The fonds conists of four notebook diaries kept by Thomas Frederick Seldon between May 12, 1898 and November 10, 1899 recording his experiences while travelling to the Yukon Territory via the Teslin Route, including the Stikine River, and mining and living in northwestern BC. Also included is a photocopy of a transcript of the diaries and Seldon's letters to his parents in England. This transcript was made in 1996 by Betty and George Seldon.

The series consists of the records of the board of directors, the Administrative Heads Committee (Department Head Committee), Accreditation Committee, Policy and Procedure Committee, Senior Management Team, Resident Services Committee, Resident Programme and Policy Committee, the Implementation Committee, and the Finance and Administration Committee.

The records includes meeting minutes, executive director’s reports, Glendale/Tillicum administrator’s reports, Oak Bay Lodge reports, chief executive officer’s reports, department month-end reports and audits, and the annual reports of the society and of various departments. This reporting includes resident incident reports (numbers of incidents involving residents on a monthly basis), and reports giving considerable detail on personnel.

Other records in addition to minutes are: correspondence; policy and procedure manuals; reports and studies; the society’s constitution and bylaws; Glendale organization charts (including Tillicum Lodge and Oak Bay Lodge); and a history in booklet form of the society (The Glendale Lodge Society 1970-1982 by Rosemary Neering).

Subject matter includes all aspects of the operation of the facilities. This includes coordination with provincial ministries, (including the Ministry of Social Services, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Social Services and Housing); appointments of board members; the operation of group homes in general; and all issues surrounding the closure of the Glendale facilities.

The creator of the records had no classification or coding system applied to the records. They are arranged generally by creating body (for example by the name of a committee) and then grouped chronologically.

The fonds consists of photographs and other records from 1908 to ca. 1995, created or collected by Jim Ryan in the course of his career as a photographer. There are approximately 105,738 photographs, mostly black and white and colour negatives, but also including prints, slides and glass slides. The fonds also includes textual records consisting of news stories, copies of Ryan's publications, a few letters and other such material. The majority of the photographs were taken in the Victoria area and include images of the harbour, the city, buildings, events and parks. There are many photographs of British Columbia politicians, notably W.A.C. Bennett, as well as distinguished visitors, federal and local politicians. There are also photographs of local characters, children and ordinary people. Although most of the photographs were taken in the Victoria area, there are occasional images taken in other areas of Vancouver Island as well as some of Ryan's travel photographs. Some of the earliest material relates to World War I and may be Ryan family photographs or items that Ryan collected out of interest.

The fonds also includes motion picture film material, including completed films, production elements, news stories shot for television, and selected reels of footage.

The series consists of bankruptcy orders issued by the Supreme Court in Victoria between 1920 and 1978, 1981 to 1989, and 1992 to 1994. Records for the period 1920 and 1978 are indexed, however, indexes have not been located for the later records.

Records in this series were organized by filing date.

The fonds consists of the records of Herbert Anscomb, who had one of the longest and most important political careers in the history of British Columbia. They document his activities as Reeve of Oak Bay, B.C., Mayor of Victoria, opposition member in the B.C. legislative assembly, cabinet minister in the B.C. government in numerous portfolios, leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of British Columbia, and member of the federal Royal Commission on Transportation from 1959 to 1962. Predominantly, the records relate to his political career which began with his election to Oak Bay council in 1924 and ended with his defeat in the provincial election of 1952. The fonds also consists of a relatively small number of records concerning his personal life, family, and his involvement in the wine and brewing industry.

The documentary forms most significant in number include correspondence, photographs, and speeches (in public, in the legislature, and for radio broadcast). In smaller numbers the documentary forms include handwritten notes which were passed from MLAs to Anscomb during sittings in the legislature, magazine articles, and political campaign literature such as brochures, posters and pamphlets. The fonds also includes collected editorial cartoons, caricature drawings and other art work, certificates, reports, guest and visitors books, and ephemera.

