The series consists of records created by the Dept. of Education in 1939. It includes correspondence, inward and outward, of all branches and formed the department's Central Registry. Records include correspondence re text books, curricula, appointments, and special education programs. School inspectors' reports and files re individual rural schools also included. The series also includes eight maps and plans and one photograph of the gymnasium of Brooks School at Powell River under construction.

Dept. of Education statistics and school assessments

The series consists of records created by the Dept. of Education between 1953 and 1970. There are two files of collected statistical reports on B.C. schools, 1953-1964 and 1965-1970. The statistics gathered cover the following subjects: adult education, certification of teachers, distribution of pupils, electives, examiners, occupational classes, retention rates, school population, special classes, supervisory personnel and teacher entitlements. The reports are arranged alphabetically and were probably originally held in binders.

In addition, there is a file of compiled inspections of schools offering grade 8 senior matriculation, 1962-1964. The reports contain details of library and lab facilities and assessments of the teaching staff.

Dept. of Finance and Agriculture demonstration orchard contracts

The series consists of the office files of Alex Porteous, the administrative assistant to the Minister of Health (later the Associate Deputy Minister of Mental Health Programs) created between 1948 and 1966. His job description included public relations for the Ministry and the files relate mostly to public relations work for the B.C. Hospital Insurance Service, but also to the Mental Health Services and the Social Welfare Branch.

The files contain speeches of senior ministry officials, press releases, internal publications of several of the branches and divisions and general subject files of research material.

This series consists of press releases, articles, speeches and other public reports created from 1932-1943. The majority of the records were created by the Minister of Mines and Deputy Minister of Mines. The records relate to all aspects of the departments work and mining in BC generally. This includes: statistical reports on provincial mining production outputs, particularly coal; the history of mining in BC; the history of the Dept. of Mines; announcements and comments on the opening or closure of mines; biographical information of department executive; considerations on the future of mining in BC; and the discussion of various issues impacting the mining industry.

Dept. of the Provincial Secretary miscellaneous films and videos

The series consists of miscellaneous films (some original footage and some composite prints) and videocassettes about British Columbia. It includes films about the BC Pavilion in Osaka (1970), British Columbia House in San Francisco (ca. 1965) as well as the opening of the 1971 BC International Trade fair, a film about lumbering in British Columbia (1925) and Crown Zellerbach lumber activities (1966) and a reel from ca. 1970 about sailing activities.

The series also includes two video copies of BBC films, one about lumbering activities and one about a search and rescue operation.

The photographs and at least some of the films were formerly held by British Columbia House in San Francisco. Some of the films are composite prints; F1984:10/002 appears to be original footage.

Deputy Minister building project photograph files

Series consists of photographs created by the Ministry of Highways and Public Works and its predecessor body, the Ministry of Public Works, to document buildings and other projects from 1958 to 1978. Although the original series consisted of a set of project files which included correspondence, blueprints, programs and photographs, it was dismantled by archives staff in 1979. Programs were sent to the BC Archives library and the photographs were reaccessioned by the Visual Records branch. The photograph files contain images of official openings of government buildings, interior and exterior shots of various buildings and photographs of models and artist sketches for buildings.

Series consists of day files created by George Giles as Deputy Minister of various British Columbia ministries and departments from 1973 to 1979. The day files are arranged chronologically by year and month and contain copies of each month's outgoing correspondence from the deputy minister or minister. From 1973 to December 1975, the day files are for the Dept. of Public Works; from January 1976 to October 1977, they are for the Dept. or Ministry of Highways and Public Works; from November 1977 to December 1978 they are for the Ministry of Recreation and Conservation and from January to December 1979 they are for the Ministry of Deregulation.

The series consists of nine reels of film created by the Provincial Fisheries Dept. under the guidance of Deputy Minister George J. Alexander. The series includes the film "British Columbia Salmon from Sea to Can", as well as unedited film footage and out-takes showing aspects of the B.C. fishing industry. The series also includes an unrelated 1939 newsreel.

