Journal

Journal describes the expedition from Fort Vancouver down the Willamette Valley to the Umpqua River. It also contains the records of trades and interactions with the First Nations tribes. Work identifies most of the First Nations tribes as Indians but also includes the Yamel Indians, Faladin Indians, and Umpqua Indians.

Notebook contains a few entries from Work describing cargo and supplies.

Journal

Journal contains Work's expedition aboard the steamer The Llama from Fort Vancouver to the northwest coast of British Columbia under command of Captain McNeil. It also contains descriptions of trading and the interacting with First Nations tribes in places like Port Mcloughlin, Vancouver Island, and the Queen Charlotte Islands.

Correspondence outward

The series consists of a partial letterbook of outward correspondence kept by Archibald McDonald while stationed at Fort Colvile in 1834 as Chief Trader. The first 9 pages contains copies of letters, then there is a 14 page narrative or report by McDonald regarding the Colvile district.

The book also contains a 28 page handwritten partial copy of D.W. Harmon's journal from 1800, copyist and reason unknown.

Journal

Journal contains the continuation of the expedition on the steamer the Llama under the command of Captain McNeil around the Northwest coast of British Columbia. It describes how the expedition went around Vancouver Island and the Queen Charlotte Islands and eventually returned to Fort Vancouver. The journal mentions many interactions and trades with First Nations tribes that Work identifies as Nass Indians, Cape Fox Indians, Stickeen Indians, Chimsian Indians.

Miscellaneous documents relating to Ogden estate

The file consists of a variety of documentation relating to the settlement of Peter Skene Ogden's estate. The records date from 1835 to approximately 1860 and consist of records relating to land holdings, a draft deed of donation, and copies of letters between Sir George Simpson and various members of the Ogden family, including Ogden's son-in-law, Archibald McKinlay. Much of the correspondence deals with the disbursement of Ogden's estate to his heirs. The draft deed of donation that is included in the file is most likely the one referred to in the letter housed in file E/A/Og2

Register of Baptism at Fort Vancouver, River Columbia, Northwest Coast of America

The file is a photostat copy of a pre-printed British register of baptisms, used to record baptisms at Fort Vancouver, 1836-1838 and Fort Victoria, 1849-1859. The volume is 41 pages, pages 1-16 record baptisms at Fort Vancouver and pages 17-41 record baptisms at Fort Victoria.

The information collected in the register includes the date of baptism, the name of the child, parent's names, abode, quality, trade or profession and by whom the ceremony was performed.

Tariff and outfit inventory relating to Chilcotin Post

The file consists of two four page dockets. The first is titled "Tariff for Chilcotin" and is dated November 1, 1836. It contains a tariff of trading prices for Chilcotin Post. The second docket consists of a list of invoices of Hudson Bay Company goods delivered to James McIntosh at Chilcotin Post, including trading goods, medicines, stationary and stores. This outfit inventory is dated November 2, 1836 and is signed by Alexander Fisher at Fort Alexandria.

File contains loose pages from a ledger book listing inventories of property and goods held by Hudson's Bay Company in the New Caledonia district. The lists also include unsaleable articles, country made articles, country produce, new stores, horse appointments, articles in use, stationary, medicines, provisions, and live stock. The first six pages pertain to March 1836 and the last two pages list articles in use for February 1837.

Register of Marriages at Fort Vancouver, River Columbia, Northwest Coast of of America and at Victoria, Vancouver's Island

The file is a handwritten transcript copy of a register of marriages which duplicates the previous register, except that it has a few more entries. It records marriages at Fort Vancouver and the Columbia River, 1837-1838 and 1848-1849 and Fort Victoria, 1849-1859. It also contains marriages recorded at Fort Langley in 1851. The transcript contains 63 numbered entries, and whether the marriage was authorized by banns or license.

The information collected in the register includes the register number, place and date of marriage, names of the parties being married, the name of the person solemnizing the marriage and the names of witness.

Fort Vancouver : register of marriage licenses

The item consists of a record book kept by Chief Factor John McLoughlin in 1837 at Fort Vancouver for the purposes of recording marriage licences. Entry no. 1 records the marriage licence of James Douglas and Amelia Connolly, dated February 27, 1837. Entry no. 2 records the marriage licence of Benjamin McKenzie and Katharine Campbell, dated February 27, 1837.

The file is a photostat copy of a pre-printed British register of burials, used to record burials at Fort Vancouver, 1837-1838 and Fort Victoria or Victoria, 1849-1859. The volume is 11 pages and contains 88 numbered entries. Pages 1-3 record burials at Fort Vancouver and pages 4-11 record burials at Fort Victoria or Victoria.

The information collected in the register includes the register number, name and abode of the person being buried, the date of burial, the age of the deceased and notes about who performed the ceremony.

The file consists of one letter written by William Smith and addressed to Charles Ross at "Fort Vancouver or elsewhere." The letter deals with Ross's bills and finances.

The file consists of two letters written by Charles Ross to his sons, John and Walter and were written in 1837 and 1843.

Horatio Nelson Calder papers

The file consists of various papers relating to Horatio Nelson Calder. These include pieces of envelopes and letters, a promise to pay $885.55 to John McLoughlin, and a form detailing lands being granted to Calder signed at the Oregon Land Office in February 1873.

Calder married Nancy Budd, daughter of the Reverend Henry Budd. It is believed that one of Henry Budd's daughters, also called Nancy, married Michael Wren. Their son, Charles, married Elizabeth Ross, daughter of Charles and Isabella (Mainville) Ross.

Correspondence outward

The series consists of two letterbooks created by Archibald McDonald from April 1838 to August 1841 and from August 1841 to May 1842. The books contain McDonald's correspondence copies to Hudson's Bay Company officials and officers and relates to all aspects of the administration and operation of Fort Colvile.

Miscellaneous papers regarding the Puget Sound Agricultural Company

The file consists of various documents relating to the creation and purpose of the Puget Sound Agricultural Company (PSAC) 1839-1852. The file includes an extract of Committee minutes re the PSAC, a list of shareholders, a letter to John McLoughlin from the directors regarding the formation of the company, miscellaneous correspondence and the memorandum of understanding or prospectus of the company.

Establishment of servants, Columbia District out

The series is a bound journal containing 92 pages, originally created by James Douglas in 1839 when he was stationed at Fort Vancouver. The first ten pages contain lists of "gentlemen and men" associated with various HBC forts and vessels as well as shipping information. Pages 11 to 70 contain Douglas' letterbook copies of correspondence to John McLoughlin and other officials from 1840 to 1841, written while in Fort Tako, Carquines, on board the Barque Columbia, San Francisco and Fort Vancouver. Interspersed with the letters are receipts and lists of men at forts.

Douglas took the journal with him to Victoria and used it as a personal letter book between 1866 and 1867. Pages 71 to 92 contain draft copies of his letters to his family and business associates.

Report from James Douglas to John McLoughlin

The item is a transcript copy of an 18 page report in the form of a letter written by James Douglas on October 1, 1840 on board the HBC steam vessel "Beaver". It is addressed to John McLouglin, Chief Factor of Fort Vancouver.

The report details Douglas' activities from May to September 1840 in his visits to various HBC forts including Fort McLoughlin, Fort Simpson, Fort Stikine; and Sitka where he met and negotiated business with the Russian Governor. The report also outlines Douglas' interactions with Indigenous people, the establishment of Fort Taku (later Fort Durham) and fur trade activities.
