This series contains records pertaining to school properties, school sites, and school district boundaries. Vol. 1: Index to Deeds of School Sites, 1886-1948 (provides name of school, date when school district established, legal description of site, and name of vendor of property); Vols. II and III: Index to B.C. Gazette notices defining rural and assisted school districts, 1921-1945; Vol. IV: Alphabetical Register of Rural and Assisted Schools, 1921-1944 [showing dates of establishment, boundary and name changes, etc.]. The series also includes files containing miscellaneous contracts and fire insurance policies, 1914-1934. Vol. I may be used in conjunction with GR-1440, Lands Branch correspondence, File 2655/07.

The fonds consists of letters describing life at the Prince of Wales Fairbridge Farm School.

This series contains directories of school inspectorates, showing names of school inspectors, names of schools and number of teachers within inspectorates. Directories also list schools closed in various school districts. This series may be used in conjunction with GR-0456 (School inspectors' reports, 1940-1946).

This series contains a typescript of speech given to the British Columbia Library Association convention by Minister of Education, Dr. G.M. Weir on 13 May 1946. Weir's speech, given in Nanaimo, provided a general review of the government's educational policies and priorities.

"The Peace River Educational Administrative Unit" - report prepared by School Inspector J.F.K. English (Pouce Coupe, B.C., February 1942). The Peace River Administrative Unit was first created in 1934, through the consolidation of over sixty separate school districts. Initially known as the Peace River Rural School District, the Peace River Educational Administrative Area was formally established 1937. In 1939, Dr. English succeeded A.S. Towell as Director of Education for the Administrative Unit. This report, which was distributed to school administrators throughout Canada, includes tables, maps, and bibliographic notes.

A copy of this 47 pp. typescript by Elizabeth Berry Lightfoot and Margaret Maynard will also be found in GR-1030.

Letterbook containing correspondence outward from Board of Examiners, March 1917 to July 1919 (on reel B11360); further correspondence outward dealing with, appointment of examiners and staging and marking of 1939 examinations; also includes miscellaneous minutes of meetings of the Board of Examiners and province-wide exam results for 1939 Senior Matriculation and Grade 12 (on reel B16599).

The series consists of records created by the Dept. of Education in 1939. It includes correspondence, inward and outward, of all branches and formed the department's Central Registry. Records include correspondence re text books, curricula, appointments, and special education programs. School inspectors' reports and files re individual rural schools also included. The series also includes eight maps and plans and one photograph of the gymnasium of Brooks School at Powell River under construction.

"Peace River School Directory, May-June 1934." A bound, typescript volume compiled by School Inspector William Plenderleith. It was compiled to assist J.L. Watson, Department of Education Registrar, in making appointments to schools in the Peace River Educational Administrative Area. The volume includes photographs and descriptions of sixty-four schools, with notes and general comments on settlers and the countryside in the various school districts. Plenderleith also provided information on boarding facilities for teachers and suggestions as to the most suitable type of teachers for individual schools. Several of the photographs feature pupils and interior views of the mainly rural, one-room schools.

The fonds consists of records of the Sandon School District. Records include school trustee correspondence and copies of school inspectors' reports.

This series consists of official orders and correspondence inward from the Superintendent of Education, primarily regarding acquisition, disposal of school lands and staff appointments; record of business conducted by the Council, Oct. 16, 1928 to Oct. 24, 1929; and minutes of Council meetings, June 17 to Aug. 3, 1929.

This series consists of correspondence, circulars, and other records from the Director of Elementary Agricultural Education (J.W. Gibson). Records include correspondence regarding Gibsons' appointment, home and school gardens, and students' wartime agricultural work. Also included are minutes of meetings of Provincial Committee on Food Production, Conservation and Control; correspondence regarding Returned Soldiers' Aid Commission (1915-1916); and register of summer school pupils (1914-1923). There are also circulars describing soil conditions, landscaping, and general appearance of school grounds in primarily rural schools, 1915. Scale drawings on circulars show school buildings, outbuildings, wells, paths, position of trees, rocks, flagpoles etc. on school playgrounds.

This series contains correspondence inward to J.W. Gibson, Director of Elementary Agricultural Education. The series includes reports on "Caring for School Gardens" [1913] and notes on correlation of rural science with manual training. It also includes "Remittance Forms" from "Patriotism and Production School Campaign" [1917], a patriotic fund-raising exercise held in schools to assist the war effort. The forms give the name of schools, teachers, and a description of projects undertaken by pupils. There are over one hundred (mainly) rural schools represented. This series may be used in conjunction with GR-0458 and GR-1446 (Elementary Education correspondence, 1915-1929).

