On 6 August 1866, the Colony of Vancouver Island and the mainland Colony of British Columbia were amalgamated under the name of the Colony of British Columbia which was often referred to as the united colony (or colonies) to distinguish it from the earlier mainland colony. The colony became the sixth province of Canada on July 20, 1871.
