This series consists of range management records from the Vanderhoof Forest District for the years 1953-2004. This district was part of the Prince George Forest Region (1978-2003) and the Northern Interior Forest Region (2003-2010). Note that the names and boundaries of districts and regions varied over the years.

Records relate to the administration of Grazing Licences and Grazing Permits as defined under the Range Act, and Grazing Leases as defined under the Land Act. This includes their issuance, amendment, transfer, billing, monitoring, policy, and administration. This may include records concerning additions and deletions of land and/or authorized Animal Unit Months (AUM) from grazing tenures.

Each grazing permit and licence file relates to a particular range tenure. Note that there may be additional individuals or companies who held the tenure over time which are not listed in the file title.

Records in this series include tenure application forms, grazing plans, range use plans, correspondence, maps, surveys, reports, records determining range boundaries and use, and information on range improvements such as range seeding and clearing.

This series consists of timber tenure records created by the Vanderhoof Forest District from 1965-2004. Types of tenures include forest licences, licences to cut, timber sale licences, timber sale harvesting licences, woodlot licences and cutting permits. Licensees were required to apply for a forest licence or similar tenure and cutting permits in order to harvest timber. Records may regard the issuance, evaluation, administration, monitoring, planning, replacement, cancellation, deletion and extension of these timber tenures.

The files may consist of records such as applications, ministry approvals, copies of the permit or licence, revisions, correspondence, legal documents, annual reports, operations information, development plans, charts, procedures, audits, reviews, photos, development plans, timber cruise compilations, stumpage rates, appraisals, cruise cards, survey notes, photos, and maps.

The series consists of civil orders and reasons for judgement created by the Supreme and County courts of Vanderhoof between 1977 and 2002. Orders from Supreme and County courts have frequently been interfiled together. The records deal with a variety of civil matters, including adoption, divorce, granting of letters probate, and foreclosures. Civil orders represent the formal expression of the court’s will, whereas the reasons for judgement provide the rationale for the court’s decision. The series includes a number of certified copies of probates, the originals of which are awaiting transfer to the BC Archives as of September 2018. These probates date to the 1990s and early 2000s.

Records in this series were arranged in various ways, including by court registry file number and by volume and folio number. In some instances, the folio and volume number have been reversed on the orders themselves.

Bankruptcy minute books of meetings of creditors held in Vernon, Kelowna, Kamloops, Salmon Arm, Merritt and Penticton, 1923-1956.

The series consists of nine volumes of judges’ bench books from the Vernon County Court and the County Court of Yale holden at Vernon. The series includes both civil and criminal court cases and includes two 1934 volumes of the records of County Court Judge J.D. Swanson.

Chambers books. v. 1: October 1904 - 1907 and v. 2: 1908-1910.

The series consists of ledgers of conditional bills of sale for the Vernon area. A typical entry includes the names of both parties involved and a bill number. Most ledgers are indexed. Ledgers date from 1930 to 1953.

The series consists of nine volumes of firm declarations from the Vernon area. Unindexed ledgers are complete from 1898-1964. Indexes of firm names exist for the 1901-1950 time period, and indexes of individual names exist for 1922-1957. The series documents a wide variety of businesses, including general merchants, hotels, and metallurgists and assayers.

The series consists of grants of letters of administration created between 1892 and 1969 by the County Court of Vernon. The records typically provide information on the name of the deceased and their date and place of death, as well as the name and relationship of the appointed administrator.

Series consists of two indexes from the Vernon County Court. The location of indexed items is unknown, and items may not be in the custody of the BC Archives.

Indexes are arranged alphabetically by plaintant (vol. 1) and by defendant (vol. 2) and provide the number assigned to a case (i.e., 1/1944 to 74/1951).

The series consists of registers of naturalization indexes, as well as of one register of naturalization certificates, oaths of residence, and oaths of allegiance. The records were created and managed by the Vernon County Court between 1893 and 1973. Index registers typically provide applicants’ names, addresses, occupations, and nationalities, as well as the date of application filing, date of naturalization hearing, whether the application was approved or rejected, the date the papers and certificate were sent, the certificate number and any other remarks. Naturalization records 583 to 638 include multiple naturalization forms providing details of name, previous residence, current residence, occupation, and length of time spent residing in Canada.

Series consists of Vernon County Court plaint and procedure books from 1899 to 1960. Typical books include the names of the plaintiff(s) and defendant(s), the style of cause, the nature of the claim and a list of proceedings. Several of the print volumes include indexes.

The series consists of cause books created by the County Court of Yale holden at Vernon between 1892 and 1946. A typical entry lists the name of the deceased, the file number, and a listing of activities that took place during the process of proving the will, as well as the cost of each activity. This can include, but is not limited to, a listing of affidavits that were submitted to the court, and the date that the letters of administration were granted to the execut-or/trix. In some cases, the executor or executrix is named.

Entries in the cause book are arranged chronologically by the date of the first activity in the proceedings. Each volume is accompanied by an alphabetical index.

The series consists of one unindexed process book dating from 1913 to 1916 and two process index books. The indexes appear to be for much later records and likely date to the 1950s. A typical entry shows the date received, plaint number, plaintiff, defendant, nature of process, amount, court issued from, name of solicitor, date of return, nature of return and remarks.

The fonds consists of Denton's correspondence relating primarily to Simon Fraser, copies of Simon Fraser's 1806 and 1808 journals, notes on the fur trade, the Gold Rush, the building of the CPR, and other significant historical events.

This series consists of the operational records of the Vernon Forest District, 1913-1924. Records include operational correspondence files of the District Forester relating to forest fires, timber marketing, timber scaling, timber marks, and forest protection generally; forest fire reports, logging inspection reports, patrol diaries, and financial records. Records also include personnel files, including six photographs.

The series consists of volumes of grants of letters probate created in both the Supreme and County Courts of Vernon between 1892 and 1997. Records typically include the name of the execut-or/rix and to whom administration of the estate was granted, and are similar in content and form to grants of letters of administration. The granting of letters probate represents one step in probating the estate of a deceased individual, and grants authority to the executor or executrix to proceed with administering the estate.The majority of the records were filled out on Court forms 161 and 162. Wills are not annexed. The records are arranged chronologically by grant date.

There are no indexes to the grants specifically, but the grants themselves could be used as an index to probate records if no other index was available. The number of the probate to which the grant applies has been written at the top of each form.