The series consists of correspondence between the director of Elementary Agricultural Education (J.W. Gibson) and school boards throughout the province, created between 1915 and 1929. The correspondence is mainly concerned with gardens in local elementary schools and includes detailed reports on the types of gardens being cultivated at various schools. Some reports also include plans and drawings of gardens.

The files are arranged alphabetically by name of community and chronologically by year.

This series contains correspondence inward and outward of the Director of Elementary Education and the organizer of Technical Education. Files include correspondence and reports regarding summer schools and night schools, manual training and domestic science, agricultural education and wartime Food Conservation Committee. The series also contains miscellaneous reports from school inspectors and correspondence regarding provincial university and college programmes. This collection may be used in conjunction with GR-0457 (Technical Education, 1915-1923) and GR-0458 (Elementary Agricultural Education, 1915-1929). This collection includes: correspondence (inward and outward) of J. W. Gibson, the Director of Elementary Agricultural Education Branch and John Kyle, the Organizer of Technical Education; the records of George H. Deane, the Supervisor of Technical Education; correspondence and reports pertaining to summer school and night school programs, manual training and domestic science, agriculture education and wartime food supply; miscellaneous reports from school inspectors; and correspondence concerning university and college courses. During this period, the Organizer of Technical Education (John Kyle) was responsible for night schools, domestic science courses, and manual training programs. The Director of the Elementary Agricultural Education Branch (J.W.Â\~Gibson) was responsible for rural science courses, schools gardening projects and acted as director of the Summer School for Teachers. Gibson was also the Provincial Organizer for the Wartime Food Conservation Committee. Both John Kyle and J.W. Gibson reported to George H. Deane, the Assistant Superintendent of Education as well as the Supervisor of Technical Education (19131917). Deane also acted as Inspector of Schools on Vancouver Island, and this collection includes correspondence relating to school inspection and to matters other than technical and agricultural education.

The fonds consists of records created by the Yale School District as required by the Public Schools Act. The records include a minute book of the Board of School Trustees (1887-1929), which also includes correspondence and accounts.

This series is comprised of School District Information forms distributed by the Teachers Bureau to rural school teachers in 1923 and 1928 to be filled out and returned to the Bureau. The forms are questionnaires for the purpose of obtaining information about teachers’ living conditions in rural school districts. There is no record of similar forms being sent in other years.

Not every rural and assisted school is represented in this collection. Of the 684 rural and assisted schools in BC for the year ending June 1923, there are forms for 651. For the year ending June 1928, there are forms for 711 of the 728 schools.

School Trustees' minute book and accounts.

The series consists of records created by the Dept. of Education between 1915 and 1924. The records include teachers' "Reports on Instruction Given in Rural Science," submitted to J.W. Gibson, director of Elementary Agricultural Instruction. The reports show name of teacher, teacher's length of service at the school, qualifications in rural science, and previous experience with school gardening. The reports also contain information re: syllabuses, textbooks, equipment, etc., as well as monthly calendars of gardening activities of various schools.

The reports are filed alphabetically by teachers' names. Researchers should consult the Public Schools Reports for these years to determine the names of teachers at particular schools.

This series consists of correspondence of the Organizer of Technical Education. This officer dealt with night school, summer school, domestic science and manual training, in addition to technical education. The letterbooks of correspondence outward include the Director of Elementary Agricultural Education.

The fonds consists of records of the Sooke School District. Records include trustee minute books (1886-1910) and letterbook and accounts books (1893-1916).

GR-0450 consists of letterbook copies of correspondence outward from Superintendents John Jessop (1872-1878), C.C. McKenzie (1878-1884), S.D. Pope (1884-1899), Alexander Robinson (1899-1919) and S.J. Willis (1919-1946). The letterbooks document the multifarious duties of the Superintendents of Education, who were responsible for the administration and overall management of the provincial public school system. The first seven years of correspondence may have been written in the Superintendent's capacity as Chairman of the Board of Education.

Due to its artifactual value, only volume 1 was retained after microfilming.

Indexes to correspondence outward are included in this unit. However, the indexes have certain characteristics and idiosyncracies which researchers should note before consulting the records. No index exists to correspondence outward for 1872 and most of 1873. Correspondence outward for the period December 1873 - March 1881 is indexed in the letterbooks for those years (vols. 2-5). Another overlapping index for the period 1878-1881 will be found in vols. 192 and 193.

