[Canton, China] 35) Peep from one of the bastions along the Walls between West Gate and Magazine Hill, at Chinese Village with a piece of the Walls and May [Maj? Mag?.] Hill in the distance.

[Canton, China] 33) One of the inner Courts of Comr. Yamun. The officers on the steps are French, remark the wood supports to roof.

[Canton, China] 30) Gate in 5 Genii.

[Canton, China] 19 & 29 Entrance to the celebrated Pagoda of the 5 Genii. Inside this place is an immense bell which has never been struck by Chinese hands. Report and traditions said that when this bell sounded Canton would fall, and oddly a splinter of a shell has chipped a large piece out of it so tradition was true. On this ground inside and railed off is shewn the spot where the head [Joss?] stamped his two feet into the solid rock when he took his leap into heaven, this is religiously preserved intact.

[Canton, China] 17 and 18. Gates of a Joss house close by the south wall of the City and from the top of it - this place was occupied by the 65th B.N.I. when they first arrived

[Canton, China] 15) West gates from outside the Wall, the attack of the Chinese was from the front on the cut work. View from Comg. Officers Quarters West Gate, taking in part of suburbs and inside ramp of wall, at the first projection the Chinese escaladed with 50 bamboo ladders. There was a small house where the top part of wall is broken down, on the remains of them were found some dead Chinese and the ladders were covered with blood two Hows. [Howitzers?] played on them at this point.

The Pier of the new landing place from the telegraph station, examine the curious Sanpan (boats) all anchored to pieces of bamboo stuck in the mud the long paddles sticking out behind the Sanpans are oars used in sculling the principle mode of progression here. I've sees as many as 15 or 20 men in one big scull.

[Canton, China] 13) Capt. Budd's Quarters and where his company are stationed, this place was turned into a Hospital for the Chinese sick and wounded when we first came in. Afterwards during the last rows into Barracks. The house where all the men are in front is the weighing stand during the races.

[Canton, China] 12. View in the celebrated Honam Temple taking in an old tree and the usual accompants. of Chinese blackguards, the Offr. at the foot of the tree is Capt. Budd R.M. L. I. My servant Hugh is to be seen standing on the right talking to the mob and exhorting them to look straight to their front, the coolie on the left is saying his prayers for pure funk he thinks it a Joss pigeon.

[Canton, China] 11) Part of Joss House where 47th B.N.I. are quartered, the Chinese Inscription over gate is Sing-Chum-Sein. Sing is a literary joss, Chum his grandfather - Seing means House - look well at the roof and the small recesses on each side of the doorway. The figures are all brightly colored and glazed this Joss house is about as good a one as there is in the city - the black orderly in front I got to sit still by grinning at him

[Canton, China] The house we tiffined in, in the Gardens, the figures are indistinct because they moved however you get their back views in the looking glass behind, examine with a magnifying glass the basket at the foot of the steps on the right and take out a patent for it, it comes in 4 pieces, 1 over the other , confined by the two upright pieces of bamboo wh. form the handle. The two Ghosts on the right are Sepoys whom the Col. threatened to make real Ghosts of for moving ...

[Canton, China] 10) The trunk of a large tree in the Park of Commr. Zamsun [?] - remark how the roots are half way up the trunk. Under this tree the first English man who died in the city is buried - Richard Hincks

Gives part of the house where I stood when I photographed No. 8, near wh. spot are collected a group of Offrs. taking it easy and watching my proceedings - the man standing up, Reevely by name, is the Garrison theatrical genius and flanking him Williams and Crawford of ours, the trellis work in this picture is not bad -

[Canton, China] 8. Gives us another ornamental water and the road leading to the Gardens beyond. The Chinaman peeping from behind the tree close by the bridge, and admire the trees going out from the side of the wall - by walking across the bridge along the road by them, turning sharp round the far corner of Pond and looking back we have No. 9
