Historical study of Canadian Pacific Railway Locomotive 42, Emory ("Old Curly").

The fonds consists of correspondence of the Harris family, principally that of Martha and Dennis Harris, memoirs, journals, business records of Dennis Harris and family memorabilia. Fonds includes records relating to Sir James Douglas, the diary of Martha Douglas kept as a child (with annotations by Douglas), published books owned by the Harris family, and a survey book of Dennis Harris for a CPR survey. Fonds also include 4 photo albums and some loose photographs.

The series consists primarily of technical drawings of ships and shipping infrastructure owned by the Canadian Pacific Railway Company, British Columbia Coast Steamship Service (BCCSS), Canadian Pacific Navigation Company, Canadian National Steamship Company, Canadian Pacific Steamship Ltd., and Columbia and Kootenay Steam Navigation Company.

Technical drawings depict decks, accommodation areas, rigging, dining saloons, cabins, ship sections, and machinery such as propeller shafts.

The majority of the drawings were created by the BCCSS. Marsh organized these drawings in 27 rolls. Each roll contained multiple drawings and was dedicated to a single ship or a select group of ships.

The single map in the series depicts Newcastle Island, where the Canadian Pacific Railway Company built a resort in the 1930s.

The construction specifications, dating from 1920, are for BCCSS ship Princess Louise II.

The records were donated directly to BC Archives by Earl Marsh in 1988.

BC Archives has retained all records in the series.

The fonds consists of copies of records created by Thomas O. Kilpatrick. They include appointments, correspondence, subject files and a diary.

RECORDED: Vancouver (B.C.), 1979-08 SUMMARY: Thomas Kilpatrick discusses the career of his father, Thomas Kilpatrick (1857-1939) with the CPR as superintendent of the Mountain Division (headquarted in Revelstoke); as a bridge inspector for the p;rovincial government; and as a manager for the PGE. Mr. Kilpatrick (senior) was an authority of wooden bridges. He retired in 1934.

The fonds consists of journals describing Daniel Mainguy's travels, his life at Chemainus and his work on the Canadian Pacific Railway. [Also available on microfilm.]
