Activism posters and flyers

Series consists of 20 posters of various sizes, some in colour but most are printed or copied with black ink only. Many of the posters announce events presented or sponsored by the Progressive Workers' Movement (P.W.M.). Numerous are protesting the Vietnam War.

Address and notes

The file contains an address given to the Canadian Society of Technical Agriculturalists in 1931 entitled "Street Beautification in Victoria" by William Herbert Warren, a Victoria Parks Administrator. It also includes notes collected on the life of George Holland, 1953.

Address and order book

The item consists of a hardbound “order book” that appears to have been created in about 1914. There is no date written in the volume, but searches in the vital statistics index have turned up records that indicate it was created after April 1914 and prior to November 1914. The volume lists the names and addresses of women, and in many cases, it also lists what goods and services they could supply. Goods include embroidery, fine tatting, knitted garments, crochet hats, china riveting, tortoise shell products, dinner mats, children’s whitewear, and foodstuffs.

The volume may have been created by a local Women’s Institute, and may list women available to assist with fundraising or early war work. The majority of individuals listed lived in the Greater Victoria area, although several lived in the Cowichan Valley and Salt Spring Island.

Adolph family notes

The file consists of the reminiscences of Frederick William Adolph who operated a lumber mill at Baynes Lake in the Kootenay district in the early twentieth century; photocopy of marriage certificate, 1861, of Frederick Adolph and Margaret Lamont, parents of F.W. Adolph and genealogical notes by Valerie Adolph.

Adventures of a farm girl in Canada in 1925 / Joan Nina Simpson

The file contains "Adventures of a farm girl in Canada in 1925", by Joan Simpson, with a forward by her god-daughter, June Knowles. It consists of four reminiscences about life on a cattle ranch and in a fruit growing area of British Columbia by a young English woman who spent a year or two in British Columbia in the early 1930s. Although both personal and geographical names have been changed, the ranch on which Miss Simpson worked was undoubtedly the Church Ranch at Big Creek in the Chilcotin district.

The item is a microfilm copy of a thesis by Jefferson Eugene Grigsby (Jr.) titled "African and Indian masks: a comparative study of masks produced by the Ba Kuba tribe of the Congo and masks produced by the Kwakiutl Indians of the Northwest Pacific Coast of America." 299 leaves: illus., maps. A.J.T. Taylor : reminiscences

The item is a sound recording of Victoria-born businessman A.J.T. Taylor. Taylor promoted the development of the British Pacific Properties in West Vancouver, and the construction of Lions Gate Bridge. These recordings, made by the BBC during a visit to England in 1936, have Taylor reminiscing about Victoria, Nanaimo and Vancouver (1890s-1910s), including his experiences in the boarding house business. The interview seems to be incomplet;e, suggesting that some additional discs are missing.

Album : Blankenbach photographs

The file consists of a photograph compiled by the Frederick and Alice Blankenbach family during their time at "Westward Ho" at the corner of Cadboro Bay and Telegraph Bay Road in Oak Bay, B.C. The album contains photographs of the Blankenbach family and friends, their homes and neighbourhoods, taken between ca. 1902 and 1905.

Album of Laura Lillian Maynard [copy prints]

The item consists of selected reproductions of images from a Maynard family photograph album containing photographs relating to the Maynard family and the Victoria-based commercial photographic studio Mrs. R. Maynard’s Photographic Gallery (1862-1912). The album is presumed to be created in the late 1890s. The album is attributed to Laura Lillian Maynard (1873-1951), the daughter of George H Maynard and Mary Elizabeth Davies. The photographs are taken by a photographer(s) whose identity is not stated.

The selected images consist of eight photographic prints depicting different portraits and views. Two images illustrate an unidentified photographic studio both occupied and unoccupied. Another photograph consists of a group portrait depicting a gathering of people outdoor, possibly the Maynard family. Three prints showcase scenes of a residence including one exterior view of a residence and surrounding neighbourhood, and two interior views of a domestic residence. There is also a studio portrait of Mrs. Hannah Maynard in the later stages of her career and life. Finally, there is one image of a construction scene featuring a number of workers in view.

Of the two interior views of a domestic residence, one image includes a depiction of Arthur Rappertie and his mother, Elizabeth Rappertie, in their apartment behind the Maynard Studio on Pandora Street circa 1898 (F-06918). The other image includes several framed photographs in the background. These are studio portraits of Hannah and Richard Maynard of Mrs. R. Maynard’s Photographic Gallery of Victoria, B.C.