The records reflect a wide range of subjects; these include: government, politics and economic policy during the depression and World War II, the province’s coalition government, infrastructure building, political competition against the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF party), the single transferable vote electoral system, the process of appointment to government jobs, hospital insurance, and the history of the Conservative Party in B.C. and its relationship with the federal party.

Records of particular note include detailed diaries which Anscomb kept as Minister of Mines, Minister of Trade and Industry, Minister of Public Works, and Minister of Municipal Affairs in the early to mid-1940s. The fonds also consists of a rich collection of photographs which document in particular his career as mayor of Victoria and as a B.C. government cabinet minister.

The fonds also consists of a series of 12 volumes of newspaper clippings dating from 1924 to 1978. These scrapbooks cover Anscomb’s entire political career; subjects include all aspects of government and politics in Oak Bay, Victoria and the province of B.C., and not just articles pertaining to Anscomb himself. The fonds includes a manuscript of an unpublished autobiography Anscomb began in 1953.

Where possible the archivist has arranged records chronologically. Where files clearly had been used together as a group by their creator, that order was maintained.

The fonds consists of the diaries, correspondence, notebooks, survey field books, accounts, business and personal papers, photographs, watercolours, maps, and ephemera created by members of the O'Reilly family between 1830 and 1992. These records reflect the family's role as part of the inner circle of administrators during the colonial period and as part of Victoria's upper middle class, until the death of Peter O'Reilly in 1905. They also document the everyday activities and events in the life of the family. These records were previously catalogued at the item level in the Old Catalogue, primarily using classification A/E/OR3, and as MS-0412 O'Reilly family, MS-0248 O'Reilly family and MS-2086 Caroline O'Reilly. In 2001 the records were rearranged into a single fonds in preparation for a microfilming project. Records which belonged to the Trutch family (MS-2897), Edgar Dewdney (MS-2898), Weir family (MS-2896) and the William Curtis Ward (MS-2899) were removed from these collections and described separately.

The series consists of oral history interviews recorded by staff members and research associates of the Provincial Archives of B.C. Major subject areas include: political history (especially the Coalition era, the W.A.C. Bennett years, and David Barrett's NDP government); ethnic groups (including Chinese- and Japanese-Canadans); frontier and pioneer life; the forest industry; B.C. art and artists; the history of photography, filmmaking and radio broadcasting in the province; and the history of Victoria High School.

Specht, Loree Stewart, and Reuben Ware.

The record consists of a bound volume guestbook created for the open house at the Parliament buildings in Victoria, B.C. to mark the swearing-in of Premier Mike Harcourt and the executive council on November 5, 1991. Visitors to the event signed the guestbook with their names, addresses and the occasional comment.

RECORDED: Victoria (B.C.), [1991?] SUMMARY: In an interview with Fran Gundry, Madge Wolfenden discusses her career as a librarian and archivist at the Provincial Library and Provincial Archives of British Columbia. Madge Wolfenden Hamilton (1893-1992) worked at PABC from 1914 to 1954. She was Acting Provincial Archivist from 1942 to 1945, and Assistant Provincial Archivist when she retired in 1954. The interview begins with a discussion of her schooling in Victoria, B.C., her higher education, and her apprenticeship at the Victoria Public Library and the University of California, Berkeley.

The item is a transcript copy of a biography by Edward Drummond Taylor titled "A very gentle man: the Reverend George William Taylor, M.A., F.R.S.C., F.Z.S. 1854-1912". The Reverend G.W. Taylor was an Anglican clergyman in Victoria and in the Nanaimo area (Gabriola Island, Cedar, and Wellington). He was very interested in natural history, campaigned for the establishment of a Pacific marine biological station at Nanaimo and was its first curator. E.D. Taylor was his grandson.

The item is an off air recorded video. The first segment of this Arts Calendar broadcast features an interview with Robert Amos about the proposed closure of the Emily Carr Gallery.

The item consists of a video cassette tape (VHS) copied in 1990 from a 3/4 inch U-Matic video tape created by the National Archives of Canada in 1989.

