Saved to serve/ Flossie Frewing

The file consists of a photocopy of reminiscences by Flossie Frewing titled "Saved to serve". Mrs. Frewing grew up on a farm near Melville, Saskatchewan where she joined the Salvation Army. Before her marriage to Captain Ronald Frewing in 1938, she served at postings in various Ontario and prairie towns. After their marriage the Frewings served in the Peace River, Estevan, Saskatchewan and North Vancouver. They retired to Victoria, B.C.

Letter of June 1902 from Pauline Johnson to "My Bonnie Girl"

The item is a letter dated June 1902 from Pauline Johnson to "My Bonnie Girl". According to the donor, "My Bonnie Girl" was probably Grace Moore, a Vancouver poet and friend of Pauline Johnson. Mrs. Moore presented a book of her poems to the donor's mother Mrs. Edith Gray; apparently the Johnson letter was found inside that book of poems.

Entries by the unidentified diarist begin 16 June with the ship's arrival in Victoria and terminate 27 June with the ships arrival in Vancouver after visiting several Alaska ports including Metlakatla [Metlakahtla] where the visitors were received by William Duncan.

Annotated script of play "Blue Beard"

Born in India, William Tayler was a retired army officer who came to Victoria early in the 20th century and became active in local theatrical productions. This item, a heavily annotated script of the traditional play "Blue Beard", is accompanied by a note written by Bullock-Webster, 30 Sept. 1946, which reads: "[this play is] an interesting example of the early work of Major Tayler...".

B.C. Forest Service contract

The item is a B.C. Forest Service contract X61106, dated February 25, 1955, awarded to William Woods of Refuge Cove for timber sale on lot 5371 Redonda Island, New Westminster Land District. Mimeographed plan of lot 5371 attached.

The National Birthday Book

The item consists of "The National Birthday Book", a bound volume for recording birthdays of acquaintances. It was presented to George Henry Barnard of Victoria, in 1882 by his sister, Alice. There is a "character building" poem and reference to a famous individual on each page.

Are we at the crossroads? : reminiscences of Gerald Ross Hunter

The file consists of a typescript copy of the reminiscences of Gerald Ross Hunter titled "Are we at the crossroads?" Mr. Hunter was born in England, emigrated to Wynyard, Saskatchewan, moved to British Columbia in 1937 where he and his wife operated a motel on Kingsway in Vancouver, and then lived in the Fraser Valley and in Victoria.

The series consists of two scrapbooks kept by Jean Snowden MacGregor, Vancouver piano teacher, containing programmes of recitals, newspaper clippings re examination results, programmes of the Vancouver Symphony, British Columbia Musical Festival, etc. Also contains notes on the first meeting, a membership list, and programme notes of the Bayreuth Musical Club, 1928.

Letter from Thomas Porter

The item consists of a letter to "Dear Sister" (sister in law) from "James Porter and Motherless Children" dated March 10, 1859, conveying the news of his wife's death and describing his purchases of land. The letter is written on lined paper on one side of the back of which is "View of Victoria, Vancouver Island, July, 1858" accompanied by a brief written history and description of Victoria.

The file contains "Holiday notes, 1954": a description of a trip by Betty (Pilgrim) Weir of Mission. Betty Weir made the trip with her husband Jim, a vacuum cleaner salesman, through Hope, Lytton, Kamloops, Revelstoke, Enderby, Armstrong, Monte Lake, Clinton, Cache Creek and Boston Bar. Includes descriptions of people met, scenery, motels, etc.
