This series consists of one financial waste book volume used by the Colony of Vancouver Island treasury from 1859-1860. Waste books are rough account book in which transactions are recorded as they occur. Waste book entries are often transferred to day books prior to summary in journals and ledgers. These transactions are entered chronologically by date and are arranged under various accounts. Information may be entered under the following headings: date, related journal page, head or service or a description of the transaction, amount and total.

This series contains records relating to pre-emptions in the Cariboo, Lillooet, Lytton and Kootenay Districts recorded by various Gold Commissioners and Assistant Commissioners of Lands and Works. The records consist of correspondence, notices of claim, sketches and affidavits and pertains largely to records in the vicinities of Quesnel, Alexandria, Williams Lake, Lytton and Cache Creek. The series also includes a detailed account of town lot sales at Quesnellemouth held on 13 October 1863 as well as an application for wages due, correspondence on various land disputes, several water records, and proposed leases of government reserves.

Lillooet district land registers

This series consists of Lillooet Land District lot registers for lots 1-3000. The earliest record was entered in 1860 and all volumes were superseded by 1943 (i.e. no further entries were made after 1943).

The registers list lots in numerical order and record the alienation of land from the Crown (by purchase, pre-emption, lease, etc.). Information may include the name of the purchaser, dates and numbers of certificates issued (including Crown Grants), dates and amounts of payments, and reference numbers to correspondence files and field books. There is an alphabetical name index in each volume.

Photographs removed from Craigflower Schoolhouse

The series consists of photographs removed from the Craigflower Schoolhouse. The photographs were most likely used for display purposes and several of the prints are mounted on cardstock with explanatory captions. The majority of the photographs are contemporary to their time of creation (predominantly late 19th century), however several of the photographs also appear to be more modern copy prints, some of which were perhaps originally copied from BC Archives holdings.

The photographs display people and places associated with the history of Craigflower Schoolhouse.

Records related to the Esquimalt graving dock and naval station

This series consists of a variety of records related to the navy base and graving dock in Esquimalt from approximately 1860-1923. The majority of the records appear to have been created or received by the naval storekeeper and relate to the administration of the Esquimalt dockyard and the naval canteen at the Esquimalt navy base. This includes staffing, construction and the lease and purchase of the canteen land. records include correspondence, memoranda and plans of the canteen land.

The series also includes a list of orders-in-council related to the graving dock; a history of the graving dock; a receipt and account book for the graving dock created by the British Columbia Minister of finance; a report for the Canadian Governor-General related to the disposition of records regarding the North Pacific Naval Station, Esquimalt; and several records created by the Vancouver Island Lighthouse Board providing information and statistics on the Race Rocks [Racerocks] lighthouse and Fisgard Lighthouse.

Records of the Colony of Vancouver Island Treasury

This series consists of a variety of records related to the Colony of Vancouver Island Treasury from 1853-1866. The majority of the records are various receipts, expenditures, estimates and financial statements of accounts. Accounts relate to a wide variety of government expenses, particularly those of the Land Office and transactions with the Hudson's Bay Company.

Other records include: a 1859 return of officers submitted to the Legislative Assembly detailing all employees of the colony, including their names, title, salary and remarks; an 1860 index of letters outwards including the date and subject; and a copy of the 1866 budget act with associated schedules.

This series consists of a record of land claims and government reservations, by William George Cox, Esq., Magistrate, Rock Creek, B.C., 1860-1862. Cox was the magistrate and Gold Commissioner for this area at the time. The volume includes descriptions of land claimed by settlers, as well as general government reserves and Indian Reserves. The back of the volume was used as a Sheriff's book for the County of Cariboo, and a police charge book, 1861.

This series consists of a Yale Division of Yale Land District lot register for lots 1-728. Cariboo Government Agency financial records

This series consists of a variety of financial records created by the Cariboo Government Agent and its successors from 1860-1948. Records are related to locations throughout the Cariboo and Chilcotin region, including, Quesnel (Quesnelle Forks or Quesnelmouth), Lightening Creek, Barkerville and Richfield. Records include collectorate cash books, waste books, records of payments of pre-emptions, assay office expenses, a mineral tax register, liquor sale records, a Bank of British Columbia bank book, a company stock journal, a tax assessment book, handwritten notes and invoices, and a list of arms borrowed from the Government Agent at Quesnelmouth. There is also a record book documenting supplies, equipment, memoranda's, and some records from the Lightening Creek Gold Commissioner's Court.

Collectorate books record the collection of various fees by the government agent. Such as trade licences, liquor licences, marriage licences, pre-emption records, water records, mining records, fines such as “Indian fines”, deposits and rent.

