This series contains correspondence relating to petroleum leases. The records consists of enquiries relating to oil lands in British Columbia (1940-1943), a general file on oil lands (1940-1956), and correspondence files on petroleum leases in Block 4593, Kootenay District, held by Borden Oil Company.

This series contains miscellaneous records of the Chief Commissioner of Lands and Works. The records consist of correspondence, receipts, accounts, petitions relating to pre-emptions, ferries, roads, public works, leases, and tax assessments. Includes (1) Metchosin District assessment roll, 1863; (2) pre-emption correspondence with William G. Cox and Peter O'Reilly, 1865, 1869; (3) receipt book for rental of crown lands, including waterfrontage and timber cutting, 1868-1869; (4) indenture for ferry charter at Omineca, 1872; (5) accounts relating to roads and bridges 1872-1873; (6) an 1880 petition re the graving dock; (7) report on Thompson River Bridge, 1876, 1882; (8) an 1892 pre-emption of Allison, Carefoot and Cameron in Yale District; (9) copy of a letter re road to Montgomery Landing, Kootenay District, 1896.

• William Alfred Galliher was a barrister, judge and Member of Parliament (MP). He had interests in mining development, mineral claims and real estate.

The records include correspondence, legal documents, papers of clients, financial records, account book relating to Galliher's law practice in Nelson and Vancouver. Also, correspondence relating to mining development and mineral claims in Kootenay district with Robert Garvin McLeod (mine owner) and others; re sale of lots in the towns of Nelson, Erie, Three Forks, Comaplix, and Kaslo; re breweries, hotels, grocers, a furniture store, and other businesses in Nelson; relating to land sales of the Columbia and Kootenay Railway Company, and the Similkameen Valley Coal and Development Company; with W.H. Keary, Mayor of New Westminster, re sale of town lots; correspondence with Sir Wilfrid Laurier re Galliher's appointment as a judge for the British Columbia Court of Appeal, 1908-1909.

Series consists of the records of two companies; DeWolf and Ham Construction Company, Limited, whose principals were involved with the development and running of Western Exploration Company, and Western Exploration Company Limited.

Series consists of documents relating to mine management for the McDonald Creek Mines (1901) and the Ptarmigan Mine (1902-1904), include payroll sheets, supplies and services invoices, hotel invoices, tax receipts, express, salary, telegraph and other operational receipts. Also certificates of work, 1895-1899, on mineral claims in the Windermere mining district and appended is a March 1902 War Bulletin relating to Russian/Japanese/Chinese hostilities and German losses in Southwest Africa.

