This series consists of transcripts of evidence, exhibits and correspondence from the Royal Commission of Inquiry into the use of Pesticides and Herbicides.

This series consists of press releases, articles, speeches and other public reports created from 1932-1943. The majority of the records were created by the Minister of Mines and Deputy Minister of Mines. The records relate to all aspects of the departments work and mining in BC generally. This includes: statistical reports on provincial mining production outputs, particularly coal; the history of mining in BC; the history of the Dept. of Mines; announcements and comments on the opening or closure of mines; biographical information of department executive; considerations on the future of mining in BC; and the discussion of various issues impacting the mining industry.

The series consists of records created by the Water Rights Branch, its predecessor, the Dept. of Lands and Works and its successor, the Water Management Branch. Throughout its existence, the Water Rights Branch (WRB) acquired and created a large central set of plans, maps, and engineering drawings which was assigned a single set of sequential water rights plan numbers. Over time, the original plan series was divided into separate sub-series for the use of particular operational units.

The water rights plans series documents a broad range of WRB activities. It includes: plans and engineering drawings submitted to the WRB by individuals, corporations, and municipalities as part of their applications for water licences or for approval of works; survey plans and maps prepared by WRB field engineers and regional engineers in support of licensing activities, irrigation studies, water power investigations and dam inspections; general reference maps used by WRB staff; and a variety of charts, graphs, and other items used for WRB functions such as stream measurement and precipitation monitoring. Taken as a whole, this series constitutes a wealth of often highly detailed cartographic information on regions and communities throughout British Columbia, information which in many cases is not available elsewhere.

Of particular interest are early large-scale maps and plans which provide extensive topographic information and vegetation notes for many areas of B.C. well before those areas were covered by standard topographic maps, including areas which were later flooded due to dam construction. As well, some of the early plans of towns and of agricultural, commercial, and industrial sites include such detailed cultural and cadastral information as the location and identity of buildings and the names of property owners affected by proposed water projects. The series also contains invaluable documentation of specific major hydro-electric, irrigation, and waterworks projects in the form of site plans and engineering (structural) drawings. The series' value is enhanced by the fact that many of the items contain numbers which can be used to link the items with related records such as water records, conditional and final licences; correspondence files, water rights and reference maps, field notes, and a variety of reports.

This series consists of correspondence created or received by various employees in the Department of Fish and Wildlife from 1969-1979. This includes correspondence inwards and outwards from the Minister of the Department of Recreation and Conservation, who led the Branch at this time. The majority of the records are correspondence files, often referred to as flimsies. There are also a variety of subject files kept by the Deputy Minister and Assistant Deputy Minister. The records relate to a wide variety of topics such as habitat protection, pollution, the impacts of resource extraction projects, impacts of recreation activities, wildlife management, policy development, legislation, intergovernmental projects, fisheries management, the Mair Report, and the McCarthy Hearing or Paish Affair.

The series includes correspondence to and or from the following individuals: William K. Kiernan and Jack Radford, Minister of Recreation and Conservation; Director of Fish and Wildlife Branch; D.J. Robinson, Assistant Director, Management and Development; D.M. Galbraith, G.D. Taylor, and M.R. Whatley, Fish Habitat Improvement; E.H. Vernon, Chief of Fisheries Improvement; R.C. Thomas, Fisheries Management; I.L. Wither and C.J. Bull, Fish Habitat protection; D. Demarchi, D.R. Halladay and W.A. McKay, Wildlife Biologist; RAH Sparrow, Biologist; JG Terpenning, Superintendent of Hatcheries; K.R.D. Mundy, Assistant Chief of Wildlife Management; and W.G. Smith, Chief of Wildlife Management. Many other individuals may be included in the records, as many of the records are convenience copies sent to other executives as a reference. The minister's correspondence files may include letters written to or from other executives, such as the Deputy Minister.

Records also include memos and subject files used by particular employees. Correspondence files may include reports, maps and other enclosures. Correspondence referral replies are generally letters sent to the Minister or other executives and forwarded to other relevant employees for an answer. Many of these letters are from members of the public raising concerns over environmental issues such as pollution or industrial activities.

The series also include statistical summary sheets showing the number and types of licences (hunting, fishing, etc.) issued in each Agency from 1966-1969.

The series consists of a register created by the Government Assay Office in Victoria from 1885 to 1887. The register contains memoranda of assays done and payment received.

The series consists of a register of assays created by the Assay Office and Government Reduction Works at Barkerville between 1869 and 1895.

The series consists of records created by the Northwestern District mining engineer between 1920 and 1943.
Records include correspondence inward and outward, reports, alphabetical files and prospectuses of mining companies and correspondence about the mining of tungsten.

The series consists of correspondence out created by the Resident Mining Engineer of district no. 6 (Western) between 1935 and 1946. The correspondence is indexed by each volume.

