The series consists of a minute book for the Sooke district created in 1865 by the Vancouver Island Gold Commissioner.

The records consist of photographic files compiled for use in the publication of the "Sound Heritage" series and other special publications of the Sound and Moving Division, Provincial Archives of British Columbia (PABC). Files contain prints, negatives, transparencies and photo duplication lists.

The quarterly journal “Sound Heritage” (1974-1980) and the monographic “Sound Heritage Series” (1980-1983) were produced by the PABC's Aural History Programme (1973-1980) and its successor, the Sound and Moving Image Division (1980-1988). The program or division was also responsible for a number of special publications, including "Steveston Recollected" (1975), "A Guide to Aural History Research" (1976), and "Camera West: British Columbia on Film, 1941-1965" (1986).

Some of the photos were also reprinted in the anthology “Sound Heritage: Voices from British Columbia” (Douglas & McIntyre, 1984).

The series comprises 20 documentary sound programs produced to accompany publications in the Sound Heritage Series, a historical quarterly published by the Provincial Archives of British Columbia (PABC) from 1976 to 1983. The archives's Aural History Programme (after 1980, the Sound and Moving Image Division) was responsible for the publication. Both the journal and the sound programs were based on excerpts from oral history interviews in the collection of the Provincial Archives. The actual editing and production of the sound programs was contracted to freelancers, often the same individual that recorded the interviews and edited the corresponding journal. The sound programs usually focused on or amplified an aspect or aspects of the the subject of the journal.

The series includes working tapes, spliced originals, volume-corrected program masters, and cassette duplicating masters.

This series consists of committee files from the Environmental Stewardship Division (ESD) of the South Coast Region, 1991-2013. The records are those of Brian Clark, who worked as the Regional Manager of Fish, Wildlife & Habitat Protection, Ministry of Environment Lands and Parks; Regional Manager of the Environmental Stewardship Division, Ministry of Water, Land and Air Protection; Regional Director of the Environmental Stewardship Division, Ministry of Environment; and Executive Director of the Resource Stewardship Division, Ministry of Forests, Lands & Natural Resource Operations. Clark also acted as Chair of Burrard Inlet Environmental Action Program (BIEAP) and Chair of Fraser River Estuary Management Program (FREMP); both of these programs ended in 2013.

The records in this series document the involvement of the environmental and resource stewardship south coast regional office in several interjurisdictional environmental advisory and planning committees, working groups, and initiatives. The committees address environmental issues relating to fish and wildlife habitat, air quality, climate change, water quality, aquatic ecology, vegetation, and terrain and soils in the Fraser Valley and Metro Vancouver area. The mandates and missions of the committees touch on the intergovernmental coordination of environmental issues, conserving agricultural and wildlife resources, and preventing the loss and degradation of coastal habitats.

Records include meeting minutes, correspondence, reports, studies, agreements, drafts, briefing notes, reference materials, financial records, agendas, presentations, annual reports, environmental assessment records and maps.

The series also includes a few files of legal materials from ESD, including correspondence, court records, briefing notes, reports, and records related to document discovery.

This series consists of executive correspondence, briefing notes and associated records created by the South Island Forest District for the years 2000-2007. Correspondence may be replying to letters from other government bodies, other levels of government, First Nations, members of the public, and forestry companies. Records relate to a variety of subjects. Most regard concerns with logging in a particular area, forestry practices, and consultation with First Nations. Records regard forest use across southern Vancouver Island, including Clayoquot Sound.

Records are covered by the Administrative Records Classification System (ARCS) numbers 280-20 and 280-30.

This series consists of a variety of resource inventories and land use plans. The records were created by the South Island Forest District and its predecessor the Port Alberni Forest District from 1975-2007.

Many of the records are recreation resource inventories. These relate to the identification of opportunities from the Provincial Forest recreation resource, to ensure that recreation values are considered in resource management decisions.

Other records include land use planning studies, protected area studies, landscape inventories integrated resource management and recreation plans, as well as questionnaires and consultation with user groups. Records regard land across the South Island Forest District, including TFL 25, TFL 44, TFL 46 and other areas near Clayoquot Sound and Barkley Sound.

These records have been classified as 16350-20 in the Forestry Operational Classification System (ORCS). However, some records may have been misclassified.

This series consists of records related to tree farm licences (TFLs) managed by the Southern Interior Forest Region and its predecessors from 1967-2003. This region was created with the amalgamation of the Nelson, Kamloops and Cariboo Forest Regions in 2003. The series includes TFL records form all three regions.

