The collection comprises 21 films shot or produced between 1931 and 1949, mainly by the Photographic Branch of the British Columbia Government Travel Bureau. It includes prints of ten early BCGTB productions -- one silent and nine with sound -- as well as some reels of silent miscellaneous footage shot by the BCGTB. The completed BCGTB productions include travelogues about Vancouver Island, Qualicum, the Fraser Valley, the Okanagan Valley, the West and East Kootenays, the Bulkley/Skeena Region, and the route of the Pacific Great Eastern Railway, as well as films about BC's mining and tourism industries. Other reels show activities of the Canadian Scottish Regiment, based in Victoria; the Golden Gate International Exposition in San Francisco (1939); military parades in Victoria during World War Two; and outdoor activities such as hunting, skiing and trail riding.

Maynard family collection

Collection consists of records created by members of the Maynard family, primarily Hannah Hatherly Maynard and Richard Maynard. Hannah, Richard, and their son, Albert Hatherly Maynard, were professional photographers based in Victoria. Records include photograph albums, a portion of the photographic portfolio of Hannah and Richard Maynard, a studio register with over 5,000 customer entries for portrait orders fulfilled by Mrs. R. Maynard's Photographic Gallery, and a small number of textual business records. Within this collection, the works of other photographers and photographic studios may be found. Images depict studio portraits, family gatherings, field photographs for Department of Indian Affairs tours of inspection of Indigenous communities, construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway (C.P.R.), documentary photographs of the natural history collection of the Provincial Museum (now Royal BC Museum), and Hannah's experimental artistic works such as tableau vivants, photocollages, composites, montages, photo-sculptures, and double- and multiple-exposure studio portraits.

Records within this collection have been arranged into series that roughly correspond to Maynard Collection numbers that were assigned according to themes by either one of the Maynard family members or early BC Archives staff.

Maynard (family)

Medals, Tokens and Numismatic Collection

There are 4 main types of material in the collection: medals and awards of merit, tokens, numismatic paper, and numismatic coins. The category of “medals” also includes occasional items of jewelry, commemorative objects of various types and militaria, while the category of numismatic paper includes banknotes, tickets, ration books, scrip, coupons, passbooks and paper. Tokens were issued by a wide range of businesses including dairies, bakeries, and transportation companies.

Most of the material relates to British Columbia. There are occasional items (particularly paper and coinage) from other countries.

PR-2365 also includes the H.J. Sceats collection of Chinese, Japanese and Korean coinage (a gift to the B.C. Archives in 1937), and a collection of Roman and ancient British coins from an unknown source.

PR-2365 also includes 12.5 cm of associated textual material such as souvenir coin holders, cases, brochures, and letters of donation. These have been labelled with the same item number as the object to which they relate, and may be found in container 001967-0026.
The objects have been arranged by category of material (medals, tokens, numismatic paper and numismatic coins), with a few exceptions. Each object has a unique item number. Note that the item numbers in each container are not necessarily inclusive.

All items were re-housed and described as part of a volunteer project which concluded in 2017.

Miners' lives oral history project collection

The collection consists of records generated by Donald (interviewer) and Glen Treilhard (photographer) during their oral history project in 1983. Both were post-secondary students at the time and received grants from the Canada Council and the Royal Canadian Geographic Society. The Treilhards interviewed and photographed 39 Canadian miners in British Columbia, Yukon and the Northwest Territories. The collection includes 60 audio cassette tapes of interviews with the miners, a duo tang with project details, an index, an itinerary and interviewee list, photo and tape release forms from the interviewees and transcripts of the interviews. Audio tapes are arranged by geographical location and by date. There is also a small notebook listing the slides which are itemized by geographical location, roll number, slide number and subject. There are approximately 820 colour slides of the interviewees, their places of work and scenic views of the geographical regions through which the Treilhards travelled. There appear to be some slides listed in the index that are not in the slide binders, as well as some slides that are in the binders and that are not listed in the index. There is also a list stapled to the inside cover of the small notebook indicating which slides the Treilhards used in their project.

The collection consists of film printing elements and film prints accumulated by the Pacific Cinematheque as part of their archival mandate.

The collection also includes a few release prints of older National Film Board productions (1944-1968), most of which are no longer circulated by the NFB. These films on British Columbia subjects were selected from the Cinematheque's collection of NFB prints, most of which were acquired from the Vancouver Public Library. There is also a video transfer of the NFB film "Breakdown" (1951).

A smaller part of the collection (accession F1987:21) comprises prints and/or printing elements of nine films made in the period 1969-1975 by Vancouver independent and student filmmakers, including Peter Bryant, Fred Cawsey, Tom Shandel, Sylvia Spring, and Richard Watson. Most of these are short 16 mm films, but there are also 35 mm theatrical release prints of two B.C. features: Shandel's "Another Smith for Paradise" and Spring's "Madeleine Is . . .", both released in 1971.

The collection consists of 110 black and white negatives of the Port Progress (Blunden Harbour) settlement site and survey photos of the area. Included are ca. 10 images taken in Vancouver and Prince Rupert of diesel converted boats and Irish Fusiliers. There are also four black and white prints of the Port Progress group that were made from negatives but given separate id numbers.
The name of the photographer (or photographers) is unknown and there are several photographer numbering systems used so the collection may have been put together by David Mason Books, based on subject.
