Len Norris fonds

  • PR-2154
  • Fonds
  • 1953-1988

The fonds consists of original drawings by Len Norris, created while he was employed as the political cartoonist for the Vancouver Sun newspaper. The first accession consists of 200 cartoons published in the Vancouver Sun between August 1953 and December 1988. The second accession consists of 270 rough sketches; some are undated, and the others date from May 1986 to December 1988. These sketches functioned as preliminary concept drawings for selection and editorial approval, and illustrate the artist's method of working. In some cases, these rough drawings became finished and published cartoons.

The cartoons document the career of Len Norris, and reflect political and social issues of the period. Subjects include recurring British Columbia social and political issues, and include figures from the B.C. political scene such as W.A.C. Bennett, Phil Gagliardi, Robert Strachan, Dave Barrett and Bill Vander Zalm.

Duncan Macphail fonds

  • PR-2155
  • Fonds
  • 1938-1965

The fonds consists of photographs from the late 1930s to the early 1950s, taken by Duncan Macphail, a portrait and commercial photographer. Most of the photographs were taken in the Victoria area, a smaller number in other south Vancouver Island locations and in Vancouver. They cover a vast range of subjects, including: Victoria street scenes, interiors and exteriors of buildings and business operations, industrial infrastructure, portraits, community and school events, and special events such as the visit of Princess Elizabeth to Victoria in 1951. It appears that Macphail did commercial photography for the B.C. Department of Highways (possibly in the early 1960s) but it is not known if these photographs are in the fonds. In addition to Macphail's commercial and portrait photography, the fonds consists of a small number of “art” photographic prints, matted for display in exhibitions. These cover various subjects, including totem poles. One is tagged with "Exhibited - First Annual Exhibition of Photography, Canada Pacific Exhibition. Vancouver, 1938." Macphail's original indexes are in container 000358-0037.

William S. Lythgoe fonds

  • PR-2156
  • Fonds
  • [ca. 1940-1960]

The fonds consists of photographs of hotels, motels, public houses, bars, taverns, and saloons in all regions of British Columbia; the locations are predominantly rural areas and small towns. While focusing on the buildings, the photos also contain subjects which include: people, automobiles, parking lots, street scenes, bridges, and business establishments such as stores and restaurants. The photographs probably date from the 1940s and 1950s. The photographer(s) are not identified.

The photographs probably relate to Lythgoe's activities as an inspector for the B.C. Liquor Control Board. That body created beer license files which often contained photographs. The fonds also consists of a photocopy of a seven page key/index for the photos, broken down by regions of the province. However, the key has inaccuracies when compared against the photographs. There are annotations on the reverse side of some of the photographs, providing some historical information and description of the buildings.
