Princess in wonderland

The item consists of four reels of unedited film elements that make up a documentary from 1958. It shows Princess Margaret's 1958 royal visit to mark BC's Centennial. Includes: numerous official welcomes and ceremonies; Royal Review of ships of the RCN, USN and Royal Navy; visit to natural gas development at Fort St. John; rodeo at Williams Lake; opening of Okanagan Lake Bridge & Fort Langley restoration; UBC convocation (and bestowal of honorary degree on Princess Margaret); aerial and travelling shots from planes and trains. Premier W.A.C. Bennett and Lieutenant-Governor Frank Ross appear throughout.

Includes details of vessels in Esquimalt, submarines constructed in B.C., naval hospital, signalling school, Prince Rupert drydock, and Royal Naval College. Transcripts of Admiralty telegrams and casualty reports also included, along with photographs and plans of defences at Seymour Narrows. Notes apparently prepared by Naval Service staff, ca. 1919.

Hubert Hall and Edward Livesay interview

The item is an audio recording with Bert Hall, surveyor and corporal in the Rocky Mountain Rangers during the 1900s, tells tall tales, and recalls an incident when he was mistakenly shot at, taken for another person involved in a vendetta. The last ten minutes of track 1 is Ted Livesay telling of his navy experiences. He joined the naval reserve corps in Esquimalt in 1913. In track 2 Ted Hall describes his experiences aboard the HMCS "Rainbow": its role in the "Komagata Maru" incident, and a near miss with German cruisers in the Pacific during WWI. Subsequently he served on the East Coast on the HMCS "Niobe"; then with the British navy in the North Atlantic. Later recollection of a ship's surgeon by the name of Captain Nimmo [?].

The series consists of a photograph album created by the Advisory Council, Provincial Civilian Protection Committee around 1945. The album contains 150 black and white prints showing the Provincial Civilian Protection Committee and A.R.P. (Air Raid Precautions) activities in the province between 1942 and 1945. Most of the photographs were taken by Steffens-Colmer Ltd. of Vancouver including a few by Don Coltman and the Royal Canadian Navy. Each photograph has been glued onto a numbered page and has a typed caption. There is one loose print at the end with no caption.

The photographs depict the following activities: headquarters and staff of the committee; A.R.P. firefighting practical training; first aid and hospital incident practice; A.R.P. students and teams; power boat squadrons, ambulances, mobile canteens and other equipment and public information activities including parades and instruction in the use of respirators for civilians.