Correspondence; scrapbooks; reminiscences; speeches, a genealogy of the Mallandaine family; and minutes of the Rugby Football Club Committee of the James Bay Athletic Association 1892-1893. Edward Mallandaine Junior was born in Victoria in July 1867, the first child of architect Edward Mallandaine and his wife Louisa (nee Townsend). Edward Mallandaine Senior had been born in Singapore on 10 August 1827 (the son of John Mallandaine and Mary Smith) and had resided in Singapore, London, Paris, Melbourne, Wolverhampton, San Francisco and Portland before coming to Victoria in 1858. He married Louisa Townsend (born 24 September 1831), daughter of Thomas and Harriet Townsend (nee Willis) on 1 September 1866. Louisa Townsend had come to Victoria in 1863 on board the bride ship Tynemouth. They had five children: Edward, Frederick (born 24 August 1868, drowned at Victoria 11 November 1895), Louisa (born 21 December 1869, married W.E.H. Corson in December 1889), Harriet (born 14 October 1872, married September 1907) and Charles (born 20 May 1875, died November 1940). Edward Mallandaine Senior died on 5 April 1905 and Louisa Mallandaine died in 1925. In 1885, the 17 year old Edward Mallandaine (having graduated from Portland High School) left Victoria to fight when news came through of the Riel Rebellion. He travelled to New Westminster, thence to Port Moody and on to Golden where news came that the rebellion had been put down and the troops from eastern Canada were going home. Disgruntled, he began for home and at Craigellachie on 7 November 1885 he witnessed the driving home of the last spike in the Canadian Pacific Railway by Lord Strathcona. He then took up a brief job as a pony express rider, the first in a varied career which included railway surveyor, architect, forestry and irrigation expert, business executive, soldier and magistrate. Mallandaine founded the town of Creston after he had become associated with F.G. Little while they were engaged in a railway survey from Bonners Ferry to Kootenay Lake. In 1898 when the Canadian Pacific Railway put through the Columbia and Western Railway, they presented a half share in the townsite to the Canadian Pacific Railway. Later Mallandaine associated with Colonel J.S. Dennis, who was Calgary Commissioner for the Canadian Pacific Railway, became a land agent for the Company in the Kootenay district and also had charge of tie and timber limits and the location and operation of tie camps and mills. He had his office in Cranbrook, reporting to Dennis at Calgary. He also put in the irrigation project at Invermere and subsequently was very active in the promotion of the Creston reclamation project, which has reclaimed thousands of fertile acres from the Columbia River flats. Mallandaine had been in the Canadian Militia from 1885-1934. When World War I broke out he was a reserve officer of the 5th Regiment Garrison Artillery, Victoria and went on active service as Colonel of the Kootenay Regiment. Later he served with the Canadian Forestry Corps. After the war he left his railway job to devote himself to the growth of the Creston area. He was the driving force in having Creston incorporated, formed the first hospital in 1930 (he had already previously formed the Creston Board of Trade in 1908), the Creston Canadian Legion Branch in 1919, the Knights of Pythias in 1928 and the Creston Rod and Gun Club. He was Creston's first postmaster, Justice of the Peace, coroner and school trustee. He was also a successful farmer, operated the Goat Mountain Water Works until the plant was sold to Creston about 1940 and was in the real estate and fire insurance business. Colonel Mallandaine was Reeve of Creston from 1936-1947. Mallandaine married Jean Ramsey of Nanaimo in 1904. His wife died in 1944 and they had had no children. He died in August 1949. MS-2565 consists of correspondence on a variety of subjects; scrapbooks, including two containing a newspaper column entitled Reminiscing written by Mallandaine (1939-1940); reminiscences about such subjects as his marriage, the day he “set Victoria's Harbour on fire,” foundation of Creston, his attendance at the last spike ceremony in 1885, Eagle Pass, etc; speeches given to the Kiwanis Club of Creston and on Remembrance Day 1922; and a genealogy of the Mallandaine family ordered by William Arthur Mallandaine of Johannesburg in 1897. This unit also contains the minutes of the Rugby Football Club Committee of the James Bay Athletic Association (1892-1893). Series includes 11 volumes of diaries (1896-1906) providing a day-to-day account of personal affairs in New Brunswick, in dental college at Tufts University in Boston and in Cranbrook where Dr. Miles settled in 1904.

Also includes diary (1909) presented by Mrs. M. Pennington (Miles' daughter) in 1984.

This series contains records relating to pre-emptions in the Cariboo, Lillooet, Lytton and Kootenay Districts recorded by various Gold Commissioners and Assistant Commissioners of Lands and Works. The records consist of correspondence, notices of claim, sketches and affidavits and pertains largely to records in the vicinities of Quesnel, Alexandria, Williams Lake, Lytton and Cache Creek. The series also includes a detailed account of town lot sales at Quesnellemouth held on 13 October 1863 as well as an application for wages due, correspondence on various land disputes, several water records, and proposed leases of government reserves.

Series consists of private correspondence and personal financial accounts of James Hargrave and his family and descendants, which include the family of John Lockhart Schofield. Records include correspondence referring to life at York Factory and in mid-nineteenth century Britain; accounts; wills and marriage contracts; correspondence regarding publishing of family papers; school reports; papers relating to the Trail Creek News; and copies of newspapers.

