Water rights records

These volumes constitute a central registry of water records from ca. 1897 to 1909. Some volumes contain copies of records made prior to 1897, some dating back to 1864. Most of the records date from 1897 and consist of a standard form that was used until 1909. The following information appears on the form itself: the date of the grant, the name of the grantee, the purpose the water is to be used for, the point of diversion as well as the eventual location to which the water is to be diverted, using a legal lot description. All the volumes have indices by name of grantee and, occasionally, by stream name. For the most part, these records are arranged according to the water districts established in 1909, with two arranged by district s created in 1914 and two arranged by mining divisions. These records often duplicate the water records kept by government agents for the same time period, but often additions made by the local official were not sent to Victoria. Checking the government agent records is the only way to fully determine what water records exist at the local level. The same is true of records of water commissioners and recorders. While water commissioners and recorders tracked down water records, the government agent records are the most comprehensive. Since the Board of Investigation used these volumes during its examination of the province's water records, many of the forms bear the stamp of the Board of Investigation noting the cancellation of the record or the granting of a conditional license. The number of the board orders authorizing these actions links these records to conditional license registers, cancellation orders, Board of Investigation files and water rights maps.