TFLs are a type of timber tenure which grants a virtually exclusive right to harvest timber and manage forests in a specified area. They are issued for a term of 25 years, but can be replaced every 5-10 years. Records relate to the following TFLs: 3, 5, 13, 14, 15, 18, 23, 33, 35, 52 and 56. Over the years, TFL boundaries and rights holders may have changed.

Records include procedures, annual reports from licence holders, recreation resource management plans, as well as general files with correspondence, reports and other records related to the licences.

Special Constable's Oath and Magistrate's Certificate appointing Special Constables under the Railway Act (1919). See Sec. 453, Chap 170, RSC 1927, 1934-1960. Volume consists of signed oaths and certificates pasted into an index volume. They give name of Stipendiary Magistrate; name of Special Constable; name of Railroad; date; signature; and location.

Series consists of special timber licences created by the Ministry of Forests and its predecessors. The ministry created these records to manage the process of providing applicants with the right to cut in forests. The records were created between 1911-1990 although the majority of the records in this series were created between 1963 and 1982. The records deal with all areas of the province and were created in accordance with the Forest Act and its sections on timber licences.

Special timber licences were first referred to in the 1888 Lands Act (SBC 1888, c. 16). The 1912 Forest Act (SBC 1912, c. 17) stated that a “special timber licence shall vest in the holder thereof all rights of property whatsoever in all trees, timber, and lumber cut within the limits of the licence during the term.” These licences remained in effect until the January 1, 1979 enactment of the new Forest Act (SBC 1978, c. 23). This 1978 act replaced special timber licences with a new form of timber licence.

The records are arranged by the timber licence number which begins with TL followed by a sequential number. The TL number was phased out in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s with the introduction of the timber licence files. Many files have the new timber licence number, which begins with “T”, written on the front of the file. There is also a sheet in the front of the file that contains information about the file that replaced it.

The files usually consist of a copy of the licence, renewal documentation, correspondence, logging inspection reports, and termination documents.

There are also two volumes of file 18043f from the Dept. of Lands and Works’ “O” files series. These files contain documentation about multiple licences. These have been placed in the last box.

This series consists of 117 volumes of special timber licences from 1884-1920. The series also includes one receipt book for the renewal of special timber licences in 1910.

This series consists of special use permit files relating to forest lands. The Forest Branch, and its successor agencies, approved these permits to give municipalities, companies and individuals the authority to use Crown forest land for a variety of land uses. Some of the permitted uses include logging, recreation, agriculture, fisheries and housing.

The records date from 1889-2011 and were created and maintained by the Victoria Forest Office. The records deal with all regions of the province. The records are arranged by special use permit number which consists of the prefix S, or SUP, and a sequential number. Note that this order may not be exact, particularly for later records.

The files contain copies of the permit, applications for a permit, correspondence, sketches and maps of the area covered by the permit, receipts for the lease payments, reports, and clearance forms. Some documents in the file have been stamped with 6-7 digit correspondence register numbers and references to the “O” lands file number.

The ministry maintained a register and index that provides additional information for each file. This index listed the following information: file number, district, forest, applicant/holder, function, location, atlas reference, date received, date cleared and comments. Although the original registers have not been transferred to the archives, the ministry provided the archives with scans of the registers.

There were multiple government offices responsible for managing these records between 1931 and 1992.

This series contains miscellaneous records from the Species at Risk Co-ordination Office (SARCO), part of the larger Integrated Land Management Bureau responsible for coordinating changes to land and resource use management plans. SARCO worked with government to protect endangered species and ecosystems at risk. They were involved in determining which species were at rick and making recommendations based on science as to what could be done to help protect and recover population numbers.

Currently this series contain files related to Mountain Caribou. Presently there are only committee files and publication files.

Within the series are records from the Cariboo-Chilcotin regional resource committee which contain general wildlife measures and recommendations for the Cariboo-Chilcotin land use plan. There are also records from the Mountain Caribou Science Team meetings which include information on business expenses, meeting agendas and correspondence.
The publication files in this series relate to news releases, such as the Forest Practices Board’s Mountain Caribou report and related responses. These files contain correspondence with feedback from members, as well as official news releases and new clippings.

This series contains an 8 page typescript of a keynote address to the District Fire Control Course at Williams Lake on April 24, 1972 given by W.E.L. Young, District Forester.

This series contains a typescript of speech given to the British Columbia Library Association convention by Minister of Education, Dr. G.M. Weir on 13 May 1946. Weir's speech, given in Nanaimo, provided a general review of the government's educational policies and priorities.

