Cause book, Oct 1858 - Oct 1861. 1 vol. with plaintiff index.

This series consists of civil cause books from the Supreme Court of Vancouver Island, 1858-1870 and Supreme Court of British Columbia (Victoria), 1870-1882. All volumes are indexed. From 29 October 1866 fees relating to these cases are entered in the mainland fees book.

This series consists of receipt books and miscellaneous land sale records. Records consist largely of receipts for the sale of town lots, suburban and country lands, and unsurveyed rural lands, issued by Assistant Commissioners of Lands and Works for Cariboo District, Lillooet District, Yale District, and New Westminster District. The series also includes land sale records pertaining to Lytton, Seymour, Douglas, Port Moody, Fort Langley, and Similkameen district, and a trading licences receipt book issued by Frank Trevor, Collector at Quesnel.

This series contains two journals documenting Incidents brought before the police court whether by officers or individuals. The journals appear to have been used as account books and each trial listed in the journal also notes arrest fees, fines, bail or other associated costs that needed to be paid to the courts or the plaintiff. Journals list the following information arranged in columns: date, names of people involved in the incident, the crime, the sentence and/or amount of the fine (s) or other fees, followed by a sum of total costs to collect.

This series consists of a variety of records created by Government Agents and other government officials stationed in the Lytton, Yale and Kamloops area from 1858-1949. The records include registrations of water rights (mostly for mining purposes); placer mining forms; mining record books recording mineral claims, placer claims, leases, records of abandonment and bills of sale; and an unlabeled cash book covering Cache Creek, Bonaparte, Okanagan, Tranquille, Dead Man’s Creek, Savona Ferry, Kamloops, and Nicola which records office expenditures and collectorates such as school taxes, property taxes, leases, road tolls, court fees, water records, licences, etc.

This series consists of records related to the postal service operated in the colony of British Columbia, from 1858-1871. The records were created at post offices around BC, including Fort Yale, Lillooet, Hope, Lytton, William Creek, as well as the Postmaster General office in New Westminster. There is also one book from the Victoria post office.

Most records document the movement of mail between the Cariboo district and New Westminster along the Fraser River. Most of the volumes record the arrival, departure and destination of letters or parcels. There are also various financial account books tracking sale the of stamps and expenses. The records are arranged chronologically.

This series consists of assorted correspondence in and correspondence out from the Colonial Secretary or are related to the general administration of the colonial government with no known creator. The records date from approximately 1858 to early 1871. The majority of the records were created or received by the Colonial Secretary of the Colony of British Columbia, but the series also includes a few records of the Colonial Secretary of the Colony of Vancouver Island.

The majority of the records are correspondence and memoranda with other government officials such as the Attorney General, Court Registrar, Audit Office and Lands and Works Department. Records regard subjects such as: pre-emptions, court procedures, the expected influx of miners from San Francisco, and expenditures.

This series consists of records relating to the Colony of British Columbia Treasury. Records include letterbook correspondence of the Acting Colonial Secretary with the Treasurer (1859); record of claims for allowance of civil and military officers (1861-1868); and an account of expenditures (1870-1871).

This series consists of the records of the Assistant Commissioner of Lands and Works, Yale District, 1859-1886. Records include five volumes of pre-emption records. Volume 1, nos. 1-392 (1859-1872); Volume 2, nos. 275-312 and 1-24 (1870-1871); Volume 3, nos. 25-279 (1871-1884); Volume 4, certificates of record of unsurveyed land, nos. 250-294 (1874-1885); Volume 5, certificates of record of unsurveyed land, nos. 292-295 (1883-1886). Volumes 1 and 4 have nominal indexes.

Financial records from Victoria's Supreme Court of Civil Justice. There is a receipt book, 1859-1964 recording payments made by Registrar Thomas G. William to suitors. The date, the number of the plaint, the "Full amount of judgment and costs" and/or the amount of cash received [pounds, shillings, pence] and the signature of the suitor receiving the money. In 1862 the format and handwriting changes. Registrar's account book, 1866-1970 showing daily entries of sheriff fees and court fees (in dollars and cents). A booklet of "Fees collected during the Circuit of 1870, 21 June to 26 August" marked Duplicate.