The fonds consists of records generated by the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development, its subordinate branches, divisions and agencies and predecessors, relating to the administration of Indian affairs in British Columbia. The fonds includes records created in the offices of the Indian Reserve Commissioner, the Indian Commissioner, and the Chief-Inspector of Indian Agencies for the Department of Indian Affairs and the Indian Affairs Branch. It also includes records of the Victoria office of the Indian Superintendent of British Columbia. Copies of records from the National Archives of Canada include microfilm copies of parts of RG 10 (central registry files and records of the Indian Reserve Commission) and photocopies of finding aids. Types of records from the office of the Indian Superintendent of British Columbia include records books, cash books, cheque books, letters of credit, statement of accounts, schedules, and requisition receipt books.

The series consists of three photograph albums created by the Royal Commission on Indian Affairs between 1913 and 1916. The albums may have been created as display or presentation albums for specific commissioners. Many of the photographs in the albums duplicate each other and were also used in the published report of the commission.

The series consists of a 1969 photocopy of an alphabetical list of persons buried in the cemetery at the Public Hospital for the Insane in New Westminster (later Woodlands School) between 1922 and 1958.

These submissions were not suitable for the anthology, British Columbia: A Centennial Anthology, but because of their historical content they were loaned to the Provincial Archives for microfilming. Contents include submissions by 11 people on a wide range of subjects. There are 3 manuscripts and 18 transcripts, mostly reminiscences of pioneers, and people recording family history information.

This microfilm contains submissions to the British Columbia Centennial Anthology editorial committee. These submissions were not suitable for the anthology, British Columbia: A Centennial Anthology, but because of their historical content they were loaned to the Provincial Archives for microfilming before they were returned to their authors or sources.

The BC Archives fire insurance plan collection consists of plans of British Columbia communities acquired from various sources over the years. The plans have been arranged alphabetically by community by Archives staff. While most of the plans are large format, coloured sheets, there are also black and white photographic negatives (with diazo fiche copies for reference) and 35 mm colour slides for many of them. The photographic negatives and colour slides are not necessarily duplicates of the printed sheets in the BC Archives collection. A detailed list, arranged by community, gives details for holdings in each format. Fire insurance plans were published by various companies including the Sanborn company, the Charles E. Goad company, the Underwriters' Survey Bureau Limited, the Canadian Underwriters' Association and the British Columbia Underwriters Association. Fire Insurance plans and atlases are large-scale (high resolution) urban maps which grew out of the need of fire insurance underwriters to understand the physical characteristics of a structure to be insured. These maps show with detail colour drawings and symbols, the character of the outside and inside construction of buildings, passages, probable fire cut-offs, fire walls, openings in walls, height and occupancy or use of individual buildings or groups of buildings. Street widths, street addresses, property lines, water pipes or mains, fire hydrants and fire alarm boxes are also located on the maps. Although fire insurance plans stopped being produced in the 1970's and have long outlived their primary function, they continue to act as important source material.

The series consists of original decrees nisi, decrees absolute, divorce orders, and orders for the restoration of maiden name by the Chilliwack Supreme Court. Records date from January 1949 to December 1953, January to June 1964, and August 1984 to July 1985. Between 1968 and 1985, a judgement by way of decree nisi required a three-month waiting period before a judgement by way of decree absolute could be applied for. During this time, a divorce was not legally in effect without a decree absolute. After 1985, divorce orders automatically came into effect 31 days after the divorce was granted, barring an appeal.

The records are arranged by volume and folio numbers, as assigned by the Court Registry. The records were scheduled for full retention under Court Services ORCS (schedule 100152) 51440-25.

This series consists of records of the Commission of Inquiry relating to the Workmen's Compensation Act and Board, including, transcripts of proceedings, exhibits, list of exhibits, index of witnesses, correspondence, cash book, summary of recommendations in the Sloan Report and a draft report.

This series consists of records of the Department of Lands and Forests, Lands Service, primarily relating to leases of Crown land for various purposes. Records include cancelled or expired leases for oyster beds (including leases by the Government of Canada), hay meadow, summer resort, stone quarry, mill, coal mining, grazing, agriculture, cattle ranching, and pastoral purposes. This series also includes final agreements for sale and purchase under Soldier's Better Housing Scheme for City of Victoria lots (includes rebate applications and discharge certificates) and licences of occupation.

This series consists of architectural proposals and consultants reports on topics connected with the construction of public buildings, urban development, siting, traffic patterns, and design requirements. Reports have been created for the Department of Public Works by various sources, including Arthur Erikson Architects, The Environmental Analysis Group (TEAG), UBC School of Architecture, BCIT, Vancouver City Planning Department, and other various architects and engineers.

The series consists of general office files created by the Provincial Horticulturalist between 1912 and 1922. The files contain correspondence and reports on horticultural matters of provincial significance.

This series consists of the original signed report of the Commission Into All Matters Affecting the Values of Lands Forming Part of the Former Songhees Reserve and Apportioned to the Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railway and the Canadian Northern Railway, 1914, and correspondence regarding Howay's account for services.

The fonds consists of microfilmed copies of registers of birth, marriages and deaths, minute books, letter books, correspondence, financial records, and plans and specifications of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church; and microfilmed copies of minutes of the B.C. Synod and Presbytery of Columbia. It also includes 12 pages of blueprints of St. Andrew's church in Victoria, accompanied by correspondence.

