Register of acts

This series contains a register of acts from British Columbia, 1859-1884; North West Territories, 1881. Individual acts are registered only up to 1872; after that the register simply notes once a year that statutes have been received. The reel also contains vol. 24, Canada, 1881-1891; vol. 48, Manitoba, 1871-1887; and vols. 54-56, New Brunswick, 1786-1838, 1839-1848, 1848-1860.

Colonial Office correspondence with regard to British Columbia

This series contains original correspondence (C.O.60/1 - C.O. 60/44), consisting of despatches (despatches from the Governor of British Columbia to the Colonial Secretary, correspondence and minutes arising from the despatches, and draft despatches from the Colonial Secretary) as well as miscellaneous letters to the Colonial Secretary from other departments of the British Government and from individuals on matters relating to British Columbia. Reel 1453 contains some pages which were not filmed at the time of the original filming.

Colonial Office "secret" supplementary correspondence

This series contains extracts from volumes in C.O. 537 series [supplementary correspondence]. The records consist mainly of despatches to and from the Secretary of State for the Colonies and the Governor-General of Canada and senior British military officers. The majority of the records were originally classified as "Secret" or "Confidential." Records pertain to all parts of Canada, but include substantial British Columbia-related material. San Juan Island dispute, B.C.'s entry into Confederation, trans-Pacific steamship services, coastal defence, and the Bering Sea sealing negotiations are but some of the issues documented in this series.

Series consists of "blue books" containing a compilation of statistical information, public accounts and general information about the Colony of Vancouver Island. Each volume includes a table of contents and includes the following sections: 1) Taxes, duties and other sources of revenue 2) Fees 3) Revenue and expenditure 4) Comparative yearly statements of revenue and expenditure 5) Local revenue 6) public debt 7) Military expenditure: militia 8) Public works 9) Legislation: laws, proclamations, etc. 10) Political Franchise 11) Council and assembly 12) Civil establishment 13) Officer who have given security for discharge of their duties 14) Pensions 15) Abstract of expenditure for civil, judicial, ecclesiastical establishments, etc. 16) Foreign consuls 17) Population 18) Savings banks, friendly societies, immigrants and emigrants, etc. 19) Ecclesiastical return 20) Education, newspapers and reviews 21) Coins exchanges, etc. 22) Imports and exports 23) Shipping 24) Agriculture, cultivated and uncultivated lands, wages, etc. 25) Manufactures, mines and fisheries 26) Grants of land 27) Gaols and Prisoners 28) Charitable and literary institutions.

The series also consists of 11 pages which may be draft copies of several parts of the 1863 blue book.
