Volume 1 includes lists of applications for naturalization. Volume 3 also includes notes by Judge Howay regarding his final day on the bench at Chilliwack in 1937. Only volume 4 is indexed.

Louis LeBourdais papers

Personal papers; subject files consisting of newspaper clippings, notes of interviews, drafts of articles, correspondence, and photographs relating to LeBourdais' interest in the history of the Cariboo district. Louis LeBourdais was born in Clinton in 1888 and died in Quesnel in 1947. He was the son of Adalbert LeBourdais, telegrapher and postmaster at Clinton and Eleanore LeBourdais. Louis LeBourdais also became a telegraph operator. He worked in Kootenay and Okanagan districts for the Canadian Pacific Railway and the Dominion Government Telegraph Service, before settling in Quesnel, apparently in the early years of World War I, as telegrapher for the Dominion Government Telegraph Service. In 1937 he became an insurance agent for the Confederation Life Association. He was elected to the provincial Legislature in 1937 as the liberal member for Cariboo district, and was re-elected in 1941 and 1945. LeBourdais was keenly interested in the history of the Cariboo district and the Central Interior in general. He wrote and sold articles on the past history of the region and on current economic trends to a number of magazines and newspapers, and was a correspondent for the Vancouver Daily Province. His topics included gold mining and the "back to the land" movement. The records were accumulated primarily in connection with LeBourdais' historical interests. Records include: papers and newspaper clippings of general interest, and subject files arranged alphabetically. The subject files consist of newspaper clippings, handwritten and typewritten drafts of articles, notes of interviews, correspondence and photographs. The bulk of the records date from the 1930s and are concerned with old timers, mining, particularly the resurgence of gold quartz mining, and the "back to the land" movement. Some subject files contain photographs. Printed material transferred to the North West Library Collection is identified in the finding aid. Approximately 450 black and white photographs, 75 black and white negatives, and nine glass negatives of various subjects, and approximately two hundred lantern slides of the Cariboo-Barkerville area were transferred to Visual Records accession, 198501-11. Mining maps of the Central Interior of British Columbia have been transferred to map registration numbers: 12916-12928. A list of maps is available at the end of the attached finding aid. LeBourdais, Louis, 1888-1947

The series consists of a bound, typed, transcript copy of a letter book kept by Joseph W. McKay at Fort Nanaimo, 1852-1853. The letters are between McKay and James Douglas, who was based at Fort Victoria. The first letter in the book is dated August 24, 1852 and is from Douglas who directed McKay to proceed to Wentuhuysen Inlet, commonly known as Nanymo Bay, to formally take possession of the coal beds on behalf of the Hudson's Bay Company. The correspondence then continues between the two men until September 27, 1853 and is mostly concerned with the coal mining operations taking place. Missing letters, most notably the section from November 6, 1852 to April 4, 1853, are listed with a note from Judge Howay explaining that "the letters were left blank in the original book, it evidently having been Mr. McKay's intention to copy them later."

The series consists of a bound, typed, transcript copy of a journal kept by Captain Charles Edward Stuart at Fort Nanaimo, 1855-1857. Stuart kept daily notes on the weather, details of ships and people arriving, and work taking place. Most of the entries are brief but many are longer with more detailed information about events happening in and around the Fort.

The series consists of correspondence, memoranda, notes, clippings and photographs on Beacon Hill Park (1921-1935), Mt. Douglas Park (1930-1935) and Walbran Park (1923-1929). There is also a history of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and diary of Frances Barkley; correspondence of Tourist Trade Development Association of Victoria and Vancouver Island, and of its Historic Objects and Natural Features Committee (1930-1941), with correspondence on the grave of Capt. George Vancouver (1935-1937), and with Denys Nelson re Indian fort at Crescent Beach.

Also included are correspondence, articles, notes on tree growth and oddities; documents concerning Fairfield Farm Estate (1910-1935), Frederick George Walker (1890, 1931); mementoes, European War 1914-1918; reminiscences, notes, invitations (1891, 1899, 1936) and notes on experiences as law clerk.

Peter Secord Lampman papers

Correspondence inward and outward, legal correspondence, receipts and accounts, invitations; correspondence of the family of James Henry White (1855-1948) of New Westminster; correspondence inward to Edward Woodman White (1887-1962) from Violet (Latham) White. Peter Secord Lampman was born on 23 June 1867 in Stamford, Ontario. He completed high school in Thorold, Ontario and attended Trinity College and Osgoode Hall in Toronto. Between 1888-1892, he read law with firms in St. Catherines, Hamilton and Toronto. Called to the Ontario Bar in 1892, he came to British Columbia and was called to the Bar in 1893. For two years he practiced law with George Powell in Victoria. In 1895, he left the practice to become Secretary of the British Columbia Law Society, a position he filled until 1905, when he was appointed judge in the County Court in Victoria. He remained on the bench of the County Court until 1936, when he retired. He was active in the North Pacific Tennis Association and the Senior's North West Golf Association. On September 26, 1901, Peter Lampman married Cecelia Maud Prior, daughter of Colonel E.G. Prior. They had one son, Thomas E. Lampman. Peter Lampman died on November 20, 1940. The records consist of 12 boxes of correspondence, receipts, accounts and invitations. One file contains papers related to the estate of E.G. Prior. Boxes 9-12 contain correspondence and papers relating to the family of Rev. James Henry White of New Westminster, in particular correspondence of James' son Edward W. White and Violet (Latham) White. This series contains correspondence from S.J. Clarke Publishing Company (Chicago), concerning E.O.S. Scholefield and F.W. Howay's history book, "British Columbia: From the Earliest Times to the Present" (1914). The correspondence is mainly addressed to Scholefield over his tardiness in completing his manuscript.
