SUPPLIED TITLE OF TAPE(S): Captain Charles Harris RECORDED: [location unknown], [196-] SUMMARY: TRACK 1: Captain Charles Harris explains how he left Halifax in 1887 to come to Victoria to get involved in the sealing trade, he describes the trip, arriving in Victoria in 1888, going to sea in 1890, becoming mate of the "Mary Taylor" in 1891, his experience in the Bering Sea, details on his career and adventures in the 1890s, a detailed account of the process of going about sealing including anecdotes, when sealing with guns was outlawed in 1911 by virtue of a treaty, more on sealing, differences in hunting techniques between Indians and white people, an anecdote about taking Haida Indians sealing, potential dangers, and anecdotes about boat. TRACK 2: Captain Harris continues by describing his impressions of early Victoria, the liquor traffic in Victoria before and during prohibition, the navy at Victoria prior to WWI, the submarines brought to Victoria in 1915, and more on changes over time in Victoria.

This series comprises a volume of letter-book copies of correspondence from Lieutenant Governor A.N. Richards to the Senior Naval Officer, Esquimalt (3 January 1879 - 2 June 1881), along with schedule of despatches received by Lieutenant Governor Edgar Dewdney from the Senior Naval Officer (1893-1896). Volume to be used in conjunction with GR-0443, vol. 66.

Letters to Harry Bedwell in Australia from his younger brother Edward Parker Bedwell, R.N.: ten were written from England, Europe and Australia, and twelve from British Columbia, 1857-1860, where Bedwell was engaged in the boundary survey on H.M.S. Plumper.

This series contains reports and despatches between the Senior Naval Officer (Esquimalt, B.C.) & the Secretary of the Admiralty, Whitehall (London, Eng.). The correspondence includes letters from colonial governors and despatches from Deputy Adjutant General (B.C. militia district). The records also include lists of naval stores storekeepers' accounts, sketch maps of naval reserves and stations, and printed reports.

Diaries, February 28, 1904 - March 10, 1905, and August 11 - December 22, 1909. The diaries describe Gelsthorpe's journey from Malta to Esquimalt, where he was employed at Dockyard; his life there from April 19, 1904 to February 28, 1905; his return to England across the U.S.A.; a visit to Victoria from August 11 - August 15, 1909; and his return to England via the C.P.R. and ship.

Series consists of logs, journals, notebooks and scrapbooks relating to naval service, 1860-1873; diaries, 1861-1920; journals of BC Pilotage Authority, 1877-1878; copy of letter, 1886, from Bishop Augustine Scriven. Excerpts from diary relating to Victoria Telephone Company available in typescript, August - December 1879. Also includes two oversized, slightly differing versions of a certificate presented to Baker upon his resignation as Secretary to the B.C. Board of Trade, September and October, 1885.

Pemberton's early life; his arrival in the colony of Vancouver island in 1851; his education; his work as surveyor; his membership in the executive; council; early trips made on Vancouver Island; and the Pemberton farm properties. He continues with a discussion of the Holmes family and his grandfather's property; the Augustus Pemberton family; qualities of the pioneers; Victoria's buildings; residential areas and property booms. TRACK 2: Major Holmes talks about the beginnings of the Island Highway; F.B. Pemberton's athleticism; the Royal Navy; prosperity booms; local incidents; the Yarrow Building; business slump after World War I; the future of Victoria and Vancouver Island; and the importance of regional planning.

Diaries. From 1896-1900, Henry was in the Royal Marine Artillery on board H.M.S. Victorious on the China Station; he emigrated to B.C. in 1911, and from November 1913 to February 1914 worked as a carpenter at South Wellington mine; in May 1914 he pre-empted Lot 8, Sayward district; he served in the army from 1915-1917, partly in England; in April 1920 the family returned to Sayward. A typescript of the diaries for 1897-1900 is filmed after the 1935-1936 diary, and contains photographs, programmes, etc. Photos transferred to Visual Records.

The item consists of a photocopied version of the "Hydrographic instructions for Captain George Richards, about to proceed to Vancouver's Island," March, 1857. The instructions from the British Admiralty were for Captain Richards, in command of the survey vessel Plumper, to make a detailed survey of the waters between Vancouver Island and the American mainland, to help determine the location of the international boundary through the San Juan Islands.
