Index to applications to pre-emption

Series consists of an index to pre-emptions. This is a register and alphabetical index to pre-emptions dated from 1871-1884. Pre- emptions are dated from 1-1599. The index includes a record no. and date of completion field providing evidence of whether or not a certificate of improvement was issued.

Certificate of improvement register

Series consists of a register of certificates of improvement. Register records numbers 1220-1520. Register fields include date, record number, name of applicant, location of pre-emption claim, district, amount of acres, amount paid, and any notes. Notes may include a note stating the transaction was cancelled or Dept. of Lands correspondence numbers relating the land transaction.

War leave pre-emptors book

Series consists of a register listing applicants for pre-emptions who are unable to fulfill their responsibilities under the Land Act for pre-empting land due to active service or other duties associated with the 1914-1918 war. Service duties consist primarily of active military service but there are also cases where pre-emptors are offered exceptions to work in munitions factory, work as nurses, or in some cases, to tend to injured family members. The register is arranged by land district.

Mining licences

Series consists of copies of mining licenses issued by gold commissioners. These provide individuals the right to prospect for minerals on Crown land. The licenses are from the Kootenay district, Omineca district, Coast district and Vancouver Island.

Coal and petroleum licences register

Series consists of a register documenting coal and petroleum licences. Data elements include: L.I., date,, no. to whom issued, to date from, location, amount of fee paid, renewed by no., renewal of no., assignments transferred to, L.I. There are four registers in this series including one register specifically for lot 4,593 East Kootenay district.

Petroleum and natural gas applications register

Series consists of a register documenting the name owner of the lease and the amount paid annually to the Crown. Data elements include the lot number, lessee, annual rent, date paid, receipt number, term, interest, total, and remarks. The register also notes whether or not the lease has been cancelled.

Mineral claims index

Series consists of an index to mining claims in the Province. Each index is arranged alphabetically by name of claim and includes the following fields: name of claim, district, mining division, name of grantee, description of property, acreage, Crown grant number, and Crown grant date.

Staff arrival and departure register

Series consists of a staff arrival and departure register documenting the work schedules of junior members of the Dept. of Lands and Works. Data elements include the date, name of staff member, occupation, arrival and departure.

Public works contracts

Series consists of public works contracts from the Dept. of Lands and Works. The contracts are for primarily construction and repairs of bridges and roads on Vancouver Island and the Mainland. There are also contracts relating to the construction so buildings including courthouses, and to other public facilities including wharves, fences, and water supplies. Some of the early documents also include some tender documents relating to the contracts.

General correspondence

Series consists of correspondence of the Chief Commissioner of Lands and Works. Correspondence includes copies of letters inward and outward, copies of reports and maps. Correspondence deals with land issues including pre-emption claims, land-use, Indian lands and land disputes. Correspondence also deals with public works issues such as the Esquimalt Graving Dock or with the administration of the department.

Many of the documents are stamped with a Lands and Works number indicating the year the document was received and the document number in the office (i.e. “423/78 refers to the 423rd document registered in 1878). The Dept. of Lands and Works then grouped together related documents by subject with the subject written on a blue piece of paper that also served as the file folder.

Le Club Canadien-francais : [cable TV series]

The series consists of 22 episodes of the French-language public access cable television program "Le Club Canadien-francais". The program was produced by Victoria Cablevision Ltd. (later Rogers Cable TV Victoria) in conjunction with Le Club Canadien-francais de Victoria, and was telecast from 1977 to 1983. Most of the programs feature "Chez Nous", a sub-series that presented news, music and dance performances, and other information of interest to Victoria's Francophone community. There are also a few special programs, including episodes marking Christmas, Canada Day, and the repatriation of Canada's Constitution, or dealing with French immersion in BC schools.

The finding aid provides a detailed description of each of the 22 programs. The descriptions, in both French and English, includes the program title, credits, broadcast/production dates, content details and cue notes. Each program description is followed by transcript of the program proceedings in French. These descriptions and transcripts were produced by Laurette Agnew of La Societe francophone de Victoria.

