The series consists of an indexed letterpress book kept by the Registrar of the Nanaimo Courts, 1911-1916. It mostly contains answers to routine inquiries and covering letters. Many letters are unreadable.

Nanaimo County Court firm index book and individual index book

Firm index book (vol. 1) and individual index book (vol. 2) with registrations #743-1554. The entries give the registration number, the name of the firm, the names of persons composing the firm and the date of the declaration. There are annotations of dissolution date in red ink.

Provincial prison reports

The series consists of ten reports sent to Frederick Hussey in 1905 and 1911, in his capacity as Superintendent of Provincial Police and Inspector of Gaols. The wardens at each of the Provincial Gaols at Victoria, New Westminster, Nanaimo, Nelson and Kamloops returned an annual summary of the activity of the gaol with attached monthly reports and annual returns of the prisoners received. The reports include: lists of staff and salaries; financial expenditures, prisoner work statistics and number of prisoners in custody including the name, age, country of origin, profession, crime, sentence and conduct of each.

Dept. of Agriculture lantern slides and negatives

The series consists of 214 photographs, mostly glass lantern slides and glass negatives, created or collected by the Dept. of Agriculture sometime between 1900 and 1915.

The lantern slides contain images of fruit trees, orchards, farms, packing boxes, greenhouses, crops and other agricultural activity. A few have descriptive labels which indicate that they were taken in Victoria, Kelowna, Nanaimo and Summerland, and some have photographers identified (D.J. Dwyer, J. Howard A. Chapman and Edgar Fleming). These photographs may have been used for a variety of purposes including public lectures and as illustrations for reports. Some of the slides have been hand coloured. These slides are from accession 198012-018.

The glass negatives from this accession consist of two files. The first file contains 13 negatives identified as being from Atkinson's mushrooms; images of mushrooms and fungi from book on same and appear to have been photographed directly from George F. Atkinson's 1901 books called "Studies of American Fungi". The second file consists of 24 negatives identified as Morris Middleton pruning lecture. Middleton was an assistant horticulturalist for the Dept. of Agriculture and gave pruning workshops and lectures.

The 27 glass negatives from accession 198410-027 show farms and farm buildings, fruit and berry growing as well as fruit packing and pruning classes in Creston, B.C. in 1914 (F.B. Turner photographer) and photos of apple growing medals presented to the Government of British Columbia in 1909.

The series consists of three volumes of alphabetical indexes to records created by the Nanaimo County Court between 1974 and 1990. The indexes are arranged alphabetically by the surname of the plaintiff. The index lists the plaintiff, the defendant and the file number. This number corresponds to case numbers in the plaint and procedure books (GR-2129) and case cards (GR-3613).

Nanaimo Supreme Court family orders and reasons for judgement

The series consists of orders and reasons for judgement concerning family law cases heard in the Nanaimo Supreme Court between 1984 and 1997. The records are arranged by case file number and are in roughly chronological order. Orders are the formal expression of the ruling of the court, whereas reasons for judgement provide the explanation for the order. Reasons for judgement are given at the conclusion of a court hearing. Family law records include those relating to divorces, child custody, and family maintenance.

The records are covered by secondary 51450-25 of the Court Services Operational Records Classification Schedule (schedule 100152).

The fonds consists of the wastebook [accounts book] of Fort Nanaimo, 1854-1861,reflecting the various activities of the HBC in the Nanaimo area. It also includes a transcript copy of Fort Nanaimo correspondence between Joseph W. McKay and James Dougas, 1852 to 1853, and a transcript copy of the Fort Nanaimo journal, 1855 to 1857.

Nanaimo New Democratic Riding Association fonds

The fonds consists of videotapes of New Democratic Party events, mainly in Nanaimo. It includes speeches by Tommy Douglas (as well as a 1976 tribute to Tommy and Irma Douglas), Dave Barrett (including a 1976 convention speech), Les Benjamin and David Stupich.

Additional NDP events are documented on 1/2-inch open reel videotapes, including a dinner speech by Dave Barrett during the 1975 election campaign, and speeches by David Stupich and Tommy Douglas. If these reels are intact, they will have to be digitized before their content can be made accessible.

John Munro fonds

The fonds consists of personal and professional records of John Munro and document parts of his career with the British Columbia Provincial Police and his time as a jail warden. The records are comprised of 22 b&w family photographs (1909-1947), one patrol journal (1906-1907), and one scrapbook (1903-1917).

Munro was appointed to the British Columbia Provincial Police in 1902 in Vancouver, and was appointed Warden of the Nanaimo Gaol in 1910 and of the Saanich Prison Farm in 1914. He served as Constable at Colquitz in 1918. The patrol journal was kept while he travelled into the Cassiar District in search of Simon Gun-a-noot, who had been accused of murdering two white men. The journal was created partly as he carried out his professional duties, and partly for his own interest.

The scrapbook contains newspaper clippings and ephemera of famous cases or prisoners in his charge.

The 22 family photographs primarily show Munro and his wife and children on the grounds of the Saanich Prison Farm (now Wilkinson Road Jail). The photographs have been assigned the following numbers: J-00107; J-00108; J-00109; J-00110; J-00111; J-00112; J-00113; J-00114; J-00115; J-00116; J-00117; J-00118; J-00119; J-01028; J-01029; J-01030; J-01031; J-01032; J-01033; J-01034; J-01035; and J-01036.