County Courts had jurisdiction in criminal cases held without a jury under the provision of the federal Speedy Trials Act, first enacted in 1888.

The series consists of several different indexes relating to bankruptcy in Victoria and across the country. The records were maintained in the Victoria Supreme Court, and although they generally relate to records created in the 1960s to 1990s, at least one volume dates to the 1920s and 1930s. Early indexes are arranged alphabetically by the surname of the bankrupt individual. Later indexes, particularly those dealing with the late 1980s, are divided first by year and then arranged alphabetically. The 1989 to 1990 index provides the name of the individual, the name of the trustee, and a file number. All file numbers appear to refer to cause book entries, which give a more detailed account of proceedings in the case.

The series also consists of a subseries of records maintained by the Victoria Supreme Court that relate to bankruptcy cases heard outside of Victoria. Many of these volumes index entries in the Canada Gazette, and list individuals in Ontario and across the country. There are also several volumes that index bankruptcies across the province, and include entries from places such as Barriere, Penticton, and Rossland.

The item is a video containing footage of a recording of a 1990 budget speech delivered in the BC Legislature by Minister of Finance Mel Couvelier, and the reply by the Opposition Finance critic, Glen Clark.

The series consists of case files created by the Victoria Court of Appeal between 1980 and 1990. The Appeal Court is the highest court in the province, and hears appeals from both the Supreme Court and the Provincial Court. Records in this series are arranged numerically. Until 1984, the Court used a system of file numbers that started from 1 and refreshed every year. Records dating from 1985 onwards use a sequential “V” number that was a continual running number that did not refresh each year.

The Court of Appeal is constituted by the Court of Appeal Act (RSBC 1996, c. 77). The Court of Appeal is headed by the Chief Justice of BC and includes 14 other justices and several supernumerary justices.

The series consists of microfilmed transcripts of short essays on various subjects, including the transport and mining industries in B.C., the history of B.C., descriptions of Victoria and other B.C. cities by Cariboo grocer Leonard A. Coton. Also includes accounts of car trips taken by L.A. Coton to the Okanagan, the Cariboo and on Vancouver Island in the 1950s.

Public access. Arts Calendar was a weekly program focusing on arts events in Victoria. This episode includes a look at "Keeping the Record Straight", the BC Archives exhibit at the Emily Carr Gallery. Host Erika Kurth interviews John Bovey, Provincial Archivist, and Kathryn Bridge, who curated the exhibit.

The item is a video recording of a CKVU tv magazine episode. The series "Island this week" was a Sunday program that focused on people, events and activities on Vancouver Island. This episode includes a feature about the Sound and Moving Image Unit and the Visual Records Unit at the BC Archives.

This series consists of letters of administration (Form C) from the Supreme Court of British Columbia, from 1876-1989.

This series contains letters of administration with will annexed (Form B) from the Supreme Court of Victoria, from 1915-1989.

The series consists of both bound and loose grants of letters probate created by the Victoria Supreme Court between 1946 and 1989. Grants of letters probate were issued by the court system to grant authority to an estate’s executor/trix to administer the estate in question.

Grants of letters probate provide the name of the deceased, the date and place of death, the usual residence of the deceased, and the name of the executor.

The series is arranged by volume and folio, a system which is also broadly chronological. Grants are stamped with the volume and folio number, but also with the probate number of the deceased. An index to probate numbers can be found in GR-3016 (1950-2000) or GR-2083 (1941-1950).

The series consists of indexes to divorce cause books and case cards created by the Supreme Court of Victoria between 1965 and 1989. The indexes are arranged alphabetically and provide a case file number. This can then be used to locate the volume and folio number in the relevant cause book or case card, which can then in turn be used to obtain a copy of the divorce order.

SUMMARY: A civic election night special (probably from 1980 or 1982), featuring interviews with former aldermen Archie Wells, Waldo Skillings, and Lily Wilson; former alderman and mayor Percy George; and a taped interview with the late Percy Scurrah, former mayor.;