The series consists of records created by the Minister of Public Works and includes semi-official correspondence inward relating to Public Works between 1909 and 1911 as well as semi-official correspondence inward relating to Public Works and Railways from 1911 to 1916.

The records are arranged chronologically in 23 volumes.

This series contains official reports and correspondence accumulated during the administrations of Premiers Tolmie, Pattullo, Hart, and Johnson. It includes Departmental, General, and Federal files, plus separate series of documents on Pacific Great Eastern Railway (1917-1945). It also includes applications for employment, petitions, press releases, speeches, and vouchers.

The records which comprise this unit were stored for many years in a maintenance shop adjacent to the Parliament Buildings. Storage conditions were less than ideal and in 1982 arrangements were made with the Premier's Office' to transfer the records to the Provincial Archives. It was a signal event, for the records provide documentation on virtually all facets of provincial life over a thirty-five year period. Additionally, the documents which make up GR-1222 provide a valuable record of the administrations of Premiers Tolmie (1928-1933), Pattullo (1933-1941), Hart (1941-1947) and Johnson (1947-1952). The records fall into three main categories or series, namely Departmental files, Federal files, and General files.

This series consists of records created by Road Commissioners from various road districts in the Colony of Vancouver Island, from 1861-1875. This includes the Victoria, Esquimalt, Esquimalt Town, Lake, Saanich, Metchosin, Sooke and Highlands Road Districts.

The records include financial records such as cash books, account books, road tax assessment rolls and ledgers. These track the fines and taxes collected for each district, and the expenses for road construction and maintenance. Some records indicate the individuals who paid for and worked on specific roads in the Victoria area that are still in existence today.

Other records include correspondence and minute books recording the decisions and priorities of the commissioners. These indicate where and how roads were constructed as the colony was growing.

The series consists of administrative records concerning land and resource use planning activities related to legislation, agreements, committees, reports and programs. The majority of the records come from the Ministry of Sustainable Resource Management, however some files originate from its successor body the Integrated Land Management Bureau, part of the Ministry of Agriculture and Lands. Some records may also originate from the Land Use Coordination Office.

A portion of the records deal with legislation. These records include files related to Ministry meetings on legislation, legislative programs, projects and the deregulation of statutes as recommended by the Ministry of Sustainable Resource Management, These records include proposals and numerous Requests for Legislation (RFLs), as well as status reports on the progress of bills, records of changes and a legislative calendar. Deregulation records include ministerial orders. Other orders cover the appointment of new members on advisory boards, commissions and councils (including First Nations). The records also include position statements on issues submitted by other ministries.

Report files include presentations related to land use planning and implementation, including public review drafts for general reference purposes, and trust reports such as that of the Coast Sustainability Trust.

Other records relate to conferences and committee work done by the Ministry. This includes work with the Mining Association of British Columbia, the Union of BC Municipalities, and Land and Water BC. There are also several records from committees working with or for the Fraser Basin Council Board, the Georgia Basin Ecosystem Initiative, BC Indicator’s Networking Group, and BC Rural Team. It also includes ministerial meetings and liaisons with federal agencies.

Records are mainly summary reports, agendas, summaries of decisions and actions, progress reports, minutes, schedules, information notes, speaking notes and copies of correspondence. Belonging to this series is a number of records of informational value that were physically arranged beside or near the committee files. These concern agreements such as those with Environment Canada to develop public reports and work, and with the United States to work together on the Puget Sound/Georgia Basin International Task Force, treasury board submission guidelines and the transfer of records related to commercial back country recreation from the custody of Ministry of Sustainable Resource Management to the Ministry of Small Business and Economic Development. There are also files on conferences, seminars, and symposia, again mostly related to the work of the committees. These include First Nations engagement workshops, Corporate Sustainability conference, Living Lakes conference, Fraser Basin State of the Basin conference, Georgia Basin-Puget Sound research conference, Governance for Sustainability conference, and Union of BC Municipalities conference. These files include invitations, correspondence, terms of reference, briefs, updates, event programs, organizers and sponsors, backgrounders, participants, facilitator notes, and workshop guidelines. The series also includes a limited amount of Grant files, however many grant forms are also included in committee or conference files.

The records are arranged according to ARCS schedule 100001 and cover several primary numbers under the Administrative Records Classification System (ARCS) under the primary numbers for Administration (102), Legislation (135), Agreements (146, 150), Committees (204), Conferences, seminars symposia (220), Cooperation and Liaison (235), Information services (324), Plans and programs (400), Records management (423), General reports/statistics (440) and Treasury board submissions (1250).

This series consists of registers and indexes to coroners' inquiries and inquests, 1874-1937. In the registers (1889-1937), names are listed chronologically by year. In the indexes (1879-1937), names are arranged alphabetically by year.

Coroners' inquiries and inquests that are registered and indexed in this accession are held in GR-1327 and GR-1323.

This series consists of 19 volumes of Victoria Supreme Court daily diaries, 1907, 1910-1912, 1916-1919, 1923-1932, 1934. Volume 1 includes weather reports as well as matters of the court.