Cariboo Gold Commissioner correspondence inward

This series consists of correspondence inward of the Cariboo Gold Commissioner regarding mining leases, indentures, partnerships and leaves of absence, mainly dated 1864. Records are filed alphabetically by the name of the individual or the company.

Corporate registry files

The series consists of registry files created by the Corporate Registry, documenting the registration, corporate history and dissolution of all companies, societies and co-operatives that operated in British Columbia, and were dissolved between 1860 and 1993. In accordance with the Company Act, companies, societies and co-operatives that carry on business in British Columbia must register with the Corporate Registry and must regularly submit reports and other records to the registry office. For example, companies must file an annual report each year along with forms recording any changes to the head office and/or records office locations, and changes to the company directors. The file that the Corporate Registry creates may contain an assortment of documents.

These documents include articles of incorporation, certificates of incorporation, articles of association, annual reports, director's resolutions, notices of directors, notices of office, changes of office, encumbrance and mortgage documents, ledger cards, ordinary and special resolutions, constitutions and by-laws, memoranda, correspondence with the Corporate Registry, and dissolution documents. The pre-1970 files may also contain return of allotment information.

The series is arranged into twenty sub-series that reflect the type of company and the company act that was in force at the time that the company was registered. Each sub-series has its own numbering system, preceded by a set of initials that designates the sub-series. Each company file is numbered sequentially within these sub-series. For companies with head offices in British Columbia, there are six sub-series. For companies with head offices in British Columbia, and registered between 1860 and 1910, there are five different sub-series that correspond to the five different company acts that were in force in this period. These sub-series are identifiable by the following initials: QA 1860 Company Act QB 1862 Company Act QC 1878 Company Act QD 1890 Company Act QE 1897 Company Act. Since the 1910 Companies Act, the Companies Office has maintained one sub-series, and numbering system, for all companies with head offices in British Columbia. This sub-series is identifiable by the initials "BC."

There are also sub-series documenting societies, co-operatives and extra provincial companies that carried out business in BC. Societies and co-operatives are identifiable by the following initials: S society CP co-operatives Extra provincial companies have several designations reflecting the date that they were registered. Since the 1920's, all extra-provincial companies have been given an "A" designation but prior to that date a number of different registrations were used. These registrations include: A extra provincial company B extra provincial company registration EPR extra provincial company registration LIC extra-provincial company licenced REG extra provincial registration FOR foreign registration.

The series also contains several other types of company files, each with their own designation. These are as follows: NON non registered companies PA private acts RLY railways S+L savings and loans T trusts TMY tramways. This series includes records created under earlier names of the Corporate Registry including the Companies Branch and Registrar of Companies. The series also includes company files originally created and maintained by the Colonies of Vancouver Island and British Columbia.

This series consists of waste books likely created by the colony and province of BC Treasury from 1860-1878. Waste books are rough account book in which transactions are recorded as they occur. Waste book entries are often transferred to day books prior to summary in journals and ledgers. These transactions are entered chronologically by date and are arranged under various accounts. The accounts may be the type of expense, or the name of the office in which the transaction relates to. For example, many volumes list summarized financial information for offices or districts such as the Treasury (Victoria), New Westminster, Kootenay, Cariboo, Yale, Kamloops, Lillooet, Clinton, Nanaimo and Cassiar.

Information may be entered under the following headings: date, related journal page, amount and total. Only some books include a description of individual services or items of a transaction.

Volume 2, pre-emption claim certificates, nos. 331-418 (1870-1874, 1881). Volume 3, pre-emption claims, nos. 89-128 (1862-1863) consisting of sketches pasted into ledger of cash collected for road tolls, 1862-1865. Volume 4, preemption claims, nos. 20-88 (1861-1862), no. 120 (1863) and nos. 187-200 (1865-1866), including sketches.

Includes a map of company land holdings in the Alberni valley.

These includes correspondence and plans of government reserves at Burrard Inlet and indenture of grant to British Columbia and Vancouver Island Spar Lumber and Sawmill Co., 1860-1866; these materials were filed separately as they pertained to lands comprising the Canadian Pacific Railway terminus at Coal Harbour.

The records are dated between 12 August 1861 and 14 March 1864 and were photocopied around 1977.

This series contains employment registers from the Victoria Gaol, 1861-1914. These volumes contain daily reports showing the prisoner's name, with or without labour, how/where employed and sometimes "remarks". The following Volumes are missing : 1 May 1900 - 16 Sep 1901 and 1 Feb 1903 - 14 Jun 1904. The final volume contains a notes that prisoners were transferred to Saanich Prison Farm on 12 Sep 1914.
