This series consists of records created by the Ministry of the Environment, the Department of Environment and their predecessors departments, such as the Department of Lands, Forests and Water Resources. The majority of the records were created from 1970-1977.

Records relate to department administration, organization charts, reorganization, pollution control, water resources services and the agricultural land reserve.

The records relate to all functions of the Department of Environment. This includes, but is not limited to, the creation and management of the Department of the Environment; managing protected areas; hunting; trapping and traplines; guide outfitters; fishing; Indigenous hunting and land rights; wildlife management, including wolf control; game farming; fish farms and aquaculture; water rights and management; Ministry centralization and reorganization; the establishment of the Environmental Lab; conservation and habitat management; water rights and water licences; flood prevention and mitigation; the creation and management of dams and dykes; land use; pollution, including air, chemical, solid waste and sewage; waste management, including landfills and sewage systems; coal mining; pesticides and herbicides; conservation officers, including enforcement and prosecutions; the drafting of legislation and orders-in-council; flood claims, control and prevention; and surveys and mapping.

Department of Highways films

The series comprises motion picture film materal shot by and for the Dept. of Highways, mainly in the 1950s and 1960s. There are also a few brief items from ca.1935-1940s, presumably shot for the Dept. of Public Works. Most of the material consists of unedited (or rough-edited) footage documenting highway and bridge construction and maintenance around the province, along with a few items about ferry services. The series also contains a few complete film productions, including prints of "Deas Island Tunnel", "Highway on the Sea", "Men, Mountains and the Challenge", and "Rogers Pass", some of which were produced for Highways by the Photographic Branch of the Dept. of Recreation and Conservation.

This series consists of a systematic sample of early case files including some of the earliest applications for the Old Age Assistance, Disabled Persons Allowance and Blind Persons Allowance programs; case files from the Island Youth Centre; and files representing the generalized case loads of the regions, including social allowance, pensions, boarding and nursing homes, foster homes, unmarried mothers, and all matters that were dealt with by the Welfare Field Service.

In January 1975, E.L. Northup, the Associate Deputy Minister, sent out an operational directive (No. 201974/75) to all Regional Directors, District Supervisors, Municipal Administrators, Divisional and Institutional Heads and Senior Administration, requesting that the various offices send a random sample of their files inactive since 31 December 1966, to the Provincial Archives.

The sampling instructions were to "select every 5th file from each group until the sample is complete". A certain number of files were requested from each Region, the Island Youth Centre and the Division of Aging. Although the instructions were to sample only from files inactive since 31 December 1966, some of the files received do include material up to 1972.

The fonds consists of records generated by the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development, its subordinate branches, divisions and agencies and predecessors, relating to the administration of Indian affairs in British Columbia. The fonds includes records created in the offices of the Indian Reserve Commissioner, the Indian Commissioner, and the Chief-Inspector of Indian Agencies for the Department of Indian Affairs and the Indian Affairs Branch. It also includes records of the Victoria office of the Indian Superintendent of British Columbia. Copies of records from the National Archives of Canada include microfilm copies of parts of RG 10 (central registry files and records of the Indian Reserve Commission) and photocopies of finding aids. Types of records from the office of the Indian Superintendent of British Columbia include records books, cash books, cheque books, letters of credit, statement of accounts, schedules, and requisition receipt books.

The majority of the fonds consists of records generated by the Victoria office of the Dept. of Transport. The fonds also includes copies of reports of formal investigations into shipping accidents submitted to the Dept. of Transport. The fonds includes documents filed in support of registration of ships and copies of investigation reports. Types of records include correspondence, declarations of ownership, registered court documents, bills of sale, ship registration forms, certificates of survey and inspections, and reports. Records include material from the offices of the Mercantile Marine Shipping Office of Vancouver, B.C. including ships articles, log books, statement of engineers fees from the steamboat inspector and a minute book from the ship Pollalloch (1888-1952); records from the Carmanah Point lighthouse including lightkeepers diaries, lightkeepers journals, diaries of the engineer, engine room diaries, engine room detailed reports, fog signal operating reports, fog signal operating reports, quarterly returns of stores, a notebook containing weather statistics (1891-1965); and a diary from the Fiddle Reef lighthouse (1903-1940).

Dept. of Agriculture lantern slides and negatives

The series consists of 214 photographs, mostly glass lantern slides and glass negatives, created or collected by the Dept. of Agriculture sometime between 1900 and 1915.

The lantern slides contain images of fruit trees, orchards, farms, packing boxes, greenhouses, crops and other agricultural activity. A few have descriptive labels which indicate that they were taken in Victoria, Kelowna, Nanaimo and Summerland, and some have photographers identified (D.J. Dwyer, J. Howard A. Chapman and Edgar Fleming). These photographs may have been used for a variety of purposes including public lectures and as illustrations for reports. Some of the slides have been hand coloured. These slides are from accession 198012-018.

The glass negatives from this accession consist of two files. The first file contains 13 negatives identified as being from Atkinson's mushrooms; images of mushrooms and fungi from book on same and appear to have been photographed directly from George F. Atkinson's 1901 books called "Studies of American Fungi". The second file consists of 24 negatives identified as Morris Middleton pruning lecture. Middleton was an assistant horticulturalist for the Dept. of Agriculture and gave pruning workshops and lectures.

The 27 glass negatives from accession 198410-027 show farms and farm buildings, fruit and berry growing as well as fruit packing and pruning classes in Creston, B.C. in 1914 (F.B. Turner photographer) and photos of apple growing medals presented to the Government of British Columbia in 1909.
