This series consists of a letterbook from the Department of Lands and Works. The book includes copies of letters signed by the Chief Commissioner of Lands and Works and the Surveyor General, January 5 - August 1, 1872.

This series consists of certificates of improvement nos. 1-276, Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. Missing certificates are listed.

Certificates from before 1868 are created by the Colony of Vancouver Island Office of the Surveyor General.
Certificate from 1869-1871 are created by the Colony of British Columbia Department of Lands and Works. Certificates created after 1871 are created by the Province of British Columbia Department of Lands and Works.

This series consists of correspondence and other records from the Department of Lands and Works, and its successor, the Department of Public Works. Records include correspondence inward and tenders for Victoria Court House, 1900-1904, Government House, 1900-1904, and Parliament Buildings, 1900; specifications for Victoria Graving Dock; specifications and agreement for Lytton highway bridge, 1913; and weekly building progress reports, Government House, 1957 (reports 30-75 only).

This series consists of a record of land claims and government reservations, by William George Cox, Esq., Magistrate, Rock Creek, B.C., 1860-1862. Cox was the magistrate and Gold Commissioner for this area at the time. The volume includes descriptions of land claimed by settlers, as well as general government reserves and Indian Reserves. The back of the volume was used as a Sheriff's book for the County of Cariboo, and a police charge book, 1861.

This series consists of semi-official correspondence outward of the Chief Commissioner of Lands and Works, 1903-1904 (vol. 1) and 1906-1907 (vol. 4). Each volume has a nominal index.

This series includes notes on various inward letters in Lands Dept. vaults, 1883-1885. Contains a brief synopsis of contents of selected letters.

This series includes registers relating to Crown Grants, Similkameen Division and Osoyoos Division, Yale District (2 vols.) Volume 1 is a register of Crown Grant applications forwarded to Victoria and includes date and disposition of application, name and address of applicant, legal description of land, Crown Grant number. Volume 2 is a register of Crown Grants and includes date of notice, number of grant, legal description of land, payment schedule, disposition and Grown Grant number. The registers are arranged chronologically.

This series contains the records of the Public Works Engineer, Works Branch. It includes records such as annual reports on roads, streets and bridges, including reports and memoranda of district road and bridge superintendents. It also consists of records of expenditures necessary to build, maintain and repair bridges and returns on highways and bridges in British Columbia that would have been submitted by Government Agents.

This series contains records relating to Government House. Inventories of household goods, furniture, and effects, 1881-1882, 1899-1900, 1903; lists of goods damaged in the Government House fire, May 18, 1899; one letter regarding Government House fire insurance, July 7, 1899; Government House Insurance Policies, 1876-1906.

This series includes applications to purchase and lease lands in the Bulkley Valley, Skeena district. Includes affidavits and a list of applicants indicating lot numbers, acreage, and purchase price.

This series contains a register of auction sales of lots at Esquimalt, Hastings, Lulu Island, New Denver, Nelson, New Westminster, Vancouver, and Victoria. The register shows the name of the purchaser, a legal description, the amount paid and the terms of payment.

This series consists of a Cameron Land District land register for Section 1, Lot 3-4, 8-10 on Vancouver Island. The volume was superseded in 1875 (i.e. no further entries were made after 1875). The register contains one pre-emption entry and some notes. Information may include the name of purchaser dates and numbers of certificates issued., (including Crown Grants), along with cross references to other registers.

This series contains 2 volumes of Timber Licences Indices. These registers contain information such as the name and licence number, date, fee amount, some file references and clippings of gazette notices related mostly to the Cariboo district. Volume 1 covers the period 23 July 1907 to 12 June 1908 and contains a nominal list, an index to the Departmental Map, and the notation, "to be used in conjunction with the Timber Licence Register." Volume 2 covers the period 22 October 1907 to 27 April 1908.

This series contains correspondence inward to the Chief Commissioner of Lands and Works relating to various public works, buildings, bridges and roads, surveys, government reserves, and general land matters. This series consists of pre-emption records for west coast land relating largely to Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. The records consist of pre-emption registrations, certificates of pre-emption, pre-emption sketches, certificates that certain lands are unoccupied and open for settlement, some certificates of improvement, and correspondence.