The series consists of the general office files of the Deputy Minister of Economic Development, Alexander (Sandy) Peel, created between 1974 and 1979.
The files are arranged in file code number order from 5127 to 5444 and are a mixture of subject and general correspondence files covering all aspects of the Deputy Minister's activities including: conferences, Federal-Provincial relations, economic policy and plans, Minister meetings and speeches on economic development and copies of Orders-in-Council resumes.

Series consists of general files created by George Giles in his capacity as an employee of the Department of Public Works and as Deputy Minister of the Department and later Ministry of Public Works. The files cover the period from 1958 to 1992 and include records relating to daily affairs of the ministry as well as files relating to major public works projects including the British Columbia building in Vancouver, the Vancouver court house and the Legislative precinct in Victoria. In addition there are files relating to the formation of the British Columbia Buildings Corporation (BCBC), files relating to the Ministries of Deregulation, Recreation and Culture and Highways and Public Works, and files relating to the Provincial Capital Commission and its work. There are also some personal files interspersed throughout the series. The records are not arranged according to any particular filing or classification system.

The series consists of the records created by the Deputy Minister of Agriculture, mostly between 1955 and 1971 with some earlier dated material found in select files. The Deputy Minister between 1955 and 1963 was William MacGillivray and from 1963-1971, it was A.H. Turner.

The files include correspondence to and from the Deputy Minister, reports and articles, memoranda, administrative records and subject files all to do with the daily operations of the office and its functions.

Responsibilities of the office included: apiary activities, cattle brands, beef and dairy cattle, fruits and vegetables, poultry, sheep, horticulture, field crops, Milk Board, soil and plant and animal disease.

Deputy Minister of Health executive records

The series consists of executive records documenting the activities of the Deputy Minister of Health’s office from 1987-1989 (mainly Deputy Minister, John Noble). These records provide evidence of the deputy minister office’s role: advising the minister and supporting the following ministry operations and programs: institutional services, community care/family health, and preventative health. They also document the ministry’s mandated/legislated relationship with health-related commissions (Medical Services, Emergency Health Services) and various associations. Deputy minister correspondence and subject files demonstrate the office’s advisory/supporting role in delivering effective health services across the province. Ministry of Health executive committee meeting materials provide evidence of the management of programs, policies, and people in the ministry. These records were created under legislation administered by the Ministry of Health such as: Ministry of Health Act (RSBC 1996, c. 301), the Hospital Act (RSBC 1996, c. 200), and Medical Service Plan Act, 1981 (RSBC 1979, c. 18).

This record series is generally arranged alphabetically by subject. Most of the subject files are either health-related topics or the names of health organizations and regional health care facilities in the province. The files also contain an internal file code. Records include incoming and outgoing correspondence between the Deputy Minister of Health, Minister of Health, and other government executive members, the public, and regional health care facilities and organizations. The series also includes memoranda and reports, briefing notes, meeting materials, and other records documenting ministerial activities. The records are covered by the Executive Records schedule (schedule 102906). Routine administrative records were destroyed.

Deputy Minister of Human Resources executive records

The series consists of the executive records of the office of the Deputy Minister of Human Resources. The records document key activities of the Deputy Minister’s office related to administering the ministry's social services and income security programs; for example, providing income assistance, disability services, supports for seniors, family and children's services, child protection services, Pharmacare, and other health and social services. The records were created and received by the Deputy Minister’s office between 1962-1979 in British Columbia. During this time period, the Deputy Minister’s office was under the Ministry of Human Resources (1976-1986), Department of Human Resources (1973-1976), Department of Rehabilitation and Social Improvement (1970-1973), and the Department of Social Welfare (1959-1970). Some of the files relate to the Provincial Rehabilitation and Employment Program (P.R.E.P.), the Social Planning and Review Council of BC (S.P.A.R.C.), G.A.I.N. (Guaranteed Available Income Need) program, as well as community health and human resources centres and other community programs and service organizations.

The records are arranged alphabetically by subject. They consist of correspondence, news clippings, memoranda, reports, meeting materials, policy documents, Treasury Board submissions, and research files. The records are covered by the Executive Records schedule (schedule 102906).

Series consists of subject files of the deputy minister of the Ministry of Consumer and Corporate Affairs. The records were created by Tex Enemark when he was deputy minister between 1976 and 1978.The records relate to laws administered by the ministry, liquor policy, ministry units including the Liquor Distribution Branch, speeches and meetings.

