This series consists of Forest Protection Plans, 1929, by S.E. Marling (288 pp.). Includes information on ranger stations, buildings, boats, equipment, fire lookouts, organization, trails, forest cover, causes of fires, and list of settlers with telephones.

This series consists of two volumes of registers created by the Canadian government. Volume 1 is a register of cancellations of pre-emption records in the Railway Belt, British Columbia, 1890-1894. Volume 2 is a register recording land transactions with subagents in the Railway Belt, 1915-1922; including transactions in Enderby, Vernon, Armstrong and Salmon Arm.

This series consists of records of the Royal Commission Investigating the Fruit Industry (and interrelated conditions) of the Districts Territorially Known as the Okanagan, Kootenay, and Kettle River of the Province of British Columbia, 1929-1930. This series contains registers of brands (for both cattle and horses) kept by district recording offices prior to 1914. Registers pertain to brands registered in Cariboo, Similkameen, Okanagan, and Nanaimo districts. This series may be used in conjunction with other district brands registers (GR-0409 - GR-0412) and with post-1914 brands registers (GR-1488). A regulated system of branding or marking livestock in British Columbia began with the Cattle Ordinance of 1869 (32 Vic., No. 114) which established a procedure whereby cattle brands and other distinctive markings could be registered with district magistrates for a fee of 25¢. The system developed further with the Cattle Marking Act, 1875 (BCS 38 Vic. c.14) which defined "cattle" to include "horses, mares, fillies, foals, geldings, colts, bulls, bullocks, cows, heifers, steers, calves, sheep, hogs, mules and asses." Recording officers were appointed by cabinet for each electoral district and were authorized to keep a register of brands and markings; local justices of the peace were empowered to ensure that brands were not duplicated, obliterated, or defaced and penalties were set for infractions. In 1881 the registration fee was raised to 50 ¢ (Cattle Brands Act, 44 Vic. c.4) and in 1888 provisions were made for regional cattle districts, whose boundaries were not necessarily identical to those of electoral districts. A distinction was also made in 1888 between the Mainland and Vancouver Island: in Mainland districts, brands were to be registered by an "authorized recording officer" usually the local Government Agent while on the Island brands were to be recorded by district magistrates. These distinctions were abolished in 1894 by the Cattle Act Amendment Act which confirmed Government Agents as "authorized recording officers" throughout the province. The procedure of registering brands was streamlined and centralized by the Brand Act of 1914 (4 Geo. 5 c.9). With this act, provision was made for a Recorder of Brands (responsible to the Minister of Agriculture) and a three man Board of Brand Commissioners. After 1 July 1914 all applications for brand registers or transfers were made through the Recorder's office in Victoria. The fee for brand registration was increased to $1.00 and henceforth all brands were to be renewed annually at a cost of 50 ¢. GR 1487 consists of brands registers and indexes kept prior to 1914. In most cases, the registers show the name and address of brand owners, the date and certificate number of the brand registration, and a description of registered brands and markings. Registers pertain to both cattle and horses. Since the districts covered by the registers were not rigidly defined, researchers may have to consult more than one volume to locate specific brands or brand owners. This series may be used in conjunction with GR 0409 GR 0412 (Registers for Cariboo, Lillooet, and New Westminster, 18701913) and with GR 1488 (post1914 brands registers and indexes).

This series contains correspondence, statistical returns, and reports of the Public Library Commission (PLC) and its successors, the Library Development Commission and the Library Services Branch. The series includes files of PLC pioneers Helen Gordon Stewart, H.N. Lidster, and C.K. Morison, plus records of PLC members at Provincial Library and Archives. The records also contain documents relating to regional libraries in Fraser Valley, Okanagan district, and Vancouver Island, along with correspondence pertaining to provincial library schools and associations.

This series contains records of the district engineer, Kelowna District, relating to irrigation and reclamation. Records include:

The item is a 38 page autobiography by Arthur G. Builder titled "Born 1902 - like Johnny Walker, still going strong". Mr. Builder emigrated from England to Canada in 1923, worked at various jobs in the Kootenays, Vancouver and Port Coquitlam and the Okanagan, and in Nova Scotia. He served in the Canadian army in England during World War II and spent much of his time in England until 1973 when he returned first to the Okanagan and then to Victoria.

This series contains records relating to the Royal Commission on the Tree-Fruit Industry of British Columbia.