This series consists of 11 volumes of records of the Assistant Commissioner of Lands and Works, Cariboo District, 1863-1893. Records include certificates of pre-emption, certificates of improvement, lot register of Group 1, Cariboo District, sale of town lots of Richfield, Barkerville, Cameronton, and Quesnellemouth, and certificates of purchase. Also contains water rights recorded for irrigation purposes and an accounts book.

This series contains records relating to auction sales of Prince Rupert lands in 8 volumes. The records consist of a register of auction sale of Prince Rupert lots sold on May 25, 1909 and the following days at Vancouver and Victoria, as well as a register of auction sale of Prince Rupert lots sold on August 28 and 29, 1912 held at Vancouver. The records include receipt certificates for the May 25, 1909 sale (6 volumes). Volume 1 and Volume 8 are oversize.

The collection consists of records generated by the Joint Reserve Commission, predominantly from 1876-1878. The
collection includes correspondence inward and outward, memoranda, and reports. Many of the records were sent from Commissioners to representatives of the Canadian and British Columbia governments, such as the Provincial Secretary and the Department of Indian Affairs.

The series consists of records created by the Dept. of Lands and Works between 1872 and 1896 regarding public works. The records contains contracts, specifications, correspondence, and some plans connected with the construction and repair of schools, government buildings, and smaller works.

A limited number of files contained plans and a few files contained plans only. These files are indicated in the finding aid by * and ** respectively. All plans have been removed from the files and accessioned in the Map Collection as M856047. Appendix 1 of the finding aid lists the plans.

The file list provides the file number assigned by Public Works, the original contract number in square brackets, the name of the building or work, and the date of the contract.

The series consists of specifications for Public Works buildings, including occasional plans and contract forms, created between 1872 and 1924 by the Dept. of Public Works.

The series consist s of timber mark certificates. The certificates were created in accordance with the Timber Mark Act of 1890 (SBC 1890, ch. 47). The act instructed all persons engaged in the business of lumbering, or getting out timber by floating or rafting, shall select a separate and distinct mark and register the marks with the government.

Series consists of certificate numbers 1 to 16,000 created between 1890 and 1934. The certificate forms record the file number, who the certificate was issued to, information about the timber operation, the land district and forest district. The forms also record the gazette number.

The series consists of correspondence and applications made to the Colonial Dept. of Lands and Works between 1862-1871, and its successor agency, the Provincial Dept. of Lands and Works between 1871-1873 regarding land pre-emptions in the Cariboo district. Some of the correspondence regarding mining interests originated with William Cox, the Gold Commissioner for the Cariboo district.

The series consists of a volume probably created by the Government Agent in Ashcroft on behalf of the Dept. of Lands and Works. The volume contains a list of lands to be sold in October 1902 for non-payment of taxes and includes the name of the party assessed, the description of the land, the amount due, to whom sold and the signature of the new purchaser.

This series consists of correspondence between the Department of Lands and Works and the Lieutenant Governor, or his personal secretary, from 1871-1895. The records were listed as correspondence book 479 and include an index of the included correspondence. Correspondence relates to a variety of subjects.

This series consists of records of the Commission on Allegations of Maladministration in Dept. of Lands and Works, 1898, including Report of Commissioner George A. Walkem and transcripts of evidence.

This series consists of letterpress copies of "official" correspondence outward from the Assistant to the Chief Commissioner of Lands and Works, Jan. 17, 1901 to May 26, 1903. The volumes contain nominal indexes of correspondents.

This series consists of a ledger and general record book, 1859-1871. The creator of the volume is not clear, but was likely the Government Agent who worked in or around Lytton. The volume was used for several purposes overtime. It includes the following types of information: list of pre-emptions for Lytton City; mining licences, free miner's certificates, liquor licences, trading licences, garden plots and ground rentals from the Lytton area (Fraser Canyon to Kamloops); records of miners and storekeepers occupying Crown land as garden plots and residences throughout the Fraser Canyon area; copies of bridge toll agreements and ferry operation contracts for places on the Fraser River, Thompson River, Nicola River, Savonna's ferry, Anderson River and Bridge River.

This series consists of letters inward to the Chief Commissioner of Lands, the Deputy Commissioner of Lands and the Minister of Lands regarding water rights generally, 1902-1912. These letters were transferred to Water Rights Branch files from Lands files and do not appear on the microfilm of Lands letters inward. Letters are arranged chronologically.

The series also includes a page regarding the disposition of Indian water rights by Board of Investigation from 1921-1925.
