This series contains probate files for estates probated in Victoria, ca. 1859-1941. The probate files from 1859 to 1917 are organized more or less alphabetically within date groups or ranges and have been numbered, sequentially, from 1 to 5307. From 1918 onwards, probate files were assigned numbers by year in the order of filing and are more or less in chronological order. The originals of files 1 to 5307 have been retained as well as being microfilmed. Files from 1918 onwards are only available on microfilm.

In addition to the file names provided in the finding aid, an index for this collection is also available on microfilm (see GR-1417, reel B01990). Reel B01990 should be used if a name is not found on the file list, as there are 103 missing files. If a will number is provided, it can be used to locate a copy of the will in GR-1052 or GR-1574.

The fonds consists of the business records of the Victoria, Saanich & New Westminster Railway Company (VS&NW). The records document the failed attempts of the company to construct a rail and ferry link between Victoria and New Westminster and consist of meeting minutes, correspondence, financial records, lists of share holders, maps, by-laws, and various other business records. The records document exchanges between the company and engineers as well as the company and different levels of government (municipal, provincial, and federal), specifically in the company's attempts to secure funding. Amor de Cosmos was the founder of the company, however John Stuart Yates, the secretary, appears most frequently throughout the records.

The series consists of reports, correspondence, and memoranda documenting the province’s efforts at combating and eliminating violence against women. The records relate to physical, emotional, mental, and sexual abuse of women at the hands of partners, family members, and individuals sexually exploiting them. The records were created and received by the Women’s, Senior’s and Community Services division of the Ministry of Community Services between 1996 and 2004. It is unclear whether the records were created by the Stopping the Violence branch or whether they were created elsewhere in the division. The series also includes records on transitional housing.

The records are organized numerically by file code and then alphabetically by file title. The records are covered by ORCS 30000-20 and 31000-20 of schedule 117476 (Women’s Equality).

Vol. 4 contains signatures of those admitted to the Order of the Dogwood, Nov. 1966 - Oct. 1980, with signatures including the British Royal Family, Major-General George Pearkes, Nancy Greene, and Terry Fox.

Photographs depict visits to Victoria and Vancouver by Prince Philip and Prince Andrew as part of a Royal tour which included the Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, AB. Photos include sites visited such as the Vancouver Rowing Club, downtown Victoria and a presentation of the Duke of Edinburgh Awards held in the Legislative Assembly chamber. Also depicted are: Minister, Provincial Secretary and Travel Industry, Grace McCarthy; Mike Young (Mayor of Victoria); Premier W.R. (Bill) Bennett, and Lieutenant Governor Henry Pybus Bell-Irving.