The Royal Commission on the Tree-Fruit Industry of British Columbia was established by Order in Council 3181 on 21 December 1956 pursuant to section 3 of the Public Inquiries Act with Earle Douglas MacPhee appointed as sole commissioner. The Commission was to inquire into the problems of production, packing, storage, processing and marketing of the products of the tree-fruit industry of the Province, and in particular into what constitutes an economic unit of production; the economics of packing, storage, and processing facilities, procedures, and techniques employed in the Province; and the factors involved in the marketing of tree-fruit products.

The Commission established offices in Penticton and conducted public and closed hearings and meetings between January 1957 and August 1958. A three-volume report was submitted in October 1958.

The series consists of hearing and meeting transcripts, exhibits, research surveys, studies and reports, correspondence, administrative files and a final report. Missing are a number of the formally registered exhibits however correspondence and geographically arranged files appear to contain copies of similar briefs or information. Receipts indicate that some exhibits containing business records were returned to submitters.

This series contains records pertaining to the Southern Okanagan Irrigation Project at Oliver, B.C. Types of records include a bound report which includes contract specifications, a project summary, tenders, memoranda of agreement, cost data, minutes of meeting of the West Kootenay Power a-ad Light Co., rate schedules, correspondence, energy consumption tables, plans and photographs. The original report was prepared in 1923 with various records added periodically until 1940.

This series contains working records consisting of: File 1. Land Use and Land Alienation, Forestry vs. Ranching in the Interior of British Columbia, a xerographic copy of a paper presented to a hearing on land use at Quesnel on November 15, 1968; File 2. Memoranda on range management training 1978; File 3. Agenda for the 1978 Range Managers' meeting.

This series contains general correspondence files regarding Provincial Forest Reserves coded MFR Supervision according to the Forest Service filing system described in Operational Manual with instructions to Forest officers ... (Victoria, 1942), pp. 109-110, 341-353. For a copy see GR-0944, Box 1. Files containing this code pertain to all correspondence and reports dealing with Forest Reserves, policy, methods of classification for Reserve, regulations, Orders-in-Council establishing boundary surveys, etc.

This series contains the Commissioner of Grazing's file carbon copies of free grazing permits issued in the Vernon and Cariboo Grazing Districts as well as a letter transmitting grazing fees (form) from the Kamloops Grazing District. The boundaries of grazing districts coincide with those of the forest districts of the same name.

This series contains newsletters, bulletins and correspondence of the Provincial Horticulturalist. The records include copies of the the Okanagan District Horticultural Bulletin (1920), the Horticultural Branch Weekly Newsletter (1920-1924), Bulletin (1921-1924) and the Horticultural Newsletter (1924-1963. The correspondence files are incomplete and consist only of the Provincial Horticulturalist's alphabetical files for 1928, correspondence of the Coast Markets Commissioner (1923-1925) and price orders and circulars of the Interior Tree Fruit and Vegetable Committee of Direction (1928-1930).

The series is a register created by the Water Rights Branch from 1927 to 1928. It documents reverted lands in various irrigation districts and drainage areas in the Okanagan valley, including the Vernon, Kelowna, Westbank, Peachland and Grand Forks areas. Lists lands reverted to the Crown for non-payment of taxes and includes legal descriptions, name of last owner, acreage, amount irrigable, assessed values, etc.

This series includes registers relating to Crown Grants, Similkameen Division and Osoyoos Division, Yale District (2 vols.) Volume 1 is a register of Crown Grant applications forwarded to Victoria and includes date and disposition of application, name and address of applicant, legal description of land, Crown Grant number. Volume 2 is a register of Crown Grants and includes date of notice, number of grant, legal description of land, payment schedule, disposition and Grown Grant number. The registers are arranged chronologically.

This series consists of minutes of evidence given at hearings held at Vernon, 12 August 1919, and Victoria, 7 January 1920, by the commission of inquiry to inspect the water systems of the White Valley Irrigation and Power Company and Coldstream Estates, pursuant to section 171 of the Water Act, (1914).

