[B.C. Ferry strike]

News item. B.C. Ferry workers have been without a contract since 01-July-1975. Union spokesman says that the problem is getting the BC Ferries management board back to the bargaining table. He singles out Dan Gallagher who has apparently been to the Labour Relations Board to try to get a strike vote by the Ferries employees declared illegal. Transportation Minister Jack Davis has "buried his head in the sand" over the whole issue, says union spokesman.

[Ferry action]

News item. Strike is being staged by members of the Ferry and Marine Workers Union, the CLC, and the BC Federation of Labour. Negotiations have been stalled since 01-July-1977, so employees have been without a contract since then. Labour Minister Allen Williams calls the walkout "irresponsible" and says employees could still receive pay if they agreed to continue working while negotiations continued through "the railways and ferries bargaining association." The B.C. government has declared the strike illegal, and threatens to fine strikers and their union if they continue to defy the back-to-work order. A union spokeswoman comments on how long the strike could last. Other ferry service and local airlines are doing a booming business with extra sailings and flights.

[Ferry strike]

News item. A return to work injunction is brought against the strikers by order of the Lieutenant-Govenor in council, and the decision of the Labour Relations Board, forcing the union to give notice that the strike is suspended. [Jetfoil]

News item. The jetfoil is seen coming into the harbours at Seattle and Victoria. Shots of crew and controls. Footage of jet foil running at speed. Unidentified spokesman (a BC Ferries official?) talks about the high capital costs of running a jetfoil service -- $20 million, plus 25 percent import duty. His second complaint is about the routes; the jet foil would be competing with the BC Ferries. His third point is that the jetfoil operates at about 50 percent capacity. He says it would be better to take the $20 million and spend it on improvements to BC Ferries' docks and other parts of the operation.

Robert Strachan personal and political papers

Series consists of personal and political material. His personal effects include correspondence with his family in Scotland and memorabilia of Strachan's boyhood (such as badges and certificates earned as a corporal in the 211st Glasgow Company of the Boys' Brigade), and family photographs. Most of Strachan's papers concern his political career, as member of the legislative assembly, and as Leader of the Opposition, and government minister.

These papers were originally arranged by topic and subject, and, as far as possible such arrangement has been maintained. Thus notes and correspondence pertaining to Strachan's constituency have been separated from papers dealing with provincial topics, such as the Columbia River power project. Similarly, papers dealing with the CCF/NDP caucus are distinct from the extensive correspondence that resulted from unrest within the New Democratic Party during the various leadership challenges of the 1960s.

Scrapbooks, Canadian Pacific Railway Company records, and subject files

The series consists of scrapbooks and subject files created by Earl Marsh together with original records, primarily from the Canadian Pacific Navigation Company, the British Columbia Coast Steamship Service (BCCSS), and the Canadian Pacific Railway Company. Created predominantly from 1900 to 1975, the records document the history of these companies and maritime history in general for British Columbia, Washington State, and Alaska.

The series consists of records about the following companies: Canadian Pacific Navigation Company; the BCCSS; the Canadian Pacific Railway Company; British Columbia Lake and River Service; Canadian Pacific Steamships Limited; Canadian National Steamship Company; Union Steamship Company of British Columbia; Washington State Ferries; Puget Sound Navigation Company; Black Ball Ferries Ltd.; Black Ball Transport Inc.; British Columbia Ferry Corporation; and Alaska Steamship Company.

Marsh maintained some of the records in scrapbooks dedicated to particular subjects. He also kept subject files which had titles and contents similar to scrapbooks. Scrapbooks and subject files about the BCCSS were typically arranged in rough alphabetical order. Additionally, Marsh kept records from the Canadian Pacific Railway Company and its subsidiaries in binders. These records, as well as scrapbooks that were not about the BCCSS, were grouped according to subject. All materials were arranged according to documentary form. For example, all of Marsh’s scrapbooks were kept separate from his subject files.

The scrapbooks and subject files assembled by Marsh include, but are not limited to, the following documentary forms: photographs; BCCSS financial records, correspondence, and reports; promotional materials for ships and cruises; newspaper and magazine clippings; ticket stubs from ships; sale agreements for ships; engineers’ reports; and insurance adjusters’ reports. Other Canadian Pacific Railway Company documents include, but are not limited to, contracts, financial records, annual directors’ reports, staff records, engineers’ reports, insurance adjusters’ reports, passenger lists, rate and schedule announcements, menus, employee newsletters, and ship schedules.

This series makes up the majority of the records in the collection.

Marsh gathered the bulk of the records between 1964 and 1973.

BC Archives has retained all records in the series with the exception of duplicates of menus, a file of newspaper trivia clippings, and six sexually explicit, photocopied comics.

Stock shot files

The series consists of images shot by Destrubé Photography and retained for future sale to and use by clients as stock images. Subject matter includes aerial views of Greater Victoria and Vancouver Island locations; BC Ferries vessels and other ships; people at work in various industries; views of the Queen Charlotte Islands; and “scenic heritage” (cemeteries, ghost towns. old buildings, etc.)
