This series consists of a wide variety of records received or created by government officials in the Cariboo region from 1868 to 1915. Most of the records are addressed to government officials or were created by courts in the following places: Richfield, Barkerville, Quesnelle Forks and other locations in the Cariboo district. Over the years, the government offices responsible for the entire Cariboo district were located in each of these towns. The majority of the records appear to have been received by the Government Office, Richfield.

At this time government offices held a very wide range of responsibilities which could be done by as few as one person. The records relate to several government officials: the Gold Commissioner, Government Agent, Magistrate, County Court judge and Supreme Court judge.

The majority of the records are related to leasing, purchasing or gaining access to water for mining claims. This includes some records from the Gold Commissioner court.

There are also many county court and supreme court records. These records include summons; wills; probate and other estate records; search warrants; assizes; court transcripts; evidence; coroner inquest records; assize court calendars; sheriff records; and notes of the Board of Liquor Licence Commissioners approving renewal of liquor licences.

Other types of records include general correspondence from settlers; census data; voters lists; voter registration forms from Keithley Creek; criminal statistics; Land Ordinances; pre-emption records and other records related to the Land Act; naturalization oaths; indentures; receipts and financial records; maps; petitions for liquor licences; a BC Savings Bank (Cariboo Branch) depositors book; and a register of letters inward and outward for 1910-1915.

This series consists of a cash book from the Cariboo Supreme Court, 1866-1871.

The series consists of naturalization indexes arranged chronologically and alphabetically and created under the Naturalization Act (RSC, 1906, Cap. 77).. The first index covers the Cariboo District for June 1914 to September 1929 and the second volume covers the period 1934 to 1955.

The series consists of a microfilmed copy of a plaint and procedure book for the County Court of Cariboo, created between May 1907 and March 1954. The volume includes proceedings from sessions held at Barkerville, Soda Creek, Richfield, 150 Mile House, Quesnel and South Fort George, although the court appears to have settled at Barkerville after 1911.

The series consists of a plaint and procedure book for 150 Mile House created from January 1908 to December 1921, and for Williams Lake created from January 1922 to March 1939 (indexed).

The series consists of a Magistrate's record book for Quesnel, created between December 1892 and July 1896. The volume continues as Provincial Police (Quesnel) daily diary from August 1896 to May 1915. Back pages include the following: applications for gun licences; constable's account book; police court and gaol inventories; and mining claims, 1912. A second volume is a register of motor-vehicles licences in the Quesnel area, from 1922 to 1924, giving owner's name, description of vehicle, and licence, engine and serial numbers. The volume continues with lists of individuals receiving chauffeur's licences, 1922 to 1924; and the remainder is a daily diary for Provincial Police (Quesnel), from September 1931 to July 1934. The back of the book has a list of motor vehicle registrations for1921.

The series consists of records created by the Cariboo Gold Commissioner between 1863 and 1868. It contains correspondence and indentures re mining companies and notes re court cases.

Miscellaneous court documents, civil and criminal, at all court levels. Includes summonses, exhibits, warrants, orders, affidavits and sheriff forms, from Barkerville, Quesnel, Soda Creek, Richfield and Lytton.

Notebook with entries in 3 different hands. Most of the book (starting at a page numbered 34) is an Assize record book kept by A.T. Bushby. This starts with a handwritten copies of oaths used in court: for Jurors in Lunacy, Grand Jurors, Foremen of the Jury, Petit Jurors (criminal and civil), Witnesses, and Interpreters; also a copy of the "7 Steps to Opening of Court". Starting December 1864, there are notes on criminal cases and bankruptcy, insolvency, winding-up, Chancery and probate cases, many held in Chambers. G.A. Walkem, H.P. Walker, Mr. Barnston and A.R. Robertson are mentioned as Attorneys, Oliver Hare as the Official Assignee. February 15, 1865 Clement Francis Cornwall is admitted on the Roll of British Columbia to practice as barrister at Law; November 25, 1865, Robert Edwin Jackson (Drake and Jackson, Victoria, VI) applied to be admitted to practice in British Columbia as a solicitor. For each Assize there is a list of Jurors: New Westminster (March 25, April 1, May 3, 1865); Lytton (May 13, 1865); Lillooet (May 23, 1865); Quesnellemouth (June 10,1865); Richfield (June 20, 1865); New Westminster (June 28 - Jul 14, 1865); Richfield (July 20, 1865); Kootenay (September 18, 1865); Lytton (November 6, 1865); Yale (November 11, 1865); New Westminster (November 17, 1865 - March 1867). This notebook corresponds with the more detailed Begbie benchbook GR-2025, volume 5). Bill of Sale record of registrations (1-10) kept by Oliver Hare for "Keithley and Mouth of Quesnelle district, 1873"; one page, dated 1877, lists three mining claims at Keithley Creek.

Criminal case files 1926-1947.

Civil case files with the exception of probate/estate files (GR-2020 & GR-2021), Mechanic's liens (GR-2347) and naturalization files (GR-2348) which are filed separately.

