Diaries

Diaries kept by Mary Carolina (Williams), September 1922 - February 16, 1925. Mary Williams taught school at Mud River, B.C. (seventeen miles south west of Prince George) from 5 September 1922 to 27 June 1924. She then taught school at Park Court, Alberta; diary entries cover the period from 17 September 1924 to 16 February 1925. A typescript of the diaries has been filmed with the originals.

Correspondence

Series consists of a letter from Barkerville men serving in the army in World War I: Joseph Callanan, John Hugh Ellis, Freeman Killam, George Gilchrest, R. Norrie, Nowokowsky, John Petterson, Ernest Seeley, Norman W. Thompson, George Turner, J.B. Westover.

This series consists of land and resource management committee files and executive records from the Cariboo Region, 1990-1998. Records relate to a variety of environmental and land use issues in the Cariboo Chilcotin area, including: wildlife management, water, use of range land, Taseko Mines proposal, fishing, land and resource management plans (LRMPs) and the development and implementation of the Cariboo Chilcotin Land Use Plan. Records include correspondence, reports, minutes, reference material and briefing notes.

Executive records include referral replies, files of reference material and some files regarding specific issues and projects involving the Minister and other Executives.

Records include minutes and other operational records of several different committees. Most records are from the Cariboo Regional Interagency Management Committee and Commission on Resources and Environment (CORE). There are also related files from the Cariboo Chilcotin Regional Resource Board, Cariboo Chilcotin Land Use Committee and meeting files from various regional mangers and executive groups.

Files may include consultations with and comments from community groups, resource users and First Nations regarding the development of management plans, land use and environmental issues.

Records have been selected for permanent retention and are scheduled under Administrative Records Classification numbers 204-20, 280-30 and 102-20.

The series consists of indexes to partnerships registered in the County Court of Quesnel. The ledgers are arranged alphabetically and cover both firms and individuals. The whereabouts of the records to which the indexes refer is unknown. Typical entries in the firm index include the style of firm, names of persons composing the firm, and the date of declaration. Entries in the individual index consist of the name of individual, the style of firm of which a member, and the date of declaration.

The series consists of one volume of the naturalization register created at the County Court of Quesnel. Records date to between 1914 and 1977. The ledger is arranged alphabetically and entries provide information on the full name of applicant, their occupation, former place of residence, current place of residence, the date notice and papers were filed, the date naturalization certificate was issued, the date it was delivered and to whom it was delivered. Places of residence include Quesnel, Cottonwood, Moose Heights, Wells, Hixon, Barkerville, and Van Winkle. The register also includes a “declaration of intent” list tucked into the front cover.

Creditor's relief procedure book

The series consists of one volume of the Creditor’s Relief Act procedure book. Typical entries include names of claimant and debtor, the amount of debt and costs, the date of judgement and a list of proceedings. Records are arranged chronologically and the volume is unindexed.

The records were created in accordance with the Creditor Relief Act (SBC 1902, c. 17).

This series consists of three volumes of Richfield Magistrate's record books. Volumes are a charge and sentence book, 1862-1874; charge and sentence book, 1974-1978, containing licencing records kept by the court registry, 1878-1907; and a notebook, 1887-1914, recording Magistrate's court cases at Richfield, Small Debts Court cases at Richfield and some cases at Soda Creek and Quesnel.

Small Debts Court ledger and ledger of advances

The series consists of one ledger that includes both advance and refund information as well as balances from the Barkerville Small Debts Court. The first ten pages of the ledger appear to have been used by the Government Agent in Barkerville, and provide information on cash advances and refunds from 1941 to 1948. Many of the advances were made to police constables, and included in the ledger are several “Authority for Cash Advance” forms addressed to the Government Agent at Barkerville and signed by Sergeant T. R. Baker, who may have been provincial police sergeant Thomas Raymond Baker.

The second half of the ledger includes a list of receipts and disbursements for the Small Debts Court, presumed to be at Barkerville.

Presentments of the Grand Jurors

Presentments of the Grand Jurors in and for the District of Cariboo East, July 1867. The report is submitted by J.H. Todd (foreman) to Chief Justice Begbie and reports on the Jury's inspection of the hospital, jail, court house, sidewalks and roads, fire hazards in town particularly the need for an explosives storehouse, the need for better trails to outlying creeks and the annoyance caused by an unnecessary number of dogs. Chief Justice Begbie responds to each of these points in his covering letter forwarding the presentments to the Colonial Secretary.

Records are arranged chronologically and show the name of the deceased, the name of the petitioner, and the steps taken to administer the estate, included but not limited to conducting searches of the Central Wills Registry. Container 831222-0001 contains an alphabetical index to the volume in 831222-0002.

Charles George Cowan business records

Business records of Cowan and Penrose Land Agents (Kamloops), including office diaries, correspondence, accounts, and legal documents re property they handled arranged alphabetically under the names of the English investors. Papers of C.P. Cunliffe re his investments in Colonel James Baker's Cranbrook estate and the Cariboo Trading Company, 1913-1931. Papers of C.G. Cowan re acquisition of the Onward Ranch and the 150 Mile Ranch from the Cariboo Trading Company.

Surveying diaries and notes

The series consists of Henry Fry's diaries of surveys in 1885, 1887 and 1889; field notes of surveys carried out mainly on Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands and the Cariboo; and field notes of surveys on various mineral claims and fractional mineral claims carried out on Vancouver Island 1885-1911. The series also contains some field notes of surveys carried out by W. Ralph 1886, M. Boyd 1904-1905, J.B. Green 1908, and R.C. Mainguy 1910, 1919 and 1923.

This series consists of a list of sawmills, planer mills and barker-chippers organized by Ranger District until 1979 and by Forest District thereafter, compiled by the District forester/Regional Manager. Contains information as to name of mill or mill owner, address, physical location, type, i.e.: portable, stationary, farmer, planer in connection with saw mill, or equipped with gang saws, capacity per shift in cubic meters (mbm before metrication) and projected expansion. Compiled twice a year until 1955, annually thereafter.
