Bapty, Walter, 1884-1973. Victoria; Soldier and Physician.

"Memoirs." Recollections of author's boyhood in London, Ontario, studies at Ontario Agricultural College, and medical training at the University of Western Ontario, reminiscences of his career as medical practitioner in Alberta (1906) and Victoria (1907-1940). MS includes detailed account of author's military career - notably his service in South Africa (1899-1900) with Canadian Artillery and the Canadian Scouts; in Victoria (1907-1914) with 88th Fusiliers and Victoria Independent Squadron of Horse; and in Europe (1915-1918) with 2nd Battalion, Canadian Mounted Rifles, and 102nd Battalion (North British Columbians). Additional reminiscences of author's inter-war service with 16th Battalion (Canadian Scottish Regiment), and of his postings with 2nd Battalion (Canadian Scottish) [1940-1942] and Canadian Army Medical Corps. [Folders 1-3]. Bapty's first-hand account of battles of Vimy Ridge and Passchendaele, regimental diary of 2nd Battalion, Canadian Scottish (1936-1942), pamphlet on regimental colours of 30th Regiment (BC Horse), correspondence dealing with soldiers' morale, and memoranda (1942) pertaining to British Columbia coastal defence included in collection [microfilm]. Unit also contains accounts of holiday expeditions to Barkerville (1927) and Forbidden Plateau (1936), plus eulogies and newspaper clippings concerning Bapty's career [Folders 4-7]. "Beginners Please: My Life in Amateur Theatre". Reminiscences of author's boyhood in Bolton, Lancaster, and early interest in amateur theatre, 1914-1948; account of immigration to New Brunswick and theatrical work in Fredericton, 1949-1954; recollections of his migration to Victoria, British Columbia and association with Victoria Theatre Guild and other local dramatic societies, 1955-1979. MS. includes photocopies of theatre programmes and newspaper cuttings.

Ben Morley file

The file contains three letters and three photographs relating to Ben Morley. There are carbon copies of two letters written by Ben Morley in 1967; one to the Editor of the Vancouver Sun and one to Dr. Gordon Shrum of the BC Hydro and Power Authority. Both letters concern the restoration of the S.S. Minto. There is also a reply from Hugh Keenleyside, Chair of BC Hydro. The three photographs include a copy print of Captain McLennan, a copy print of a 1928 photograph showing Captain W. Kirby's farewell party to the S.S. Slocan and a photograph from 1919, mounted on cardboard, showing the first year commercial class at the Nelson High School.

Czartoryski and includes a select bibliography of primary and secondary sources dealing with the history of the ethnic communities of Amber Valley (Alberta), Bella Coola (British Columbia), Falher (Alberta), La Crete (Alberta), Saltspring Island (British Columbia), Skarv (Alberta), Sointula (British Columbia), students' newsletters in Finnish from Sointula, 1912.

Bill of lading and land receipt

The file consists of two items: a bill of lading for the steamer Beaver, under Captain William Brotchie, to ship goods from Fort Nisqually to Camosun, dated 20 June 1843 and a receipt from the Vancouver Island Colonial Surveyor for 98 acres of land in Cowichan district, 1858.

Bill of sale between Jean Caux and James Reid

The file consists of a copy of a bill of sale between Jean Caux (Cataline) and James Reid of Quesnellemouth. The bill of sale is dated at Quesnellemouth 2 June 1888. The record clearly formed part of a larger court file originally, as W.A. Johnston, J.P. has noted "A - This is the paper writing referred to in the annex and affidavit of John Stephenson."

The record was found in collection and was separated from its original file.

Biographical information about Mary Barnes' family

The file consists of photocopied information including a biography, 1980, of Eleanor Armour Jamieson Postill, early Okanagan Valley settler and mother of Mary Barnes; and reminiscences about Elizabeth Jamieson, grandmother of Mary Barnes, entitled "The lady of New Westminster's first Presbyterian manse".
