Tax sale registers

The series consists of two volumes of tax sale registers created by the Surveyor of Taxes between 1902 and 1925. The volumes were created for the Assessment District of Comox in order to register forfeiture procedures on lands with taxes owing.

The registers are indexed by name of person assessed and are organized by parcel or folio number. Each entry may list the following information: name of person, description of property, unpaid taxes and costs; name of purchaser and dates of various notices, letters and deeds.

Volume 1 includes index, tax sale register for the years 1902 to 1913, folios 1-798 and 1917 to 1919, folios 1-447. It also includes tax sale of crown granted mineral claims, 1910-1913 and a 1918 tax sale list.
Volume 2 includes index, tax sale register for the years 1917 to 1918, folios 519-791, tax sale of crown grant mineral claims, 1919-1925 and index to 1925 tax sale.
Each volume contains two loose pages of miscellaneous tax forms tucked into the index.

The records have been classified as 45400-05 under the Property Taxation Operational Records Classification System (ORCS).

The series consists of four folders of summaries and statements created by the Taxation Branch and its predecessor body the Surveyor of Taxes between 1906 and 1973.

Folder 1 contains compiled statements of ownership and assessment of timbered parcels on Vancouver Island and some adjacent islands, 1930.
Folder 2 contains miscellaneous tax statements showing revenue and estimates of tax on certain types of properties between 1900 and 1930, compiled around 1931.
Folder 3 contains particulars of taxation of timberland class from 1943 to 1969, compiled between 1950 and 1973.
Folder 4 contains an assessment roll of the Fruitland Rural School District from 1906.

This series is comprised of School District Information forms distributed by the Teachers Bureau to rural school teachers in 1923 and 1928 to be filled out and returned to the Bureau. The forms are questionnaires for the purpose of obtaining information about teachers’ living conditions in rural school districts. There is no record of similar forms being sent in other years.

Not every rural and assisted school is represented in this collection. Of the 684 rural and assisted schools in BC for the year ending June 1923, there are forms for 651. For the year ending June 1928, there are forms for 711 of the 728 schools.

The fonds consists of 85 cans containing ca. 320 (approximately 36,000 feet) film elements created by Bob Elliott's company Telefilm Services Limited between 1949 and 1973. The film elements are a combination of original and edited film footage including prints, positive pictures, negative pictures, A&B rolls, outs and optical tracks. The majority of the elements have not been copied onto a viewable format and are inaccessible.

A wide variety of local, industrial and promotional subjects are included, as are television commercials and news clips.
Highlights include: the demolition of the second Hotel Vancouver, 1949; British Empire Games, 1954 (including the Bannister-Landy "Miracle Mile" and the defeat of marathon runner James Peters); Princess Margaret in Vancouver, 1958; Ripple Rock explosion, 1958; CP Air's first trans-Canada jetliner flight, 1959; W.A.C. Bennett's 1960 and 1963 election campaign tours; B.C. Liberal Party convention, 1962; a filmed presentation (for TV) featuring Robert Strachan, from the NDP's 1963 election campaign; the Queen Mother's 1963 visit to Vancouver; the 1964 visit of the Beatles to Vancouver, and scenes at their Empire Stadium concert; Vancouver City Police horse training, motorcycle drill team footage, and Marine Squad on patrol in and around Vancouver Harbour, ca.1965; operations of Columbia Cellulose and Crown Zellerbach Ltd.; views of Houston and land-clearing in the Bulkley Valley, ca.1964-66; stock shots of Vancouver streets, Stanley Park, etc.; the BC Ferry Authority vessels City of Vancouver, Queen of Nanaimo and Queen of New Westminster.

Telegrams and other correspondence of the Premier

The series consists of John Robson’s correspondence and telegrams created and received in 1888, the year Robson was Provincial Secretary, Minister of Mines, acting Premier, and MLA (Member of the Legislative Assembly) for New Westminster. Robson was acting Premier during Premier Alexander Edmund Batson Davie’s long illness and upon his death in 1889, Robson became Premier. The series documents the functions and activities of a senior government official who occupied many roles. Noteworthy topics include a report of small pox among Indigenous people in Squamish and correspondence from Robson to the mayor of Vancouver, David Oppenheimer, emphasizing federal jurisdiction over Indigenous health; correspondence regarding small pox outbreaks south of the river on the mainland and Dr. Richard Bentley’s appointment as health officer; correspondence to and from Prime Minister John A. Macdonald to the Premier of BC regarding the Alaska boundary issue; construction of a railway in the Kootenays; correspondence from Robson to Mayor Oppenheimer regarding the storage of dynamite within city limits, and the response from the Mayor promising its removal to a magazine near Dead Man’s Island.

The series is arranged chronologically from Jan 1888 to Dec 1888. The records consist of correspondence files and telegrams. They were preserved by the Office of the Premier and were found in museum storage in 1980. These records were transferred to the BC Archives without a schedule.
