Records of the Continuing Care Division, a successor of the Long Term Care program. The Long Term Care program became effective 1 January 1978. It was designed to meet the needs of persons who could not live without help because of health-related problems which did not warrant care in an acute care hospital. The Ministries of Health and Human Resources were jointly responsible for the program. In 1983, the program's official designation was changed from Home Care/Long Term Care to Continuing Care Division, Institutional Services.

The series consists of the records of the Assistant Deputy Minister, Community Care Services, Ministry of Health from 1981-1985. The records reflect the mandate of the division: to manage, develop, and administer efficient and effective programs in Mental Health Services, Forensic Psychiatric Services, Alcohol and Drug programs, and Vital Statistics. This Assistant Deputy Minister position existed from 1976-1991, and was succeeded by the Assistant Deputy Minister, Care Services from 1991-1993. The Assistant Deputy Minister, Institutional Services provided direction and leadership to the programs that administered hospital care and continuing care. These programs included the Office for Seniors, BC Ambulance Service, Continuing Care Division, Facilities Planning and Construction Division, Hospital Programs Division, Institutional Management Resources Division, and Emergency Medical Assistants Licensing Branch.

This series consists of the executive records of the Assistant Deputy Ministry (ADM), Community and Family Health, 1987-1990. These records document the creation of the Community and Family Health division which was the amalgamation of the previously separate Preventative and Community Care Services in 1988. The new division included all Public Health promotion and protection programs delivered through health units across the province and the BC Centre for Disease Control, and programs operated or funded by Mental Health Services, Forensic Psychiatric Services, and Services to the Handicapped. Examples of records documenting these activities include the advisory committee on health promotion and wellness (Preventative Services), vocational rehabilitation of disabled persons (Services to the Handicapped), and child and youth mental health services (Mental Health Services). Records also include program specific reports, correspondence on restructuring the Community and Family Health division, program specific briefing notes, cooperation and liaison files documenting significant program specific relationships (Associated Boards of Health), and other related committee activities such as the hospital and community partnership program committee and the interministerial committee on strengthening the family. This series consists of the records of the Aboriginal Health Association of BC, under the Aboriginal Division of the Ministry of Health. Consists primarily of records of the Northeast, Northwest, Thompson Okanagan Kootenay, and Vancouver Island and Central Coast Aboriginal Health Councils. These regional councils were funded by the Aboriginal Health Association of BC to provided services and resources to individuals in their regions. The series consists of the records of the Health Professions Council, an independent advisory body established in 1990 to make recommendations to the Minister of Health and Minister Responsible for Seniors about the regulation of health professions under the Health Professions Act (S.B.C. 1990, c.50). The records document the establishment of health professions under legislation and the review of legislation related to those professions. Records include applications by health care practitioner groups such as physicians, nurses, psychologists, chiropractors, physical therapists, naturopaths, and massage therapists seeking designation as self-regulated professions; and scope of practice and legislative framework reviews for all designated health professions. The records were created between 1993 and 2004 in BC. The Ministry of Health is responsible for this record series. Following the government’s 2001 core services review, amendments to the Health Professions Act (RSBC 1996, c. 183) ended the Health Professions Council in 2002.

The Conversation on Health was a year-long, public engagement initiative that used a variety of facilitation techniques and communication channels to reach as many British Columbians as possible to understand their issues and prepare for the future of health care in the province. This series includes records relating to the approval, planning and evaluation of the Conversation on Health project and records summarizing and assessing feedback from stakeholders such as individuals, patients, health care workers, professional associations, health organizations, First Nations, academics, and other interested parties from 2006-2007. These records were created and received under the authority of the Speech from the Throne on February 14, 2006 which established the operational responsibilities and functions of the creating agency. The Conversation on Health project was launched by the Premier and Minister of Health on September 28, 2006 at the BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver.