The files were not transferred in any specific order and an archivist arranged the files by subject. One file has the original file classification written on the file folder. Other files appear to contain documents with different file classifications that may have been removed from multiple files by the creator and placed in subject files.

The series consists of the Deputy Minister of Tourism’s general subject files created between 1976-1989 in British Columbia. The records were created and received by the Deputy Minister’s office responsible for the tourism function that underwent the following name changes: Ministry of Tourism and Provincial Secretary (1988-1989), Ministry of Tourism, Recreation, and Culture (1986-1988), Ministry of Tourism (1980-1986), Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Small Business Development (1979-1980), Ministry of Tourism and Small Business Development (1978-1979), and the Ministry of Provincial Secretary and Travel Industry (1976-1978). These subject files document the development, implementation and evaluation of the programs and services of the Ministry and inter-ministry relationships and the decision-making process within the Ministry. Some of the project files relate to Expo 86; committee and board and commission records document the involvement of the Deputy Minister. Some of the Deputy Ministers during this time period were Michael Horsey, Grayden Howard, and Mel H. Smith.

They consist of correspondence, committee records, board and commission files, project files, speeches, press releases, brochures, reports, memoranda, and policy statements. The series consists of photographs, 1973-1979, acquired by George Giles as Deputy Minister of Highways and Public Works and its predecessor body, the Department of Public Works. There are photographs taken of the legislative precinct area in 1973 as part of the precinct '73 project as well as a photographic inventory of Victoria properties in 1976 and of models of the proposed Vancouver courthouse ca. 1974. Most of the photographs are colour prints taken during the renovations of the legislative buildings in Victoria 1978-1979, known as project 0490. This project took place after Giles had left Public Works and moved on to the Ministry of Recreation and Conservation. It is not clear how he obtained the photographs, however they are clearly numbered prints made from the same numbered negatives created by the British Columbia Buildings Corporation (BCBC) and described as GR-3267.

Series consists of 17 rolls of photographic film taken by Deputy Minister George J. Alexander of the Provincial Fisheries Dept. between ca. 1934 and 1946. The photographs consist of ca. 485 black and white images of British Columbia canneries, fishing boats, fish processing, bridges and dams. The series also includes what appear to be personal photographs taken by Alexander, which are intermingled on the same film strips with fisheries photographs. The personal photographs consist of portraits of people, cityscapes, parks and gardens. Some of the fisheries photographs may have been used for a pamphlet called "The commercial-salmon fisheries of British Columbia" written by George J. Alexander and published by the Provincial Fisheries Dept. in 1938 and revised and reprinted in 1947.

This series includes miscellaneous subject files along with a large number of files relating to the Canadian Conference of Motor Transport Authorities, Canadian Good Roads Association, Royal Commission of Inquiry Into Road-User Charges. The records of the Canadian Conference Motor Transport Authorities include correspondence (1959-1970), conference particulars (1964-1969), committee files, etc. The Canadian Good Roads Association records include a pavement committee file (1958), correspondence, minutes, etc. (1966).

Deputy Minister A.J. Bowering was a commissioner on two Commissions of Inquiry into Road User Charges (1958, 1960). Records of this commission have been incorporated into his record system. The commission records in this unit include correspondence, briefs, exhibits, reports etc.

The series consists of motion picture film prints accumulated by L.J. (Lawrie) Wallace during his tenure as Deputy Provincial Secretary (1959-1977). Wallace was responsible for organizing British Columbia's celebrations in to mark the 1958, 1966, and 1971 centennials, as well as the B.C. component of the 1967 Canadian cetennial celebrations. Most of the these film document the celebrations of these various centennials and associated special events. The series includes several films produced by or for the Government of British Columbia, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, and the National Film Board of Canada, as well as individual fitles by various other production companies. Non-centennial-related titles include the travelogues "Beautiful British Columbia" (BC Government Travel Bureau, 1952), "Highway North" (Royalite Oil Company, 1957?), and "A Day of Fun in the Historical Town of Barkerville" (Werner Aellen for the Barkerville Restoration Advisory Committee, ca. 1963).