Cecil Claxton was born in Hampstead, England in 1886. He joined the Merchant Marine and the Royal Naval Reserve, and both before and after the First World War, served in the Canadian Pacific's Trans-Pacific fleet, attaining the rank of Staff Captain. In 1936 he became Superintendent of Pilots, British Columbia Pilotage district, and held that position until his retirement in 1953. While Captain Claxton was in the Pilot Service, the Claxtons lived in West Vancouver and Vancouver. After his retirement, he and Mrs. Claxton moved to Pender Island. In 1927, Cecil Claxton married Helen Violet MacGregor who was born in Kuling, China in 1898. Her father, Roderick MacGregor was with the Imperial Maritime Customs. Her mother, Annie Say, went to China in 1886 after receiving nursing and social service training in England. The MacGregors had four daughters; Mrs. A.L. Buckley (Nan), widowed during the First World War, who lived in England; Mrs. H.A. Cornaby (Jay or Jessie) also widowed during the First World War, who returned to China from England, was interned there during the Second World War, and then moved to British Columbia; Flora, who taught at the Shanghai Municipal Council Public School for Girls and also moved to British Columbia after the Second World War, and Helen. Peter, the Claxton's son, was born in 1929, and as a very young child lost his sight. He was educated at the West Vancouver Nursery School, operated by his mother, St. George's School (Vancouver), the National Institute for the Blind School of Physiotherapy, in London, England, and the University of British Columbia, from which he received a B.SC. in Agriculture in 1962. The collection contains two major series from Captain Claxton to his wife; letters, 1924-1932, written from various Canadian Pacific ships, mainly the Empress of Asia, largely domestic and personal, but containing references to incidents on voyages and at ports of call; and letters 1942-1943, written while Mrs. Claxton and Peter were living near Vernon for Peter's health which may contain some references to the Pilot service but seem to be almost entirely domestic. A third series of letters from Captain Claxton concerns arrangements to send Peter to the National Institute for the Blind School of Physiotherapy and consists of letters, 1946-1952, to the school and to his relatives in England. The letters from Mrs. Claxton to Captain Claxton, 1942-1943, are written from the Okanagan, mainly Vernon. They are largely concerned with domestic matters and Peter's development, but are also full of descriptions of their friends and activities in the Okanagan. Peter Claxton's letters consist mainly of ones written to his parents from England, 1949-1954, and from the University of British Columbia, 1958-1962. Amongst other correspondence and manuscripts written by him, the collection contains a long account of a trip made with a friend to the Cariboo ca. 1961. Letters from Mrs. MacGregor and from Flora, written from China, while they are mainly personal, form an interesting example of the life led by one segment of the British in China in the late 1920s and 1930s.

Series consists of some family memorabilia, and records relating to the career of J.M. Robinson as a school teacher, MLA and newspaper proprietor (Brandon Times and the Portage La Prairie Printing and Publishing Co.) in Manitoba. Several notebooks and a diary relate to his interest in prospecting in B.C. (area between Rossland and Okanagan) and to his interest in spiritualism, including its use in prospecting.

The bulk of the series consists of minute books, correspondence, financial and legal records relating to Robinson's various development companies: Okanagan Securities, Canadian Irrigated Orchards, Okanagan Realty, Naramata Supply Co., Hotel Naramata, Hotel Summerland and Crescent Beach Co.

The series also contains letters inward to the Headmistress of Naramata School for Girls, 1942-1946 and photographs of school activities, Visual Records accession 198504-16. Microfilm (neg.) 1879, 1897, 1929-1931 35 mm 6 reels [A01438-A01443] John Moore Robinson (1855-1934) moved to the Okanagan in 1898 and acquired and developed property at Peachland, Summerland and Naramata. He also had a career as a school teacher, MLA and newspaper proprietor (Brandon Times and the Portage La Prairie Printing and Publishing Company) in Manitoba. He had an interest in prospecting in British Columbia (area between Rossland and Okanagan) and spiritualism, including its use in prospecting. His business interests included the Summerland Trust Company, incorporated in 1907. The company name changed to Okanagan Trust Company Limited, on September 12, 1911, and finally to Okanagan Securities Limited on August 28, 1915. He was also involved with the Naramata Development Company (incorporated in 1907) which became Canadian Irrigated Orchards Limited in October 5, 1926. The bulk of the records consist of minute books, correspondence, financial and legal records relating to Robinson's companies: Okanagan Securities, Canadian Irrigated Orchards, Okanagan Realty, Naramata Supply Company, Hotel Naramata, Hotel Summerland and Crescent Beach Company. There are several notebooks and a diary related to prospecting and spiritualism. Also included is some family memorabilia and letters inward to the Headmistress of Naramata School for Girls, 1942-1946. Maps transferred to Map accession 19419.
