The fonds consists of correspondence and telegram messages created by the Telegraph Creek telegraph office agents from 1949 to 1962. From 1949 to 1954 the Telegraph Creek office was run by the Government Telegraph and Telephone Service. From 1954 to 1961, the office was managed from the Vancouver office of the North-west Telephone Company. When North-west joined the British Columbia Telephone Company in 1961, the running of the exchange was managed by the British Columbia Telephone Company. The first file contains correspondence (1949-1956) between the Telegraph Creek agent and the supervisor either of the Government Telegraph and Telephone Service or the North-west Telephone Company regarding office facilities, supplies, payment, work duties etc. The rest of the files are arranged by month and year (1958-1962) and consist of telegram messages sent out and messages received in at the Telegraph Creek office.

CALL NUMBER: T1209:0007 SUPPLIED TITLE OF TAPE(S): Jack Davis comments on his resignation as Minister RECORDED: [location unknown], 1978-04-[03?] SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Jack Davis, Social Credit MLA (North Vancouver - Seymour), explains the reasons why he resigned as Minister of Energy, Transport and Communications, pending the outcome of an RCMP investigation into his air travel expenses. Davis admits that he traded-in first class airplane tickets for regular fare tickets and pocketed the difference. But, Davis says, he did not claim some other expenses he could have claimed, and the refunds he received were kept in lieu of claiming for those other items. Davis also says that he reimbursed the government for some of the difference. The press questions Davis extensively regarding the specifics of what he did, as well as about details surrounding his resignation. April 3 [?], 1978. [TRACK 2: blank.]

Ker family business and personal records

Series includes correspondence, diaries, personal and business records, including papers of his grandfather, Robert Ker, and father, David Russell Ker, who was president of Brackman and Ker Milling Company, and who retained some of the records of this company.

Robert Henry Brackman Ker was born in Victoria in 1895, the son of David Russell and Laura Agnes (Heisterman) Ker. He was educated in Victoria and in England and in 1914 became a lieutenant in the 50th Gordon Highlanders. In 1915 he went overseas with the 48th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Forces (C.E.F.) and was seconded to the Royal Flying Corps (R.F.C.), serving in France with 24 Squadron, R.F.C. and then late in 1917 served at Camp Borden as a squadron commander. At the end of the World War I he entered local business in Victoria, involving himself in insurance and real estate. He was also active as a director and later president of Brackman and Ker Milling Company, and served in similar capacities with various flour milling, brewery, and oil companies, including Purity Flour Mills Limited, Home Oil Company Limited, and Molson Breweries, Limited. He also served on the board of directors of the B.C. Power Corporation and B.C. Electric Company, Montreal Trust Company, and University of British Columbia. From 1923 to 1924 Ker served on Victoria City Council as alderman and involved himself in other civic activities, as president of the Victoria Chamber of Commerce and as chairman of the Victoria Community Chest campaigns in 1937 and 1938. In later years he took an active interest in the affairs of the Greater Victoria Art Gallery and St. Michael's University School.

The records consist chiefly of correspondence arranged by Mr. Ker alphabetically by subject, boxes 2-24. This arrangement has been maintained except for the contents in box 1 which were extraneous to the filing system used by Mr. Ker. This material has been sorted and arranged chronologically.

In addition, Mr. Ker preserved some of the papers of his grandfather, Robert Ker, who served as Auditor General in the colonial Government of Vancouver Island and British Columbia, and his father David Russell Ker, who was president of Brackman and Ker Milling Company Limited, and who retained some of the records of this company. These records are contained in boxes 25, and 30-33.

This accession contains approximately 1,000 prints, postcards and negatives of soldiers, family groups and holidays. The negative albums are indexed.

News item. Unveiling of plaque at B.C. Telephone Company office to honour the "father" of telephone communication in Victoria, Robert Burns McMicking (1843-1915). He brought the first telephone to Victoria in 1878. Victoria had Canada's third public telephone service in 1880.

Robert McMicking personal and business records

Robert Burns McMicking was a manager for the Victoria and Esquimalt Telephone Company (later part of the British Columbia Telephone Company) and an electrician for the City of Victoria. He was married to Margaret (Leighton) McMicking.

Records include six volumes of letterbook correspondence outward, 1871-1895 and 1905-1910, relating to the telephone, telegraph and lighting system and the electrical business in Victoria. Also included are diaries from 1862-1863 and 1877 relating to life in Yale; notes for lectures on topics relating to electricity and physics; marriage certificate, 1899; documents relating to Commission as Justice of the Peace, 1899; papers relating to McMicking family history and a scrapbook of clippings relating to electrical and telephone business.
