British Columbia Hydro and Power Authority films
The fonds consists of industrial, engineering, and public relations films created for or by British Columbia Hydro and Power Authority and its predecessors (the British Columbia Electric Company and the British Columbia Power Commission) from 1945 to about 1984. This material includes 164 unique film items in 16 mm film, each containing one or more printing elements such as prints, sound tracks, negative reels, selected out-takes and unedited footage. In some cases, there are no edited prints, only miscellaneous reels of footage.
Most of the BC Electric and BC Hydro films are the work of Vancouver producer Lew M. Parry. The fonds also includes a number of non-Hydro films produced by Parry, as well as a selection of prints and film material relevant to BC which had been circulated through (or stored at) Hydro's film library.

British Empire Games 1954 : out-takes
The item consists of film out-takes of the British Empire Commonwealth Games of 1954. Based on footage shot by amateurs at Empire Stadium and UBC, the outs include shots of ceremonies, cycling, diving, swimming, the mile run and the marathon, including the collapse of Jim Peters.

It shows the first phase of the Bridge River Project including construction of the Bridge River diversion dam, Seton Lake powerhouse, penstock on Mission Mountain, and power transmission lines to Vancouver; site preparation for La Joie storage dam and opening of first phase on 23 October 1948. There is also footage of Vancouver and vicinity emphasizing demand for electrical power.
Bridge River stage two (dam) : part 1 : Soletanche
The item is an industrial film on a black and white workprint made between 1956 and 1960. It contains footage of the construction of the Mission Dam on the Bridge River project Soletanche and shows special operations (1958-59) required to seal the foundations and substrata under the site to prevent seepage. Depicts work to remove sections of old steel pilings (cut loose by divers with torches working in mud-filled pits); driving a wall of sheet pilings; manufacturing a clay/cement grout mixture and forcing it into the substrata under pressure to form an impervious curtain. This film is likely very similar to the French-language film produced for the French engineering firm (Soletanche Ltd.) which carried out the work.

It shows BC-related activities in London England leading up to the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, including the laying of a wreath on the grave of Capt. George Vancouver and Lt.-Gov. Clarence Wallace planting a dogwood tree in the same churchyard. The film begins and ends with BC footage showing highlights of the 1951 Royal Visit of Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh. There is also a brief sequence showing decorations and activities in Victoria and Vancouver to mark the coronation.

It is the third film of a three-part engineering record of the manufacture and laying of an undersea power cable from the mainland to Vancouver Island. Part three shows the laying of five cables from Saltspring Island to Parker Island (3 miles) and from Tsawwassen Beach to Galiano (14 miles) by the cable-laying ship "Ocean Layer". It also shows shore operations and connections. The cable became operational on 25 September 1956.

Return to Vancouver harbour; motorcade up Kingsway Avenue, Burnaby Municipal Hall, Royal Train arrives at New Westminster, departure. There are also good (brief) shots of Kitsilano Boy's Band, Junior Forest Wardens, Major J.S. Matthews, Very Rev. Cecil Swanson (dean of Christ Church), and BC Provincial Police on motorcycles with sidecars.

The item is a workprint of an industrial film from 1958. It shows the laying of twin undersea cables from Tsawwassen Beach to Galiano Island and Parker Island to Saltspring Island by Her Majesty's Telegraphic Ship "Monarch", the world's largest cable-laying vessel.

BC locations include Kootenay National Park and Radium Hot Springs.

The item is a release print of an industrial film from 1956-1957. It shows the construction of the Georgia Gas Turbine Generating Station on Bare Point at Chemainus. Footage includes press conference with BC Power Commission general manager Lee Briggs, construction of power plant, cantilever tanker dock and fuel tank farm by Sandwell and Company Ltd., design of turbines in New York and transport operation, arrival of tanker "Oregon Standard" with first load of fuel. There is also a sequence on Vancouver Island communities and industries regarding their demand for electricity.
John Hart development : stock shots
The item consists of a reel of footage from ca. 1959. It contains stock shots of switchyard, transformer, main dam, spillway/rapids and row of generators inside powerhouse, all at the John Hart development. Sequence appears three times on the roll, with slight variations.

The films document the construction of major dams and hydro-electric plants at Arrow Lake, Duncan Lake and Mica Creek in the Columbia River basin and the W.A.C. Bennett (Portage Mountain) Dam on the Peace River, as well as the Revelstoke and Seven Mile projects of the 1970s. From the late 1970s and early 1980s, there is a group of public relations films on alternative energy sources and energy conservation. Also included are films on the Burrard Thermal Generating Station at Ioco, a Greater Vancouver bus route, and safety procedures for linemen, as well as some unedited footage and TV commercials.

The item consists of two reels of reversal footage from 1976. It depicts the transportation of a "turbine runner" for the Mica dam from the Vancouver docks to the dam site (via CP Rail flatcar to Revelstoke, truck to the Columbia River, and barge to Mica).
