Supreme Court civil and criminal notable cases

  • GR-3658
  • Series
  • 1994-2003

The records were created in an attempt to retain summary information regarding notable cases of both civil and criminal matters across BC. The copies appear to have been made by the head of Information Services at the BC Courthouse Library Society for the BC Archives. As the Library did not have access to the case files themselves, many of the records are copies of reasons for judgment or entries in the Dominion Law Reports or Western Weekly Reports. Many original case files relating to post-1950 matters have been destroyed. The series contains records relating to cases heard between 1950 and 2003, and the copies appear to have been created around 2003.

The records are arranged by case year. Some years span several files.

Surrey Supreme Court divorce orders

  • GR-4262
  • Series
  • 1974-1983

Series consists of original decrees nisi, decrees absolute, and divorce-related orders created between 1974 and 1983 by the Supreme Court Unified Family Court at Surrey. Between 1968 and 1985, a judgement by way of decree nisi required a three-month waiting period before a judgement by way of decree absolute could be applied for. During this time, a divorce was not legally in effect without a decree absolute. Some adoption orders are interfiled with the divorce records.

The records are arranged by volume and folio numbers, as assigned by the Court Registry. Not all volume numbers were assigned, but there are no gaps in the records. The records were scheduled for full retention under Court Services ORCS (schedule 100152) 51440-25.

Surveyor's notebooks

  • GR-3719
  • Series
  • 1910-1963

The series consists primarily of small, hard-cover notebooks used for recording data in the field during hydrographic survey projects. It also consists of envelopes containing various textual and cartographic records. The purpose of the records was to document information recorded by Water Management Branch field surveyors when they completed hydrographic surveys. Information was used as reference material in preparation of topographical maps. Also recorded was information relating to projects completed by the Water Branch (such as irrigation projects). Also recorded was information of the time regarding claims and claimants to water rights. The records may have a high degree of long-range research value.

Many of the field books contain data for so many different geographic locations, it was impossible to list or reflect each location in the file titles.

Relevant information is to be found in many Dept. of Lands, Water Rights Branch annual reports, where the background and execution of the hydrographic surveys around the province are discussed. See for example the Sessional Papers of British Columbia, Session 1913, pgs. D 107 to D 222.

Surveys and Mapping Branch director's files

  • GR-1544
  • Series
  • 1941-1976, 1982

The series consists of Director's files created by the Surveys and Mapping Branch between 1949 and 1976. The files are a mixture of operational and administrative files and include correspondence, memos, maps and some photographs. They are arranged by the file code system created by G.S. Andrews, director from 1951 to 1968. A list of the file codes and headings is in the first file, 0581/1.1.

The files cover all aspects of land surveys and mapping including the organization and administration of the branch, policy, associations with professional bodies, correspondence with the Federal Government, equipment and supplies and historical files created under directors G.S. Andrews (1951-1968), A.H. Ralfs (1968-1975) and E.R. McMinn (1876-1982). The series also includes one unnumbered file dated 1982 about the Alberta mapping branch.

Although there are many maps interfiled within the regular files, the last box contains only copies of published maps accumulated by Andrews between 1941 and 1972, although some of the maps are copied from earlier ones. This box was reaccessioned as M856122 and transferred to the Archives Map division in 1985 but has been reunited with the series.

Surveys Branch photo-topographical negatives

  • GR-3427
  • Series
  • 1914-1929

The series consists of glass plate photographic negatives generated by the Surveys Branch's topographical surveying parties operating in various parts of British Columbia between 1914 and 1929. These survey parties used photographs as a means of collecting data for topographical mapping done by the Geographic Division of the branch. The photographs were usually taken from the summits of hills and mountains and depict surrounding landscape.

The series is arranged into 31 sub-series, each comprised of the photographs generated by one survey party. Within each sub-series, the survey party's arrangement and original numbering of items has been retained. This arrangement and numbering is based on the original packaging of the photographs into small boxes of plates. The name of the surveyor heading each party is noted in the description of each individual sub-series.
