The series consists of records created by the Dept. of Lands and Works between 1872 and 1896 regarding public works. The records contains contracts, specifications, correspondence, and some plans connected with the construction and repair of schools, government buildings, and smaller works.

A limited number of files contained plans and a few files contained plans only. These files are indicated in the finding aid by * and ** respectively. All plans have been removed from the files and accessioned in the Map Collection as M856047. Appendix 1 of the finding aid lists the plans.

The file list provides the file number assigned by Public Works, the original contract number in square brackets, the name of the building or work, and the date of the contract.

The series consists of a bill of quantities for a new court house building, Nanaimo, B.C. in 1895.

A complete bill of-quantities (tender) consists of the following sub-contract sections: excavator, mason, and bricklayer, carpenter and joiner's work, slater's work, plasterer's work, plumber's work - heating and electric light, coppersmith's work and painter's work.
A summary of the sub-contracts for each complete tender was also submitted. The collection consists of a list of tenders and eight completed tenders.

In 1943 commissions were granted to the Hon. Gordon McGregor Sloan, the Hon. Cornelius H. O'Halloran, the Hon. Sidney Alexander Smith, the Hon. James Moses Coady and the Hon. Henry Irvine Bird for British Columbia. In 1947 commissions were granted to the Hon. Arthur Douglas Macfarlane, the Hon. John Owen Wilson and the Hon. Andrew Miller Harper for British Columbia. In 1954 commissions were granted to the Hon. Norman William Whittaker, the Hon. Herbert Spencer Wood, the Hon. John Valentine Clyne, and the Hon. Herbert William Davey for British Columbia. In 1964 commissions were granted to the Hon. Sherwood Lett, the Hon. Arthur Edward Lord and the Hon. Norman William Whittaker for the Yukon Territory. The collection includes some administrative correspondence regarding the documents.

The series consists of 25 volumes of applications to purchase crown land created by the Lands Dept. between 1905 and 1970. The applications are arranged chronologically from application number 1681 to 46249 and include notices from the British Columbia Gazette, number of letter inward, application number, location and result. Each volumes contains a nominal index. Volumes 1 and 2 are missing.

Parliament buildings (Victoria) construction records

The series consists of seven bound volumes and 54 fascicles containing bills of quantities and priced bills relating to the building of the new Parliament buildings in Victoria, B.C. in 1893.

The volumes are identified as contract 2 and cover three areas of the Parliament buildings: no. 2 Administrative building, no. 3 Land Registry office and colonnade and no. 4 Printing Office and colonnade. Each of the bills of quantities is divided into trades groups including: excavations, concrete foundations, mason, waller, bricklayer; carpenter and joiner; slater and plasterer; coppersmith; smith and founder; plumber and painter. Many of the volumes have a name on the front and notations, including pricing, throughout.

The series also includes a sketch plan of main stairs of the Parliament Buildings. This plan was removed from the records and reaccessioned as M889055. There is also a file of financial records and tables of measurements used for the construction of the building in 1896.

The licence stubs are arranged in numerical order and include coal prospecting licenses 1-404, coal and petroleum prospecting licenses 405-9500 and coal, petroleum and natural gas prospecting licenses 9501-13000.

The series consists of the correspondence of Colin S. Campbell, Superintendent of Provincial Police in Victoria from March 1911 to August 1912. The files are arranged chronologically and contain letters inward to Campbell from Inspector Thomas Smith on the mainland, and include carbon copies of Campbell's replies. There are also a few letters written by Campbell when he was an inspector in 1911, to Superintendent F.S. Hussey.

The correspondence deals with complaints against police constables, equipment, condition of lock-ups and jails throughout the province, inspection of hotels and other administrative matters.
