Letters written by Captain and Mrs. J. N. Phillips, Wilmer, to Mrs. Phillips' mother and sister, Mrs. Oxley and Freda Oxley, of Windsor, England; the letters describe the Phillips experiences settling on land obtained from Columbia Valley Irrigated Fruit Lands, Ltd. Ink sketch of interior of house.

Presented by R. Cole, Harris, Dept., of Geography, University of British Columbia, 1977, who obtained them from Miss Elizabeth Phillips (daughter of Captain and Mrs. Phillips), London, England.

Miles, Frank Bruce, 1882-1955. Cranbrook; Dentist.

Series includes 11 volumes of diaries (1896-1906) providing a day-to-day account of personal affairs in New Brunswick, in dental college at Tufts University in Boston and in Cranbrook where Dr. Miles settled in 1904.

Also includes diary (1909) presented by Mrs. M. Pennington (Miles' daughter) in 1984.

Ker family business and personal records

Series includes correspondence, diaries, personal and business records of R.H.B. Ker, including papers of his grandfather, Robert Ker, and father, David Russell Ker.

The records consist chiefly of correspondence arranged by Ker alphabetically by subject. In addition, R.H.B. Ker preserved some of the papers of his grandfather, Robert Ker, who served as Auditor General in the colonial Government of Vancouver Island and British Columbia, and his father David Russell Ker, who was president of Brackman and Ker Milling Company Limited, and who retained some of the records of this company. These records are contained in boxes 25, and 30-33.

Personal papers

The series contains personal correspondence; letters to editors; essays, articles and lectures; poems and songs, most of which reflect Harris' socialist viewpoint.

For ease of retrieval, since some essays duplicate letters to editors, only those items which are specifically addressed to an editor are considered letters to editors; these are filed in chronological order. Those items not specifically addressed to an editor are considered essays and are arranged alphabetically by title.

Leo Nimsick records as MLA and family papers

Series consists of records including Mr. Nimsick's correspondence as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (1947-1971); his sessional notebooks (1958-1966, 1972) and speeches (1950-1954); weekly reports from the legislature (1950-1972); subject files, family papers and a scrapbook [see A00959].

Letters from Anne (McQueen) Gordon written from Nicola and Kamloops (1887-1888), St. Thomas, Ontario (1890), Salmon Arm (1894-1895), Crow's Nest Landing, Phillipps, and Gateway (1897-1905), and Victoria (1912-1925). Two letters from Jessie McQueen, Lower Nicola, 1890-1891. Anne Gordon taught school in Nicola before her marriage. In Victoria she was involved with community and women's organizations and was head of the Homes Branch of the Soldier Settlement Board.

Correspondence and other material

Correspondence re acquisition and disposal of land in Arrow lakes area of Kootenay district, 1907-1914, in partnership with A. Simmers and J.H. Parkhill; various agreements, 1906-1907; by-laws and petition for charter of incorporation of Fruit Lands of Kootenay, Limited (minutes of directors' meetings filed at start of correspondence).

Frederick Norbury papers

Series consists of photocopies of letters, 1887-1889, and diary, 1895, of Frederick Norbury describing his emigration from England and life as a rancher and occasional holder of government posts near Fort Steele, 1887-1899; 2 letters from his brother William, Kootenay district, 1888 and 1889; 2 letters from David Griffith to R.L.T. Galbraith, 1886, describing conditions at Wild Horse Creek; 2 letters from William Thomson to M.W. Schilling, 1912, re mining in Kootenay district.

The series consists of correspondence from R.T. Anderson at Lemon Creek, to his uncle Alex Anderson in Florida regarding conditions in British Columbia. It also contains partial copies of two editions of "Truth".

Western Exploration Company records

Series consists of the records of two companies; DeWolf and Ham Construction Company, Limited, whose principals were involved with the development and running of Western Exploration Company, and Western Exploration Company Limited.

Personal correspondence

The series contains personal correspondence consisting mainly of letters to his children and grandchildren, 1943-1949, and some letters to the editor; reminiscences of life in British Columbia's Cowichan (Vancouver Island) and Kootenay districts.

Born 1902 - like Johnny Walker, still going strong / Arthur G. Builder

The item is a 38 page autobiography by Arthur G. Builder titled "Born 1902 - like Johnny Walker, still going strong". Mr. Builder emigrated from England to Canada in 1923, worked at various jobs in the Kootenays, Vancouver and Port Coquitlam and the Okanagan, and in Nova Scotia. He served in the Canadian army in England during World War II and spent much of his time in England until 1973 when he returned first to the Okanagan and then to Victoria.

Adolph family notes

The file consists of the reminiscences of Frederick William Adolph who operated a lumber mill at Baynes Lake in the Kootenay district in the early twentieth century; photocopy of marriage certificate, 1861, of Frederick Adolph and Margaret Lamont, parents of F.W. Adolph and genealogical notes by Valerie Adolph.

Schofield family papers

Series consists of private correspondence and personal financial accounts of James Hargrave and his family and descendants, which include the family of John Lockhart Schofield. Records include correspondence referring to life at York Factory and in mid-nineteenth century Britain; accounts; wills and marriage contracts; correspondence regarding publishing of family papers; school reports; papers relating to the Trail Creek News; and copies of newspapers.

Arthur Stanhope Farwell papers

Arthur Stanhope Farwell was a surveyor who worked out of Nelson and Victoria, B.C.

Records include: letterbook, outward correspondence, 1901-1907; correspondence regarding West Kootenay mineral claims, 1893-1906; diaries, 1864-1867, 1888, 1892, 1894-1898, 1900-1905, 1907; financial records, 1893-1895, 1904-1906; surveyor's field notes and field books of miscellaneous West Kootenay mineral claims, Lots, and pre-emptions, 1891-1902. Also includes correspondence with Department of Lands and Works re Slocan Mining Division; correspondence with Gilbert M. Sproat re Sandon, British Columbia mineral claims, 1896, 1898; and a journal of a mineral claim survey trip in the West Kootenay, 1902.

Miscellaneous forestry records

The series consists of correspondence regarding the Royal Commission of Inquiry on Timber and Forestry, the establishment of a provincial Bureau of Forestry, and forestry conditions in Kootenay district. Includes blue print map of proposed forest districts.

William Alfred Galliher records

  • William Alfred Galliher was a barrister, judge and Member of Parliament (MP). He had interests in mining development, mineral claims and real estate.

The records include correspondence, legal documents, papers of clients, financial records, account book relating to Galliher's law practice in Nelson and Vancouver. Also, correspondence relating to mining development and mineral claims in Kootenay district with Robert Garvin McLeod (mine owner) and others; re sale of lots in the towns of Nelson, Erie, Three Forks, Comaplix, and Kaslo; re breweries, hotels, grocers, a furniture store, and other businesses in Nelson; relating to land sales of the Columbia and Kootenay Railway Company, and the Similkameen Valley Coal and Development Company; with W.H. Keary, Mayor of New Westminster, re sale of town lots; correspondence with Sir Wilfrid Laurier re Galliher's appointment as a judge for the British Columbia Court of Appeal, 1908-1909.
