Canadian Pacific Railway (C.P.R.) photographs

Series consists of 545 photographs of the Canadian Pacific Railway (C.P.R.), thought to be taken by Richard or Hannah Maynard. In 1880-1881, Richard Maynard was hired to document the construction of the C.P.R. but photos within this series may have been taken at later dates or by other photographers. Images depict trains ("rolling stock"); views of locations along the construction route, including rivers, bridges, and mountains; tracks and construction in progress; wrecks following accidents; snowsheds; and portraits of workers.

Item consists of a photograph of two Indigenous men, presumably taken near Harrison River. The photograph is attributed to Frederick Dally and a print version can be found in Album 4 (MS-3100.4, page 97).

The files contain original research notes compiled by BC Archives staff, contractors and independent researchers documenting the life of Richard and Hannah Maynard and their family. Includes photocopies or microfilm printouts from newspapers, books, periodical articles and archival records.

Weather Series : 2018 Wildfires - Descent to Dark

The digital photograph is created by David Ellingsen in 2020 as part of the Weather Patterns series [that includes PDP10342, PDP10343, PDP10344, PDP10345, and PDP10347]. The overall image is a composite of photographs of the sky from Victoria during the wildfires of 2018.

The image represents climate change and the environmental conditions that brought about the COVID-19 pandemic.

Diaries

The file consists of 3 volumes of diaries kept by Israel Wood Powell. One is dated 1888-1889 and provides details of Powell's time in France, which he spent at Royat-les-Bains and the surrounding area. The other diaries are undated, but document Powell's activities in British Columbia. The two undated diaries name several Indigenous individuals and make note about Indigenous trades, artifacts, ceremonies, and day-to-day affairs. The diaries cover many parts of the province, including Fort Simpson, Quatsino, Chemainus, and the Nass River.