This series contains speeches to community groups by the Chief Forester. The records include an address given to the Fish and Game Protective Association in Duncan, B.C. on May 17, 1938 and the Nanaimo and District Fish and Game Protective Association on June 9, 1938. The records also include a proposed address to the Kiwanis Club, Vancouver, B.C., on June 10, 1943.

The series consists of speeches given by S.N.F. Chant (Dean of Arts at the University of British Columbia between 1949 and 1964): On university freedom, 1967, and The future of higher education in British Columbia, 1969.

These records relate to the use and management of natural resources in the area, as well as recreation resources in Provincial forests. This includes trails and historical sites with value for tourism or other recreational uses. The records document the location, management, promotion and use of such sites.

The series includes the following types of records: range management plans, recreation management plans, silviculture program evaluations, district program evaluations, and recreation resource inventories.

This series consists of silviculture experiment files created from 1910-2005 by the Squamish Forest District, a division of the Vancouver Forest Region. The ministry defines silviculture as “the art and science of controlling the establishment, growth, composition, health, and quality of forests and woodlands to meet the diverse needs and values of landowners and society on a sustainable basis.” These files document the historical silviculture treatment work that has been undertaken on specific areas of land that are referred to as openings.

The majority of the records are silviculture opening files. These files were created from the 1970s on, but may include earlier records. Openings document the historical silviculture treatment work that has been undertaken on specific areas of land that are referred to as openings. These files regard changes in the forest cover, changes in prescriptions, cut boundaries and records involving impacts on silvicultural treatments. Files may contain a wide variety of record formats including textual records, maps and photos. The textual records include computer printouts, photocopies, cards, field notes, reports and correspondence.

All opening files include maps or site plans, a forest attribute cover form and other documents related to the opening. Additional documents commonly found in files include: various survey or assessment forms; computer printouts titled the History of Crop Establishment and Tending which provides a history of use and information regarding prescriptions, site preparations, reforestation and stand tending; prescription documents, which provide the management plan for the area; stand tending cards and reports, which show completed forest treatments; and various reports.

Other types of records relate to audits and assessments for major licensees, a 5 year silviculture plan for the district, and
silviculture trials.

This series consists of a variety of records related to timber tenures created from 1976-1999 by the Squamish Forest District, a division of the Vancouver Forest Region.

The series includes the following types of timber tenures: replaceable forest licences, licences to cut, special use permits, timber licences, replaceable timber sale licences and non replaceable timber sale licences. The majority of files relate to cutting permits. Licensees were required to apply for a forest licence or similar tenure and cutting permits in order to harvest timber. Records regard the issuance, evaluation, administration, monitoring, planning, replacement, cancellation, deletion and extension of these timber tenures.

The records include legal documents, operations information, development plans, correspondence, forms, reports, maps, licences, charts, annual reports, development plans, permits, permit amendment or renewal documentation, applications, logging plans, reports, silviculture prescriptions, major licensee silviculture audits, stumpage adjustment, salvage information, and financial records.

There is also one order in council (OIC) export of timber products exemption approval file. This relates to the application for and granting of permission to export timber and timber products from the Province of British Columbia pursuant to S. 145 of the Forest Act, including inspection records.

The series consists of approximately 1005 black and white photographs taken by Mental Health Services between 1950 and 1967. The photographs consist of black and white prints and 4 x 5 acetate negatives.

The photographs are of Mental Health Services staff based at Essondale, Crease Clinic and Woodlands School. Some patient photographs are included. Some of the photographs show staff at work and were used for annual reports and other publications and some are "passport" style portraits. Most of the people in the photographs are identified and many include photograph classification numbers.

The photographs are arranged alphabetically by last name. The prints are in container 890935-0012 and the negatives are in container 890935-0010.

Series consists of stand tending reports which were created to document forest treatments in the province. According to the Ministry of Forests, “stand tending is a subset of silviculture that includes a variety of forest treatments, including pre-commercial thinning, fertilizing, pruning and commercial thinning, which are carried out to maintain a healthy forest and to increase the quality and quantity of timber produced.”

The reports were maintained by the Victoria Office of the Ministry of Forests. Each report is on a standardized form and a map of the area treated attached to many of them. The reports contain information about the forest region, the district as well as the National Topographic System map number to provide the location of the work. The forms also list the type of project that was undertaken, the project objective and the accomplishments. The forms were usually completed by the contracted party who carried out the work and there is a space on the form to record who did the work, the costs and the date that the work was started. The forms were also signed by the project foreman and forestry staff.

The records are arranged by the Forest District with individual folders for each year. The folders consist primarily of copies of the planting report form and a map of the area planted. Some folders also contain other documents such as planting inspection reports, daily planting progress reports, and correspondence.