Naturalization case files (1914-1959), plus three files of correspondence regarding naturalization applications (1944-1958) and one file of correspondence, circulars, regulations, forms, fee schedules, etc. from the federal government (1948-1955).

The series consists of record books, primarily for Chambers proceedings. Series also includes some Assizes material and references to Citizenship Court. The records were created by the Williams Lake County Court between January 1939 and December 1967.

This series consists of three volumes of Richfield Magistrate's record books. Volumes are a charge and sentence book, 1862-1874; charge and sentence book, 1974-1978, containing licencing records kept by the court registry, 1878-1907; and a notebook, 1887-1914, recording Magistrate's court cases at Richfield, Small Debts Court cases at Richfield and some cases at Soda Creek and Quesnel.

This series contains plaint and procedure books, 1864-1896. In addition to the County Court of Cariboo at Quesnel, also includes cases heard in the County Court of Cariboo at Soda Creek, Richfield, and 150 Mile House.

The series consists of one ledger that includes both advance and refund information as well as balances from the Barkerville Small Debts Court. The first ten pages of the ledger appear to have been used by the Government Agent in Barkerville, and provide information on cash advances and refunds from 1941 to 1948. Many of the advances were made to police constables, and included in the ledger are several “Authority for Cash Advance” forms addressed to the Government Agent at Barkerville and signed by Sergeant T. R. Baker, who may have been provincial police sergeant Thomas Raymond Baker.

The second half of the ledger includes a list of receipts and disbursements for the Small Debts Court, presumed to be at Barkerville.

The series consists of one volume of the naturalization register created at the County Court of Quesnel. Records date to between 1914 and 1977. The ledger is arranged alphabetically and entries provide information on the full name of applicant, their occupation, former place of residence, current place of residence, the date notice and papers were filed, the date naturalization certificate was issued, the date it was delivered and to whom it was delivered. Places of residence include Quesnel, Cottonwood, Moose Heights, Wells, Hixon, Barkerville, and Van Winkle. The register also includes a “declaration of intent” list tucked into the front cover.

The series consists of Quesnel divorce case files from 1930 to 1948.

The series consists of Firm individual index books for the Cariboo District, from January 1900 to April 1918.

The series consists of return of summary convictions and preliminary hearings created by the Williams Lake Magistrate's Court from January 1923 to August 1924. The volume also contains lists of Justices of the Peace and Stipendiary Magistrates, December 1930 to June 1950. The list (beginning on page 100 of the volume) gives names of the officials, their addresses, towns where they sat, and quarterly dates regarding their appointments.

Register of Mechanic's and Woodmen's Liens, Jan. 1880 - July 1900 (cases #1-29). The volume includes cases from Barkerville, Soda Creek, Quesnelmouth, and 150 Mile House.

Civil case material.

The series consists of record books created by the Williams Lake County Court between 1960 and 1962, 1964, and 1967 to 1968.

The series consists of a charge book created at 150 Mile House between 1887 and 1911. The book records details of individuals cases of criminal activity tried by the Indian Agent, the Justice of the Peace or the Judge. Details of each charge include date, name, age, calling (profession), place of residence, charge, sentence and other remarks. The book is not indexed.

This series consists of 24 volumes of plaint and procedure books from sittings at Richfield, Williams Lake, Soda Creek, Barkerville, Quesnel, Ashcroft, and 150 Mile House, 1862-1910; cash book, 1862-1883; sheriff's fee book, 1864-1865; bench books, 1864-1867; and Gold Commissioner's Court case books, 1864-1893. Note that a single volume may have been used for multiple purposes.

The series consists of preliminary hearing and speedy trial files created by the Cariboo Magistrate between 1909 and 1925. Records in each file may include information and complaint forms, depositions, warrants, statements of witnesses and accused and other material relating to the case.

Most of the files are for criminal cases and cover the following offences: theft, assault, forgery, burglary, carnal knowledge, fighting and bestiality.

The series consists of indexes and bills of sale from the Quesnel County Court. The records were created between 1915 and 1925 and include bills of sale, agreements, liens relating to livestock, conditional sales, and Land Settlement Board soldier settlements.

The series consists of three volumes of indexes. The “FROM” volume is arranged alphabetically by seller’s name and the “TO” volume is arranged alphabetically by purchaser’s namer. The third volume is a complete register with both seller and purchaser’s names. This volume includes names, occupations, addresses, and the particulars of purchase. The “TO” and “FROM” volumes include file and page numbers that correspond to the bill of sale records in subsequent folders. The bills of sale are arranged by what the indexes call the “file” number.

The sales were made under subsection 4 of section 2 of the “Sale of Goods Act Amendment” (SBC 1916, c. 56) which states “The office for filing shall be the office of the Registrar of the County Court holden in or nearest to the place where delivery of the chattels is made or required to be made.”

The series consists of cause books created by the County Court of Quesnel between 1954 and 1977. All volumes include loose indexes in the front of the ledgers. One volume also includes criminal court cause books.