Custom House Returns. The records In this volume include: lists of articles (quantity and value) imported to British Columbia from Vancouver Island, the United States and the United Kingdom; lists of articles exported from British Columbia; shipping returns from the port of New Westminster; road tolls from Yale, Douglas and Hope; and an annual summary of customs receipts (from duties, harbour dues, head money, tonnage dues, warehouse fees, inland navigation licenses, fines, and tolls at south boundary).

This series contains acknowledgements of moneys received by the Lands Department pursuant to the pre-emption or sale of crown land. These certificates of purchase include district, legal description of land, acreage, date and terms of payment, name of payer, pre-emption record number, certificate of improvement number, crown grant number and departmental file numbers. The certificates are divided into four series.

Correspondence of the Gold Commissioner and later, Government Agent, at Yale: Letterbooks of outgoing letters, 1859-1909; incoming letters, 1880-1909.

This series consists of the records of the Victoria Gaol, 1859-1914. The 107 volumes include lists of prisoners, descriptions of prisoners, sentence books, work records, charge books, employment registers, registers of clothing issued, reports of prisoners' conduct, punishment books, gaolers' reports, duty rosters and daily diaries, ration books, food account books, stores and provisions account books, financial records, doctors' record books, medical order books, receipts and 1875 correspondence from the Superintendent of Police.

Records have been grouped by subject matter, then arranged chronologically when possible. The groupings are as follows: Volumes 1 to 6, Lists of prisoners in Victoria gaol; Volumes 7 to 13, Description lists; Volumes 14 to 17, Sentence books; Volumes 18 to 22, Work records; Volumes 23 to 35, Charge books; Volumes 36 to 40, Prisoners conduct records; Volumes 41 to 107, Gaolers' records.

This series consists of a Comiaken Land District land register for Range 1, Section 1 to Range 3, Section 19 on Vancouver Island. The volume date 1859-1885.

The register is arranged numerically by Range and Section and records the alienation of land from the Crown (by purchase, pre-emption, etc.). Information may include the name of the purchaser, dates and numbers of certificates issued (including Crown Grants), dates and amounts of payments and reference numbers to correspondence and field books. The volume includes an alphabetical name index.

This series consists of papers, mainly draft bills, regarding mining, 1859-1871. Records created before 1871 were created in the office of the Attorney-General of the Colony of British Columbia, and possibly the Attorney-General of the Colony of Vancouver Island, if the records relate to Vancouver Island and were created before 1866 when the two colonies merged. Records created in 1871 were created by the Attorney-General for the Province of British Columbia.

This series contains drafts of bills, ordinances, and regulations.

Receipts and expenditures, 1859-1871 (4 vols.). Vol. 1 includes Magistrate's Court charge and sentence book, 1859 - May 1860 or 1861; vol. 3 includes Small Debts Court, Lillooet plaint book, 1895-1914.

This series consists of cash books likely used by the Colony and Province of BC treasury from 1859-1894. Cash books list receipts and payments in date order and are used to determine total assets at any given time. Information is entered under the following headings: date of receipt or payment, number of voucher; name of the person or department making or receiving the payment; reason for payment or receipt; amount received or paid; the heading under which the entry was recorded in the related waste book; and the waste book page number.

This series consists of letterbooks of Treasury Department correspondence outward.

Naturalization records, 1859-1963. Vol. 1 also includes the 1862 Constitution of the Congregation Emanuel of Victoria, V.I. with signatories and lists of Victoria firefighters, 1861-1862.

The series consists of photographs of engineering projects managed by the Dept. of Public Works. The photographs consist of glass lantern slides, some numbered. The views photographed include bridges, road works, buildings and general views and may have been taken between 1859 and 1930. Many of the slides are credited to J. Howard A. Chapman, a well known photographer based in Victoria between 1895 and 1936.