A more comprehensive system of indexing commenced in April 1881 and continued on through December 1905. Correspondence outward for this period was indexed in separately bound volumes (vols. 194-207). In 1906 the bound volumes were replaced by boxed index cards. GR-0450 includes index cards up to and including 1915. Regrettably, cards for the years 1916-1919 have not survived and, as a result, vols. 148-191 are not indexed.

Researchers should also be aware of the indexing methods used in the Education Office over time:

1. Correspondence outward, Pre-1901 (Vols. 2-5; 192-205)
   Correspondence outward, 1873-1900, was indexed alphabetically, by name of recipient. For example: correspondence concerning a school would be addressed to the secretary of the local board of school trustees; it was then indexed under the name of the secretary, not under the name of the school or school district. Researchers will need to know the names of school board secretaries in order to search the indexes for documents pertaining to a particular school. The best way of identifying these officials is to consult the Annual Reports of the Public Schools. In the appendices of the Reports researchers will find an alphabetical list of public schools, showing the names of local school trustees and indicating which of the trustees had been designated secretary.

2. Correspondence outward, 1901-1913 (Index vols. 206-207; Index card boxes 208-212)
   Beginning January 1901, correspondence outward was indexed alphabetically, by name of school or school district. Between 1906 and 1913 special index headings were reserved for correspondence with the Department of Public Works (re: the construction and maintenance of school buildings) and with provincial School Inspectors.

3. Correspondence outward, 1914-1915 (Card Index Boxes 213-216)
   Outgoing correspondence was divided into four broad categories: General, Cities, Municipalities, and Rurals. Within each category, correspondence was indexed alphabetically. "General" correspondence includes routing circulars, acknowledgements of petitions for schools, replies to applications for teaching appointments, etc. In the "General" category special index headings were also reserved for correspondence relating to school gardens (Agriculture), school law (Attorney-General), Cadet Corps, Finance, the Free Text-Book Branch, Provincial Normal Schools, Public Works Depts., School Inspectors, Technical Education and U.B.C. Under "Cities" will be found correspondence relating to Graded City Schools; under "Municipalities," correspondence pertaining to Rural Municipality Schools. "Rurals" describes correspondence concerning the small Rural and Assisted Schools in the province.

To determine the status of a particular school i.e. whether it was classified as a graded city school, a municipal school, etc., consult the published Annual Reports of the Public Schools.

This series contains records from the Provincial Normal School (Vancouver). The records include a letterbook, consisting of correspondence from William Burns, principal, to Alexander Robinson, Superintendent of Education.

The fonds consists of records of the South Saanich School District. It also includes records created by schools in the East-South Saanich School District. The fonds includes a visitor's book (1876-1884) and attendance registers for South Saanich School (1878-1881, 1884-1886, and 1888-1897). It also includes attendance registers for East-South Saanich School (1882-1884). Some of the registers include the courses taken by the students.

Consists of correspondence inward to Superintendents John Jessop (1872-1878), C.C. McKenzie (1878-1884), and S.D. Pope (1884-1899). Types of records include petitions for school buildings, applications for teaching posts, minutes of local school boards, school trustees' reports, etc. This series may be used in conjunction with GR-0449 (Superintendent of Education, Indexes to Correspondence Inward, 1881-1915) and GR-0450 (Superintendent of Education, Correspondence Outward, 1872-1919).

Researchers should also be aware of the Correspondence Inward files of the Provincial Secretary, 1871-1892 (GR-0526). Since the Provincial Secretary was responsible for the Education Department, these files contain many records pertaining to teachers, schools, and education matters in general. Access to documents in GR-0526 is through GR-0524 (Provincial Secretary. Registers and indexes of letters inward, 1872-1924). Documents pertaining to education, etc. are indexed under the headings "SCHOOLS", and "EDUCATION, SUPERINTENDENT".

The fonds consists of records of the Cadboro Bay School District. Records include the visitors' book maintained by Cadboro Bay School (1885-1894).

This series includes a suggested draft for the 1872 Public Schools Act by Thomas Nicholson (1871), correspondence regarding the school at Burton's Prairie (1882) and correspondence regarding a request for an additional teacher at New Westminster High School (1889).

The series consists of a register of teachers' certificates and examinations from 1880 to 1888. It states the type of certificate granted, course taken and marks obtained. There is an index on the inside front cover.

This series contains a bound volume of minutes of meetings of the Victoria School Board, along with receipts of payments made by the Board. The series includes minutes of meetings of school board electors (showing votes cast by individual electors for particular candidates) and contains copies of provincial government circulars relating to education and copies of schools-related bills, by-laws, rules and regulations.
