- 1894
Part of William Bolton fonds
The series consists of 77 b&w prints of photographs taken by Thomas Burroughes Norgate in July and August, 1894 while on the Vancouver Island Exploring Expedition, sponsored by the Province Newspaper and led by Willam Bolton.
The photographs are in two runs: the first 48 are prints and numbered on the back from 3 to 95. They are listed in
MS-2777, vol. 4, with missing numbers are crossed out in the list as being "N.G" or no good. Most of the photographs have captions written on the back in pencil and are dated in conjunction with Bolton's journal.
The second run consists of 27 prints mounted on card, numbered from 1 to 87, again with gaps noted as N.G. in the list of photographs. They have identifications or captions hand written on the front of the card.
The photographs were taken by Norgate at Alert Bay, Fort Rupert, Coal Harbour, Nimpkish River, Kla-anch River, Woss Lake, Clayoquot, Alberni and other places the expedition encountered en route. Many of the photographs show Indigenous people as well as the landscapes and waterways the team traversed.