The series consists of naturalization applications and oaths of allegiance issued by the Victoria County Court between 1859 and 1917; 1926. They are arranged numerically by file number from 1 to 4118 and include oaths of allegiance from 1859 to 1865 and applications and oaths from 1871 to 1917; 1926. The files may also include oath of residence and certificates of naturalization.

The series consists of pre-emption records created by the Lands Branch and its predecessor bodies between 1859 and 1971. The Chief Commissioner of Lands was responsible for the administration of Crown lands under successive governments (Colony of Vancouver Island, Colony of British Columbia, Province of British Columbia) until 1911. In 1929 the Minister delegated authority for Crown lands to the Lands Branch, headed by the Superintendent of Lands.

The series includes 216 volumes of certificates of pre-emption and 33 volumes of pre-emption registers. Some volumes contain certificates of Improvement and certificates of purchase.

Most of the volumes of certificates are arranged by district and then numerically by pre-emption number although there are many cases where individual documents from files are spread out throughout an entire volume. There are also some pre-emption numbers that are missing from volumes. One or more volumes cover the pre-emption registrations for each land district, and volumes 86-90 and 246-248 relate to railway lands on Vancouver Island, particularly in Cowichan and Nanaimo Districts (1884-1887). Pre-emptions were generally numbered sequentially based on the Land Act enforced at the time. Sequences can be found in the collection based on the Land Acts of 1860, 1870, 1874, 1875 and 1884. The New Westminster land district also includes a sequence based on rural or country land pre-emptions. Some land districts maintained the same numbering sequence throughout the entire time period. If no date is mentioned in the description, the sequence is based on the 1884 Act.

The pre-emption registers (volumes 213-245; microfilm reels B13858-B13860) summarize the information from the certificates. Each volume covers the pre-emption registrations for a district. The pre-emption registers are arranged in Lands Branch volume number order, volumes 1-27 (including three a volumes where two volumes are required for a district), followed by three unnumbered volumes that cover Fort St. John and Victoria. Each register lists pre-emptions in registration number order, with an alphabetical index of pre-emptors' names at the back. The following information is recorded: registration number, date of registration, pre-emptors name, lot number (not always recorded), acreage (for ca. 1915 on), certificate of improvement number (if issued), file number (sometimes), and remarks (either a code number, possibly accompanied by a date, or a phrase: cancelled, abandoned, or no application or declaration received). This information is hand-written in columns with printed headings.

This series consists of cash books used by the Colony of Vancouver Island treasury from 1859-1866. Cash books list receipts and payments in date order and are used to determine total assets at any given time. transactions are divided into receipts (debits) and payments (credits). Information is entered under the following headings: date of receipt or payment, number of voucher; from who received; name of the person or department making or receiving the payment; description of the receipt item or service; amount received or paid; and the waste book page number.

This series consists of financial journals used by the Colony of Vancouver Island treasury from 1859-1864. Journals are a type of financial record used in double entry book keeping to separate transactions into debits or credits. They are an intermediary record used to reorganize the chronological entries in rough day books or waste books into specific accounts, before they are ultimately copied into a ledger book. Information is entered under the following headings: amount, associated ledger folio number, associated waste book page, date, a description of the transaction, and if the transaction was a debit or credit. The end of each year includes a sheet summarizing the balances for various accounts.

This series consists of a variety of records related to the work of the Colony of British Columbia Legislative Council, the Legislative Assembly and Governor James Douglas from 1859-1871. Records include correspondence, minutes, committee records, and copies of proclamations, ordinances, Acts and bills. This includes a written protest from members of the Legislative Council regarding confederation with Canada (1869) and a copy of the British order-in-council to provide for a Legislative Council for the Colony of British Columbia (22 Vict., 11 June 1863). There is also a file of records sent to Governor Musgrave regarding confederation with Canada, discussing the resulting impacts on the BC civil service.

This series consists of an index to correspondence, indexed by the subject of the letter. The index was created for correspondence written between 1859 and 1861 by the Colony of BC Treasury Department. The index lists the date of commencement of correspondence, date of termination of correspondence, the subject, remarks, and the number(s) assigned to the letters outward written by Treasury staff.
