  • GR-3760
  • Series
  • 1942-1989

Series consists of timber sale licence files from the Kamloops Forest District. These licences provide a licensee with the right to harvest timber in a specified area.

Each file documents the issuance, administration and cancellation of timber licences as per the Forest Act. The majority of the files in this series date from 1970-1989 although there are also some files that date back to 1942. The records are from the Kamloops Forest region.

The files consist primarily of copies of the licence, applications, maps, status clearance forms, harvesting inspection reports, renewal forms, deletion notices, correspondence and reports. There are also some cash timber licences in this series (boxes 168-172) that contain cash timber licence permits.

The ministry assigned A numbers to the files which have been assigned sequentially. There are many gaps in the numbering since the central ministry office and other forest regions also used the same numbering system and the ministry only transferred cancelled licence files to the archives. There are also some files that have been classified with an “LKS” or “X” number.

The majority of the files contain two parts. These were attached to both sides of the file folder are front to front. One part consists of a copy of the licence and other legal documents whereas the second consists of related correspondence, forms and reports.

The records were created by the Kamloops Forests District as part of the following ministries:

1942-1945 Dept. of Lands
1945-1962 Dept. of Lands and Forests
1962-1975 Dept. of Lands, Forests and Water Resources

Topographic Division photo-topographical negatives

  • GR-3428
  • Series
  • 1930-1949

The series consists of glass plate photographic negatives generated by the Topographical Division's surveying parties operating in various parts of British Columbia between 1930 and 1949. These survey parties used photographs as a means of collecting data for topographical mapping done by the Topographic and Geographic Divisions of the Surveys Branch and, in many cases, for vertical control of aerial survey photographs. The photographs were usually taken from the summits of hills and mountains and depict surrounding landscape. The series is arranged into 70 sub-series, each comprised of the photographs generated by one survey party. Within each sub-series, the survey party's arrangement and original numbering of items has been retained. This arrangement and numbering is based on the original packaging of the photographs into small boxes of plates. The name of the surveyor heading each party is noted in the description of each individual sub-series.

  • 1909-1956

In 1907 the British Columbia Anti-Tuberculosis Society built the Tranquille sanatorium for the care of persons afflicted with Tuberculosis. The provincial government purchased the sanatorium in 1921 from the Society. This unit includes a small amount of material from the pre-1921 period (1909-1920).

This unit includes records of the Anti-Tuberculosis Society, correspondence of the medical superintendent of Tranquille Sanatorium with his counterparts at many sanatoria in North America and with the Deputy Provincial Secretary. The reports of the Central Council of the Tuberculosis Division and the Coordinating Committee at Tranquille give a good picture of life in the institution, as does the file labelled "Pests". The lectures and examinations for student nurses give a useful view of the understanding and treatment of the disease. The unit also includes packages for various departmental conferences in the 1930s which show how the various branches of the Department of the Provincial Secretary were coordinated.

In 1958, when it was no longer required as a tuberculosis hospital, Tranquille was transferred to Mental Health Services.
