Construction of the Lion's Gate Bridge, Vancouver

The item consists of an ECO master made from an industrial film originally made between 1937 and 1939. It contains a detailed record of the construction of the First Narrows Bridge (Lion's Gate Bridge) between Vancouver and the North Shore of Burrard Inlet. A.J.T. Taylor, who promoted the idea of the bridge and the residential development of the North Shore, is seen discussing the plans with architect John Anderson. The bridge was first crossed by a car on November 4, 1938 and opened to the public on November 12, 1938. John Anderson receives the first toll ticket. Charles Marega's sculptured lions are shown. The "Empress of Japan" steams under the bridge. On May 29, 1939 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth cross the bridge and later, under naval escort, they pass under it aboard a ship bound for Victoria.

The item is a reel of film footage. "Fourth reel of duplications and out-footage from the B.C. Forest Service's documentation of the Royal Visit of 1939. Scenes include: Huge parade of veterans with crowds near Pattullo Bridge in New Westminster, a building across the street called "Pacific Motors". [Steamship] "Prince Robert" leaving Victoria. "Will ye no come back again" captioned across the sky. People on the breakwater, Victoria, watching the ship carry the Royal couple back to Vancouver. Planes fly over Lion's Gate Bridge, Vancouver. Children dance around the maypole to honour the King and Queen. Crowds of people. Parade of veterans. King and Queen, preceded and followed by many cars, drive around a curve in the road. A ceremonial Welcome arch in Saanich. A sign reading "Saanich School Children", kids waving flags. King and Queen drive over a wooden bridge under Saanich arch, throngs of people cheering and waving flags. Lunch at a picnic table for a family. [Dam construction ; Royal visit, 1939]

Amateur film. The first 70 feet shows elements of the construction of Campbell River Dam [also known as Hart Dam or Elk Falls Dam], which was built ca. 1946-1948. The balance of the reel shows Vancouver scenes from the 1939 Royal Visit. "King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in an open car. King and Queen behind a flag-bedecked wooden wall in Empire Stadium, masses of people on the field in sports gear. Crowds along the street as King and Queen pass in open car. [Close-up] Royal car. Two following cars, crowds along the route. Interior of stadium; a huge parade of boys and girls marches onto the field. White-clad athletes perform choreographed exercises. Bicycle teams perform precision riding. Guards in scarlet uniforms. Group of Army officers. Guards in scarlet march past. Scene down a decorated Vancouver street. The visit of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth to Canada and the United States

The item is a film news reel from 1939 of the visit of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth to Canada and the United States. "The Castle Films production of the entire visit is [black and white] and is about 360 feet long. The sections filmed in British Columbia show the Royal Hudson pulling into Vancouver (with a good shot of the engine and tender); the Guard of Honour in Vancouver; the arrival and departure of the King and Queen; the arrival and departure of the King and Queen at Vancouver City Hall; and the arrival of the King and Queen at the Parliament Buildings, Victoria, and the inspection of the Honour Guard by King George. The BC Dept. of Agriculture footage is on colour stock and is 140 feet long. Scenes include: the yellow convertible and the King and Queen's limousine driving through the crowds on Government Street in Victoria. Victoria City Hall. Crowds at the Parliament Buildings. Three nurses beneath a sign reading 'First Aid Post.' Highlanders and veterans marching down the street. Tumultuous crowds massed at Parliament Buildings, soldiers, etc." (Colin Browne)

The item is a reel of film footage. "Fifth of five reels of B.C. Forest Service out-footage and duplicates from their filming of the Royal Visit of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth to Vancouver and Victoria in May 1939. Scenes include: Motorcade to the front steps of the Parliament Buildings, Victoria. Bunting on Victoria City Hall. Bunting and flags in Oak Bay. Black cars in clogged street, bunting on buildings, one says "C.C. Brown Motors" -- Esquimalt? Pipe band marches down crowded street. In Vancouver, a series of welcoming banners stretched across the streets from "The Sons and Daughters of England", "Israel's Throne", "Sons of Norway", "Municipality of Maple Ridge" and "Port Coquitlam". At Beacon Hill Park in Victoria, the King and Queen leave the reviewing stand with Premier Pattullo and other VIPs. The King inspects the Guard of Honour. Sailors march past. Vets march through crowds. Men roll up the red carpet after the King and Queen have departed. New scenes, possibly at Oakalla: B.C. Provincial Police grooming and saddling their horses. BCPP insignia on saddle blanket. BCPP sign on building. Parade of B.C. Provincial policemen, mounted, leaving their stables and riding past. Large squad of B.C. The item is a reel of film out-takes. "Arrival of 'Princess Marguerite' off Victoria, carrying King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. Fireworks. Good shot of B.C. Provincial Police lined up on their horses. Small boats milling about under Lion's Gate Bridge. Stern of the 'Prince Robert' at wharf. Soldiers in scarlets and busbies parade on wharf. King and Queen arrive, inspect Guard and leave aboard the 'Prince Robert'. In the sky, words read: "Will ye no come back again?" Three planes fly in formation overhead. King and Queen drive through stone gates. Girls perform Maypole dance. Kids with Union Jack wave and cheer. Vets look on. Banner over arch: 'Welcome to the Municipality of Maple Ridge.' Another banner: 'Coquitlam welcomes Our King and Queen.' More banners. Train entering Vancouver. Visit of His Majesty King George VI and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth to Vancouver and New Westminster -- May 1939

Special event coverage. "Good long [medium shot of] Royal Hudson Locomotive, 2850, from side. Good [close-up] front of 2850 with scarlet-jacketed, bearskinned guards on either side. Pipe band marching down street lined with people, followed by veterans with red arm bands. 'Inspection of Guard of Honour at Pier C and Procession up Burrard Street through the Welcome Arch.' The inspection is missing, but there are good shots from various angles of the royal car passing through the Welcome Arch. Royal couple en route to and arriving at City Hall, Vancouver, through crowds of people with flags, etc. King and Queen leave City Hall to tumultuous goodbye from crowds. Scenes in Vancouver Harbour as the King and Queen depart for Victoria aboard the CPR ferry 'Princess Marguerite'. The harbour is thronged with small boats waiting for them to pass. Three biplanes fly overhead, low over the Lion's Gate Bridge. The 'Princess Marguerite' sails out under the bridge. King and Queen drive through mobs of people in New Westminster. Veterans pipe band. Children dressed up in May Day costumes are waiting in Queen's Park. The royal couple arrive to a tumultuous welcome. A huge maypole display. Kids perform calisthenics. Crowds at Pattullo Bridge. The King and Queen arrive alongside the CN train and reviewing stand. King and Queen leave car, board train and train leaves, everyone waving frantically." (Colin Browne)
