The bulk of these appear to be case files to settle disputes on debts owing between James Young (plaintiff) and Alex Crombie (defendant). The remainder are tax assessments related to mining and smelting operations in Van Anda, Texada Island, sent to Mark Bate acting as tax assessor.

The sheets are for criminal cases heard in the British Columbia Supreme Court at Vancouver, in the Court of Oyer and Terminer and General Gaol Delivery and are arranged by month and year. Each sheet lists cases heard that month and include the case number, name of prisoner, charge, date of conviction, date of sentence, plea, verdict and sentence. There are occasional handwritten notes attached. The sheets are certified as correct by the district registrar and signed by the presiding judge.

This series consists of a variety of records related to the Colony of Vancouver Island Treasury from 1853-1866. The majority of the records are various receipts, expenditures, estimates and financial statements of accounts. Accounts relate to a wide variety of government expenses, particularly those of the Land Office and transactions with the Hudson's Bay Company.
Other records include: a 1859 return of officers submitted to the Legislative Assembly detailing all employees of the colony, including their names, title, salary and remarks; an 1860 index of letters outwards including the date and subject; and a copy of the 1866 budget act with associated schedules.

Orders are the formal expression of the ruling of the court. Default judgments are ordered when one party has failed to file and serve a response to a claim within an allowed time period. A plaintiff can also apply for a default judgment if the defendant has withdrawn the response to a civil claim. Orders mainly deal with civil matters but also include some criminal matters, particularly for 1974-1975.

The series consists of Nanaimo Supreme Court civil orders and reasons for judgment, 1900-2002. Civil court orders are the formal expression of the rulings of the court, whereas the reasons for judgment are the explanation that the court gives at the conclusion of a hearing, explaining why an order is being made.
The civil court orders date from 1900 to 1994 and contain divorce orders interfiled throughout. The orders are generally arranged by volume and folio number. The orders were originally added to a shannon file volume in file date order and given folio numbers from 1 to 200 or 300. Each volume is indexed.
Reasons for judgment, filed between 1985 and 2002, were not intermingled, but rather were housed separately in accordion files. They are arranged by court file number within each folder.