Robert George Joy was born in Margate, Kent, England, in 1873. He came to Canada in 1892 staying first in Nepawa, Manitoba for a year and then moving on to Revelstoke where he booked steamboat passage to Robson. He found employment as a cook for a construction camp on the Nelson and Fort Sheppard Railway. He later ran a bakery in Rossland and Nelson, and next operated a grocery store in Nelson. In his later years he worked as a meter reader for the City of Nelson electric service. Joy's interest in the history of the Kootenays led him to write a regular column for the Nelson Daily News entitled "From an Old Timer's Notebook." He was also the historian for the Nelson and District Old Timers' Association and the unofficial historian of Nelson. R.G. Joy died in 1958.

The collection consists of correspondence, accounts, clippings and papers of individuals and associations connected with the development of the Kootenays collected by R.G. Joy. Printed materials have been deposited with the British Columbia Archives Library and the Legislative Library.

Series includes correspondence, diaries, personal and business records of R.H.B. Ker, including papers of his grandfather, Robert Ker, and father, David Russell Ker.

The records consist chiefly of correspondence arranged by Ker alphabetically by subject. In addition, R.H.B. Ker preserved some of the papers of his grandfather, Robert Ker, who served as Auditor General in the colonial Government of Vancouver Island and British Columbia, and his father David Russell Ker, who was president of Brackman and Ker Milling Company Limited, and who retained some of the records of this company. These records are contained in boxes 25, and 30-33.

Series consists of some family memorabilia, and records relating to the career of J.M. Robinson as a school teacher, MLA and newspaper proprietor (Brandon Times and the Portage La Prairie Printing and Publishing Co.) in Manitoba. Several notebooks and a diary relate to his interest in prospecting in B.C. (area between Rossland and Okanagan) and to his interest in spiritualism, including its use in prospecting.

The bulk of the series consists of minute books, correspondence, financial and legal records relating to Robinson's various development companies: Okanagan Securities, Canadian Irrigated Orchards, Okanagan Realty, Naramata Supply Co., Hotel Naramata, Hotel Summerland and Crescent Beach Co.

The series also contains letters inward to the Headmistress of Naramata School for Girls, 1942-1946 and photographs of school activities, Visual Records accession 198504-16. Microfilm (neg.) 1879, 1897, 1929-1931 35 mm 6 reels [A01438-A01443] John Moore Robinson (1855-1934) moved to the Okanagan in 1898 and acquired and developed property at Peachland, Summerland and Naramata. He also had a career as a school teacher, MLA and newspaper proprietor (Brandon Times and the Portage La Prairie Printing and Publishing Company) in Manitoba. He had an interest in prospecting in British Columbia (area between Rossland and Okanagan) and spiritualism, including its use in prospecting. His business interests included the Summerland Trust Company, incorporated in 1907. The company name changed to Okanagan Trust Company Limited, on September 12, 1911, and finally to Okanagan Securities Limited on August 28, 1915. He was also involved with the Naramata Development Company (incorporated in 1907) which became Canadian Irrigated Orchards Limited in October 5, 1926. The bulk of the records consist of minute books, correspondence, financial and legal records relating to Robinson's companies: Okanagan Securities, Canadian Irrigated Orchards, Okanagan Realty, Naramata Supply Company, Hotel Naramata, Hotel Summerland and Crescent Beach Company. There are several notebooks and a diary related to prospecting and spiritualism. Also included is some family memorabilia and letters inward to the Headmistress of Naramata School for Girls, 1942-1946. Maps transferred to Map accession 19419.

The series consists of four volumes of business records created by the Ophir Bed Rock Flume Company. The records include a minute book from 1890, and ledgers and day book showing wages paid, 1886-1889. These volumes were submitted as evidence in Edward Mainwaring Johnson v. the Ophir Bed Rock Flume Company and McCallum, 1890.

These series consists primarily of photographs of logging operations in the Kootenay district, including workers and equipment. Other photographs in this series depict mining operations in the Kootenays, the city of Nelson, and the S.S. Moyie. The series also includes one map of the Plan of the City of Nelson, British Columbia, published by Stovel Company in 1912.
