Men, mountains and the challenge

The item is a reel of industrial film showing highway construction in BC. Includes planning and surveys; opening of contractors' bids by Highways Minister Gaglardi; clearing of route by heavy equipment; culvert assembly; drilling and blasting rock; road bed preparation; paving. Traffic control and overpass construction are also discussed. Sections of Highways 1 and 1A are shown, and Premier W.A.C. Bennett presides at an official opening.

Nine Mile Canyon bridge opening

The item consists of a workprint reel of film footage. Highways minister Phil Gaglardi cuts ribbon made up of various miniature flags at the opening of the Nine Mile Canyon bridge.

Overlanders Bridge opening

The item consists of a reel of original unedited film footage and a print. Shows opening of the Overlanders Bridge near Kamloops. A Western-style stage coach carries VIPs to the ceremony site. Premier W.A.C. Bennett and Highways Minister Phil Gaglardi are showing at the ceremony. A procession returns from the ceremony across the new bridge.

Second Narrows Bridge collapse : Gaglardi

The item is a reel of unedited film footage. Highways Minister Phil Gaglardi visits the Second Narrows Bridge construction site and inspects the section that collapsed on June 17, 1958. Shots include close-ups of the damage; reporters, police and other onlookers; a twin-rotor RCAF helicopter hovering nearby.
This reel was found among the original footage and out-takes from the film Deas Island Tunnel (1957-1959).

Second Narrows Bridge construction : footage

Contains detailed coverage of the construction of the Second Narrows Bridge spanning Burrard Inlet between North Vancouver and Vancouver. Premier W.A.C.