Charles Findlater photographs

The series comprises photographs relating to The Elgar Choir and choir director Charles E. Findlater. The photographs and albums record various trips and choir tours across Canada and overseas, circa 1936-1952.

B.C. Council of Girl Guides photographs

This extensive collection was donated by the British Columbia Council of the Girl Guides of Canada. It has been organized and inventoried, and in many cases, housed in acid free materials by the donor. It documents the years 1910s to 1980s. Includes ["correspondence, MSS, scrapbooks, brochures" ?] and photographs (including negative and slides).

John Emerson sound recordings

The series mainly consists of recordings of radio programs and stage productions that John Emerson appeared in or contributed to, and performances by other entertainers that he knew and encouraged professionally. This material includes complete radio programs (usually recorded or copied for Emerson by the broadcasting station), as well as rehearsals, stage performances, and excerpts from broadcasts (recorded on Emerson's home equipment). Emerson's tapes provide a cross-section of the types of performances that he participated in, representing his varied talents, the talents of his colleagues, and the entertainment venues of Vancouver in years 1950-1964. The tapes contain complete or excerpted radio programs (both musical and spoken word); complete or excerpted radio dramas; complete or excerpted recordings of live stage plays, musicals, concerts, nightclub performances, television shows, and other entertainments; and recordings of rehearsals. The decisions regarding excerpting were made by Emerson. In many cases, the action of recording over existing material at a later date caused interruptions in earlier recordings, leaving only excerpts. Notable recordings include: radio musical series such as "Club Date", featuring Helen Young, Juliette, Eleanor Collins at Pat Kirkpatrick with the John Emerson Trio (1950-1955) and "Hotel Downbeat" (1955-1957), both from CBC Vancouver, and "John Emerson/The Man Who Comes to Dinner" (CJOR, 1957-1958); episodes of CBC Vancouver radio plays from the series "Vancouver Theatre", "Point-Counterpoint" and "Don Grey: Marine Investigator" (1954-1957); CBC radio talk and commentary programs including "Emerson Presents" (1955-1959), "Emerson's Digest" (1958), "Emerson's Weekly" (1961),"Best of Emerson" (1962), and "Emerson's Point of View" (1963-1964); CBC television programs such as "The Other Cheek" (1960), "Night Beat" (1961) and "The 7 O'clock Show" (1962-1964); performances recorded at the Arctic Club in Vancouver (1956-1959); and stage productions by Theatre Under the Stars, Totem Theatre, the Vancouver International Festival, and the Vancouver Little Theatre Association.

Interviews about John Emerson

The series (T4352:251 - 263) consists of 13 audio cassettes that accompanied John Emerson's own recordings when the latter were donated to the BC Archives. These cassettes contain interviews recorded for a research project initiated in 1969 by the Creative Writing Department at the University of British Columbia. Department head Robert Harlow and grad student Paul Green interviewed Mrs. Mary Emerson and thirteen of Emerson's friends, colleagues and relatives. The apparent intent was to collect material for a biography of Emerson. The project was abandoned, and the tapes were given to Mrs. Emerson.

The interviewees are: Thora Anders, Eleanor Collins, Mary Emerson, Pat Gould (aka Pat Kirkpatrick), Doug Haskins, Ruby Kerr (aunt), Harold King, Karl Norman, Dr. Bruce Paige, Barney Potts, Dal Richards, Gay Scrivener, Bob Smith, and Jean Wilson.

John Emerson photographs

The series consists of photographs collected by John Emerson. It includes: 234 prints of publicity portraits, group shots, and performance photos of actors, actresses, musicians, bands, and other acts (some autographed, many identified), 11 snapshots, 1 negative, and 17 publicity or theatrical stills from a box of memorabilia about actor Emerton Court; and 25 personal and family photos.
