Register of Victoria District School, 1861-1865, and school account book, 1862-1864. The Register shows the names and attendance of students at the school. "Accounts" include supply list of food staples, etc., showing prices and customs duties, along with student fee payments. As well, the volume contains addresses and a "Story of Moses" by schoolmaster W. H. Burr. Also included are newspaper cuttings re: the early history of Victoria schools and an annotated list of pupils attending the Victoria District School, ca. 1862. The list was prepared for the Provincial Archivist, John Forsyth, by Edgar Fawcett in April 1922.

Robert William Torrens fonds

The fonds consists of correspondence and reports written by and about Robert William Torrens between 1858 and 1865. In 1859 and 1865, Torrens took part in several different expeditions that took him to Haida Gwaii, along the Nass River, through the area of Clayoquot Sound, and to Bear River. During these trips, he interacted with many local Indigenous populations, and wrote about these encounters in his reports. The fonds also includes several letters of recommendation for Torrens and his 1865 oath of office for the position of stipendiary magistrate for the colony of Vancouver Island.

The Register, showing the names of pupils attending the second public school in British Columbia, was maintained by Cornelius Bryant, schoolmaster from 1856-1870. Also included, on a loose sheet, is a detailed schedule showing time devoted to various subjects on a typical school day.

This series consists of a Douglas Land District land register from Range 1, Section 1 to Range 8, Section 20 on Vancouver Island. Entries date from 1864-1865. The registers record the land in numerical order and records the alienation of land from the Crown (by purchase, preemption, lease, etc.). Information may include the name of the purchaser, dates and numbers of certificates issued (including Crown Grants), dates and amounts of payments, and reference numbers to correspondence files and field books. The volume contains an alphabetical name index.

Edward Cridge, recommending the appointment of Henry Claypole as teacher (1859); and letter from the Duke of Newcastle, recommending Claypole's services (1860). Also includes correspondence from Claypole, requesting increase in salary (1861), criticizing Common Schools Act and tendering his resignation (1865). Some records were removed from GR-1372 (Colonial Correspondence), files F330 and F395.

The fonds consists of eight items: folder 1, a marriage license (1855 ), folder 2, transcript from a marriage register (1857), folder 3, a Masonic lodge certificate (1865), folder 4, a certificate of competency as a ship's master (1853), folder 5, an indenture certificate (1840), folder 6, a certificate of character and discharge (1853), folder 7, an empty linen document envelope with "H.B. Ella" on one side and a partial original of Martha Ella's diary. The 1855 marriage license was signed by Governor James Douglas, while the 1857 license was signed by Bishop Edward Cridge.

The series consists of a duplicate cash book of payments received by Alexander Watson, treasurer, for mining revenue from Sooke Mines, Vancouver Island, commencing December 1864 (1864-1865).

The journal is organized into debtor and creditor cash pages (abbreviated Dr. and Cr) that are recorded on the left-hand and right-hand sides respectively: “Dr” cash pages include date, receipt number, from whom, receipt description, and amount; “Cr” cash pages include date, summary of payment by type, and amount.

Mining revenue resulted from payments for licences, records of mining claims and transfers, percentage on purchase money, and records of water privileges. Payments correspond to the mining regulations and fees for Sooke District issued by the Acting Colonial Secretary Henry Wakeford on July 29, 1864 (published in The Daily British Colonist).

The script throughout the volume varies.

This series consists of financial ledgers used by the Colony of Vancouver Island treasury from 1859-1865. Volume 1 covers 1859-1861. Volume 2 covers 1862-1865.

Ledger books are financial records in which each transaction is entered under a particular account or subject as a debit or a credit. The information may have been copied from a related daybook or journal before being sorted and copied into the ledger. Accounts can include anything that is a source of government income or expenditure, such as: salaries, rent, licences, postage, lighthouses, military, mining fees, roads, etc. Account names may be indexed.

Information may be entered under the following headings: date, related journal page, description of the transaction, and the amount. Debit transactions are recorded on the left side of a folio and credits on the right side.

The series consists of two duplicate cash book for the Douglas collectorate, created by the Treasury between 1861 and 1866. Volume 1: January 1861 to March 1862. Volume 2: January 1862 to March 1866.

The collectorate was managed by the Stipendiary Magistrate (which also also acted as Government Agent) for the Douglas District. In 1866 the Douglas District was merged into the New Westminster District.

Lands and Works Department letter book

The series is an indexed letter book kept by the Lands and Works Department from 1864 to 1868. The first part of the book is an alphabetical index which lists the correspondence by subject or name and the page number for that particular letter. From pages 25 to 588, there are letter book copies of correspondence outward from Acting Surveyor General B.W. Pearse to various colonial officials, along with follow up notes and memos and copies of some correspondence inward. The correspondence covers all matters to do with lands and public works.

Records of the Colony of Vancouver Island Treasury

This series consists of a variety of records related to the Colony of Vancouver Island Treasury from 1853-1866. The majority of the records are various receipts, expenditures, estimates and financial statements of accounts. Accounts relate to a wide variety of government expenses, particularly those of the Land Office and transactions with the Hudson's Bay Company.

Other records include: a 1859 return of officers submitted to the Legislative Assembly detailing all employees of the colony, including their names, title, salary and remarks; an 1860 index of letters outwards including the date and subject; and a copy of the 1866 budget act with associated schedules.
