British Columbia Historical Association, Victoria Section fonds

  • PR-2251
  • Fonds
  • 1961-1982

The fonds consists of records of the British Columbia Historical Association, Victoria Section. The records date from before 1983, the year the provincial parent body changed its name to the British Columbia Historical Federation.

The fonds consists of two groups of records. MS-3287, General office files, dates from 1961 to 1982, and includes minutes of regular meetings and of executive council; correspondence; membership-related records; mailing lists; publicity records; and notes on historical information about pioneer families of the Victoria area.

The second group of records in the fonds consists of 72 sound recordings of lectures and talks on historical subjects which were presented at the monthly meetings of the Victoria organization between 1969 and 1977.

The sound recordings were originally held by BC Archives under a fonds numbered AAAA8103. These recordings then were given the number and title PR-2251 - British Columbia Historical Association, Victoria Section collection. In 2016, PR-2251 was renamed British Columbia Historical Association, Victoria Section fonds, and the sound recordings were made a series (MS-3289) within the fonds.

Victoria Supreme Court bankruptcy indexes

  • GR-3743
  • Series
  • 1920-1990

The series consists of several different indexes relating to bankruptcy in Victoria and across the country. The records were maintained in the Victoria Supreme Court, and although they generally relate to records created in the 1960s to 1990s, at least one volume dates to the 1920s and 1930s. Early indexes are arranged alphabetically by the surname of the bankrupt individual. Later indexes, particularly those dealing with the late 1980s, are divided first by year and then arranged alphabetically. The 1989 to 1990 index provides the name of the individual, the name of the trustee, and a file number. All file numbers appear to refer to cause book entries, which give a more detailed account of proceedings in the case.

The series also consists of a subseries of records maintained by the Victoria Supreme Court that relate to bankruptcy cases heard outside of Victoria. Many of these volumes index entries in the Canada Gazette, and list individuals in Ontario and across the country. There are also several volumes that index bankruptcies across the province, and include entries from places such as Barriere, Penticton, and Rossland.

Vancouver Island court records and indexes

  • GR-3758
  • Series
  • 1866-1867

The series consists of records created by the Vancouver Island courts of civil justice between approximately 1866 and 1867. The index records in this series appear to be drafts of an index to civil suits, and cases mentioned in this rough index appear in volume 3 of GR-2716 (plaint and procedure books from the Vancouver Island Inferior Court of Civil Justice). The index is not complete.

Several of the index pages were written on the back of records belonging to the probate file of Emilia Fedaro (also spelled Fidaro), who died in 1867 or 1868. The probate pages include the granting of letters of administration to Robert Newell, as well as what appears to be a draft of a covering page to the probate file.

Vancouver Island Road Tax Commissioner records

  • GR-4112
  • Series
  • 1861-1875

This series consists of records created by Road Commissioners from various road districts in the Colony of Vancouver Island, from 1861-1875. This includes the Victoria, Esquimalt, Esquimalt Town, Lake, Saanich, Metchosin, Sooke and Highlands Road Districts.

The records include financial records such as cash books, account books, road tax assessment rolls and ledgers. These track the fines and taxes collected for each district, and the expenses for road construction and maintenance. Some records indicate the individuals who paid for and worked on specific roads in the Victoria area that are still in existence today.

Other records include correspondence and minute books recording the decisions and priorities of the commissioners. These indicate where and how roads were constructed as the colony was growing.
