Ship log books

The series consists of ship log books from the British Columbia Coast Steamship Service (BCCSS) and the Canadian Pacific Navigation Company that were collected by Earl Marsh. Log books in the series were created between 1900 and 1974, with the majority originating from 1970-1974. These volumes pertain to British Columbia, Washington State, and Alaska.

The series contains a set of pilot house log books from Princess Marguerite II, covering the period from September 1970-July 1974. Additional log books are included from Princess Louise I, S.S. Hating (later Princess May), S.S. Charmer, Princess Beatrice, Princess Mary, Princess Louise II, Princess Kathleen, Princess Marguerite I, Princess Norah, Princess Elizabeth, Princess Joan, Princess Charlotte, and Tug Kyuquot.

Log books are usually pilot house logs, though an engine room log book is also included. Volumes tend to feature entries for each voyage made by a ship. An entry often records the voyage destination and departure locations, departure and arrival times, distance travelled, engine revolutions, and information about the tide, wind, and weather.

Volumes from Princess Marguerite II were arranged chronologically. Volumes from other ships were in random order. Marsh likely collected these books between 1964 and 1973.

BC Archives has retained all records in the series.

Provincial Administration records

Series consists primarily of copies of documents created for or by the Province Leader and Provincial Council, but also includes notes from various committees, historical notes on the Province, correspondence, photographs, statistics, and high-level documentation that related to the Province and the Congregation as a whole.

Originally, the Provincial Administrator was referred to as the Province Secretary, and acted as the secretary to the Provincial Superior or Provincial Leader. Until the early 2000s, this position was held by a Sister of St. Ann, now it held by a lay staff member. The position has since changed and has become known as Executive Director, and continues as of 2024. The Executive Director inherited the Province Secretary’s files.

The series has been arranged into two subseries: A. Provincial Administrator records subseries, B. Provincial Administration office files subseries. The second subseries reflects the previously unprocessed records with little provenance that were arranged into this series after transfer to the BC Archives.

  • Series
  • 1938-1970, 1972

This series consists of 1938-1970 and 1972 British Columbia coroners' inquiries filed within Attorney General correspondence under AG file code C-81-4. Inquiries are investigations conducted by a single coroner and usually consist of a single form. Not all coroners’ records between 1859 and 1970 have survived or are in the legal custody of the BC Archives. In this series, Vancouver inquiries do not begin until 1966.

Records are arranged alphabetically by community, repeated across several date ranges. Researchers should carefully crosscheck communities against dates when seeking specific records. On reels B04985 to B04987, record pages are consecutively numbered. On reels B04988 to B05026, record pages are consecutively numbered within a community. On reels B05027 to B05084, pages are consecutively numbered within a record.

Stamp albums

The series consists of three albums containing postage stamps, arranged by theme. The first album, entitled "Silver Jubilee Commemoration" contains postage stamps of the British Empire and celebrates the 25th anniversary (May 6, 1910) of King George V and Queen Mary. The second two albums are entitled "Canada Historical" (volumes 1 and 2). Volume 1 contains Canada postage stamps dating from 1870-1908, however it may have been compiled by Draycott in 1936 or 1937. It was exhibited at the Canadian National Philatelic Exhibition in 1937. Volume 2 was compiled in 1936 and exhibited at the Pacific International Philatelic Exhibition in 1938. Supplementary correspondence, clippings, and exhibit catalogues for each are included among the documents.

Surrey Supreme Court divorce orders

  • GR-4262
  • Series
  • 1974-1983

Series consists of original decrees nisi, decrees absolute, and divorce-related orders created between 1974 and 1983 by the Supreme Court Unified Family Court at Surrey. Between 1968 and 1985, a judgement by way of decree nisi required a three-month waiting period before a judgement by way of decree absolute could be applied for. During this time, a divorce was not legally in effect without a decree absolute. Some adoption orders are interfiled with the divorce records.

The records are arranged by volume and folio numbers, as assigned by the Court Registry. Not all volume numbers were assigned, but there are no gaps in the records. The records were scheduled for full retention under Court Services ORCS (schedule 100152) 51440-25.

Robert H.B. Ker photographs

The series consists of ca. 1000 photographs. They include prints, postcards and negatives of soldiers, family groups and holidays. The negative albums are indexed.

Ernest Crocker photos and ephemera

The series consists of an assortment of over 600 black and white photos and negatives, largely attributed to Ernest Crocker. Many of these are of familiar Crocker themes, such as World War One, houses and buildings in Victoria, portraits of families and individuals, as well as scenic photos, taken largely on Vancouver Island, but also British Columbia as well as overseas. In addition, there is some ephemera in the form of postcards, advertising brochures, correspondence to Ernest Crocker, sales receipts with regards his many clients who purchased his photos, as well as his price lists. Within the series is the embossed metal stamp for 'Trio'.

Other material within the series consists of items that was apparently collected by Crocker during his lifetime. This includes correspondence and postcards, photos by other photographers, and a piece of artwork by John P. Peters.

Given the large volume of other Crocker material in this fonds, it is possible that there are duplicates of some of his photos (notably those relating to WW1), within this series. There is also material that is unique, however, such as the 'Trio' stamp, his correspondence, and order slips.

The dates of the series are from 1887 to around the end of World War 2 in 1945.
