's son-in-law Archibald McKinlay, as well as several unidentified correspondents. The file also includes an extract from Ogden's letters to Chief Traders Tod and Mansion in 1845. Although described as a holograph, it appears to be in a different hand than Ogden's. Correspondence deals with a variety of private and Company matters.

Transcripts have been placed in a separate folder for conservation purposes. Not all letters have accompanying transcripts. Some transcripts appear to be copied from John McLeod's "Journals and correspondence of John McLeod, Senior, Chief trader, Hudson's Bay Company."

The file consists of Peter Skene Ogden's outward correspondence dating from 1851 to 1852. The file includes both original letters and transcripts that were created in 1952. Not every letter has a corresponding transcription.The letters are addressed to a number of correspondents, including Ogden's son-in-law Archibald McKinlay, William F. Tolmie, and Ogden's daughter, as well as several unnamed individuals. The letters discuss both personal and Hudson's Bay Company business.

A loose sheet in the back of the diary contains copies of letters written by James McKinlay and a list of plants.

File consists of a portion of a handwritten manuscript by Archibald McKinlay describing an encounter with an Indigenous group at Fort Walla Walla. A typescript of "Narrative of a Chief Factor of the Hudson's Bay Company" is included in the file, copied from MS No. C25 from the Bancroft Library.

The diary is written by a different James McKinlay than the eldest son of Archibald McKinlay, and documents a journey from Fort Resolution through the Northwest Territories with Warburton Pike. This James McKinlay was a clerk with the Hudson's Bay Company at Fort St. John, Fort Resolution, and Fort Smith.

The file consists of correspondence from Thomas Lowe to Archibald McKinlay, primarily concerning the Ogden estate.

This series consists of Volume I of the Journal of Proceedings of the Joint Indian Reserve Commission (JIRC) and documents the daily work of the three commissioners (Alexander Caulfield Anderson, Archibald McKinlay, and Gilbert Malcom Sproat) from November 1876 to June 1877 on the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island. In addition to the text of the journal, there are also several ink and colour drawings of reserves.

Within the journal are several loose correspondence and drafts of documents, many of which are addressed to A.C. Anderson. These loose documents have been retained within the pages of the volume.

The JIRC was formed in 1876 to settle disputes between the federal and provincial governments regarding allotment of reserves in British Columbia. The JIRC operated until 1878, when it was replaced by the Indian Reserve Commission, for which Sproat remained the commissioner.
