Forms referring to experience and tenure of teachers and qualifications from rural and municipal districts, 1943-1944, and from cities, 1944-1945. The series consists of 627 b&w photographs taken or acquired by the Dept. of Education between 1944 and 1963. The photographs are of schools across B.C. and are arranged by the school district number at the time, or name of community. The photographs were taken by the the Division of Visual Education as well as by commercial photographers, School Boards and construction companies. There is some accompanying material consisting of plans, correspondence and pamphlets noted in the file list.

Dept. of Education statistics and school assessments

The series consists of records created by the Dept. of Education between 1953 and 1970. There are two files of collected statistical reports on B.C. schools, 1953-1964 and 1965-1970. The statistics gathered cover the following subjects: adult education, certification of teachers, distribution of pupils, electives, examiners, occupational classes, retention rates, school population, special classes, supervisory personnel and teacher entitlements. The reports are arranged alphabetically and were probably originally held in binders.

In addition, there is a file of compiled inspections of schools offering grade 8 senior matriculation, 1962-1964. The reports contain details of library and lab facilities and assessments of the teaching staff.

Frontier College report

This series contains a report on the work of Frontier College in British Columbia for 1953. Frontier College was a voluntary organization designed to promote citizenship and education among migratory workers in isolated camps and settlements. The College was founded in 1900 and incorporated in 1919. Instructors were recruited from Canadian universities to work as labourers-teachers in the summer months. Instructors usually worked as paid labourers by day and conducted classes in the evenings. The majority of the students were recently arrived immigrants. The report is illustrated with black and white photographs of railway labourers and workers at Kitimat and Kemano. Photographs and biographical sketches of instructors are also included.

Minister of Education presentation albums

The series consists of two presentation albums given to the Minister of Education on official occasions. The first album was presented to minister L.R. Peterson on May 17, 1957 on the occasion of the official opening of Prince George District senior and elementary schools. The album consists of black and white photographs of the new district schools and includes both interior and exterior views. The second album was presented to minister D.L. Brothers on June 4, 1971 on the occasion of the opening of the Clearview Elementary and Junior Secondary School. The album consists of black and white and colour photographs from 1969 to 1971, depicting various stages of construction of the school as well as interior views and student activities. Photographs of the official opening are also included.

This record series is composed of the 1960-1963 files of the then Minister of Education, the Hon. Leslie Peterson. The files contain his ministerial correspondence and briefs that he received as a member of the cabinet. The filing system is not consistent over the four years.

The files contain material on almost all types of education activity in the province including home economics, correspondence schools, curriculum, community programs, private schools, technical and vocational education, text books, tests, standards and measurements, religious education, teacher recruitment, the school attendance of Doukhobor children and other subjects. They also contain correspondence with the B.C. Parent Teacher Federation, the B.C. School Trustees Association, the B.C. Teacher's Federation, the Canadian Education Association, the University of British Columbia, the University of Victoria, Simon Fraser University, Jericho Hill School for the deaf and blind and other interest groups and educational institutions.

Records of the Young Voyageurs Program

The series consists of the records of the provincial coordinator of the Young Voyageurs Program. The records relate to the participation of BC high school students in the federal government of Canada’s Young Voyageurs Program. This federal-provincial program started in the 1960s to provide an opportunity for groups of students to travel to another part of Canada. These records, documenting various student exchange trips from BC to other provinces between 1961-1976, were created and maintained by the Ministry of Education, Student Services Program. Records include subject files documenting the program’s administration and operation; program reports; student reaction sheets and reports of the Young Voyageur groups; and a card file listing all Young Voyageurs groups to participate in British Columbia’s program, the geographic area they represented, and the number of students that attended.

The series is arranged alphabetically and some files have an alpha-numeric file code. The records consist of correspondence, subject files, reports, bulletins and published material. The records were transferred to the BC Archives without a records schedule.

This record series was maintained by the Administrative Services Branch of the Department of Education and relates to almost every facet of the Department's work. It includes correspondence of the Minister and department staff with the public and associations such as the B.C. Parent Teacher Federation, B.C. School Trustee's Association, B.C. Teachers' Federation and Canadian Association for Adult Education as well as correspondence with educational institutions including private schools, colleges and universities.

There are also 12 architectural drawings of schools, removed and given map registration numbers 24231C - 24242C.

The results of school trustee elections in B.C., 1962-1966, are also included in this collection in box 30.

Some statistics were collected for the Dominion Bureau of Statistics and Statistics Canada. Information relates to student demographics, teachers, length of instructional time, and subjects offered.

Records relating to the establishment of the Marine Training Centre

This series consists of records relating to the establishment of the Marine Training Centre. Records include correspondence, briefs, reports, minutes of meetings, memoranda, etc. relative to the establishment of the British Columbia Marine Training Centre in 1976. The marine college was developed by expanding on existing marine training facilities at Vancouver Community College and Vancouver Vocational Institute, but was established as an independent institution.

The bulk of this collection covers the period 1973-1977 although some files extend as far back as 1965. The series includes the following subseries: Marine Training Programmes and Facilities Advisory Committee, Marine College Development, Marine Training Advisory Council, Marine Training Centre - Miscellaneous, Committees, Navigation Training, Marine Training Conferences, Ottawa, Vancouver Vocational Institute, Courses and Programmes, Proposed Courses, and Miscellaneous.

Ministry of Education videotapes and sound recordings

The series consists of videotapes transferred to the archives from the B.C. Department of Education. The items are educational television programs produced by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC Vancouver) and sponsored by the Department of Education's Audio-Visual Services Branch in 1972 and consist of six episodes of "The world of work".

The series also includes two videos produced by the British Columbia School Trustees Association for the School Boards of British Columbia (1979-1980) and nine audio cassettes recorded in 1979 regarding BC's future in science and research.
